A person has a cleft lip if there is a gap in their lip, and they have a cleft palate when there is a hole in the top or the back of their mouth.

A cleft lip or palate is something that people are born with.

Operation smile is a charity that tries to stop people having cleft lips & cleft palates.

They provide medical operations to transform the lives of those affected and stop them being bullied.

Blue Peter’s ‘Send a Blue Peter’s ‘Send a Smile’Smile’ Blue peter has started an appeal to make

gowns for them to wear at the operation making their lips normal.

Children like you can make the gowns so the money can be spent for the operation not the gowns.

The next few pages will explain how you can make one.

Step 1Step 1

You now need a t-shirt - so get one of your parents old plain t-shirts like this:

You now cut a line at the back from the bottom to the top like this:

Make 3 holes on each side by the cut like this:

Now get some ribbon to put though the holes like this:

Now tie the ribbon together in a bow like this:

Now decorate the front of your t-shirt!
