The Modi Governmentsecured a 2.86 per cent cheaperprice for Rafale fighter jets thanwhat was negotiated by the UPAregime, the CAG said today, but

flagged that removal of 'sover-eign guarantees' only benefittedthe French manufacturer, and notIndia.

The much-awaited auditreport on the controversy-hitdeal also pointed out that certainIndia-specific enhancements inthe new deal were "notrequired" and the Ministry ofDefence overruled the IndianAir Force's proposal to reducethe number of these enhance-ments.

Soon after it was tabled inParliament, the report was lappedup by BJP to hit out at Congresswith senior leaders and ministersfrom the ruling party assertingthat the CAG has exposed "lies"

of the opposition party chief,Rahul Gandhi, on the Rafale issueand it vindicates their positionthat Prime Minister NarendraModi got the country a better dealin purchase of 36 fighter jets.

The Congress, however, rejected the CAG audit, saying itwas an "eyewash" and "not evenworth the paper it was written on"as it did not take into account the"dissent note" of deal negotiators. The party dubbed the CAG as'Chowkidar Auditor General' andwas joined by several other oppo-sition parties in questioning theaudit report.(PTI)
