OUR NATION CELEBRATES

BLACK HISTORY MONTH this FEBRUARY!

Every February, we are asked to remember

the many African-Americans in our country

who struggled for “civil rights.”

What are “civil rights?”

These are the freedoms that many of us take

for granted…

They include the freedom to go to school

where we want to…

To work at a job of our choice and interest…

To live in a house and neighborhood where

we want…

And to vote for our own leaders.

But not everyone in our country has

always been treated equally.

Sometimes, African-Americans were treated differently and unfairly.

Not everyone has enjoyed

these “civil rights.”

Our history is full of very brave people

who fought for equality.

And many used their right of FREE SPEECH found in the First Amendment to

bring about change!

Let’s take a look at some of these leaders who

fought for “civil rights”.

Sojourner Truth worked for civil rights in New York and other states in the early 1800’s.

She was a speaker all over the country demanding women’s rights to vote!

Frederick Douglas started his own newspaper. He wrote against slavery and traveled around the country giving speeches, telling people about his experiences as a slave.

He used his FIRST AMENDMENT freedoms to convince people about the evils of slavery.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a preacher and leader for African-American’s civil rights.

He used his freedom of speech and the press, asking for people to be judged by their contributions, not by the color of their skin.
