DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE NOVEMBER 2019 VOLUME 29, ISSUE 11 PLEASE VIST OUR WEB SITE: fireballchapterbca.com
IN THIS ISSUE
Director’s message, Fall tour photos, November meeting flyer, 2020 Regional registration form, Fireball renewal form, For sale
items, Fireball schedule and officers.
Congratulation to our Assistant
Director, Ed Gunyo. It was a hard
fought campaign and a close
election, but Ed is now the Director
of the Minnesota Cadillac Club.
Wish him well. He will continue to
be our Assistant Director and tour planner supreme.
2019 Heartland Regional. We have returned the
$1900 seed money to the regional treasurer. I will
closed out our bank account at the end of November
and project a profit around $1500 for the region.
Hope you have taken time to look at all the regional
photos on our web site. It is the only way I got to see
the show.
2020 Heartland Regional. The registration forms
are included in this newsletter plus a note on how to
do online hotel reservations. You will not find a
regional meeting with at a lower cost. They are
trying to make everything $20 since it is the year
2020. Great price on the hotel with breakfast.
Walt Carlson. Walt and Dee Carlson never missed
a February meeting since he proposed to her during
our 2005 Anniversary/Birthday gathering. They
missed last year. They were on their way and Walt
took a spill. Complications developed as a result of
the fall and last week Walt was rushed to St. Luke’s
hospital in Duluth for emergency surgery. They
removed one of his legs just below the knee. Please
drop him a card to let Dee and Walt know we are
thinking of them.

Earlier this year we had a meeting at Hooligans, we
were seated looking over the menu and the lights
went out. A driver took out the major power pole in
the area. Since the whole world runs on electricity
they had to close the doors and we had to cancel
our gathering. It is time again to try and do BARGO
at Hooligans.
Packing them away.
After many days of rain, the weather guessers
started talking about snow. I started the process of
putting our treasures away. Did not get to enjoy
them much this year. Spent much of the summer
planning the regional. I just got my 1956 Super
Sedan back from my grandson, who found out it
attracts girls, completed a bunch of repairs on the
1969 Electra convertible
and 1993 Roadmaster
wagon that I put off until
after the regional and
now snow is forecast just
when they are ready to
drive.
See you at BARGO

Fireball Put them Away Tour
It rained and rained and rained and rained, but
the route Ed planned thorough the countryside
was beautiful. The fall colors were starting to
appear and the fields looked ready for
harvesting.
We met at the shopping mall in Rockford MN, a
very large empty parking area that some people
had a hard time finding. The gathering included
Buick Club, Cadillac/LaSalle club and Riviera
Club members. It was a cold and wet day, yet
some members appeared in shorts. Good old
Minnesota people do not notice the changing
seasons. Our tour guide led us through the
Minnesota countryside to the first of many
planned stops. Our first stop was to an
acquaintance of Pat Prom, which of course
means John Deere equipment. The very large
building held over two hundred pedal tractor and
pedal cars, some hand made by Pat, tractor
collection and a number of bikes including rare
ones sold by John Deere. The group was treated
to a discussion about the tractor collection. One
mystery was a very large earth moving piece of
equipment in a section of the building with no
incoming or out going doors. It appeared the
building was built around the equipment and Pat
says that could have been possible.
Next stop was up the road to the farm of the son
of the tractor collection owner where we had the
opportunity to see over 200 vintage snowmobiles
and a number of collector cars.
No Ed Gunyo tour is complete without a stop at a
winery. The winery was jumping with a number of
outdoor exhibits.
It was at this point we had to leave. Mary’s great
grandchildren were arriving from Phoenix. Yet for
the tour to do were stops at a local meat market
and then off to Mom’s for good old country
cooking.
Despite the weather everyone seemed to have a
good time and it was home to pack the Buicks
away.

As we started to gather, a member of the Cadillac club appeared wearing shorts. It was raining and 40
degrees. The heater in our ‘93 Roadmaster stopped during the tour. It was cold.
Room for a lot of stuff
One of Pat Prom’s
creations, it runs.
John Deere bikes. Most were black, but a few were
painted white and gray. It took the owner many
years to find the off colored ones to complete the
collection.

From tractors we went to see a vintage
collection of snowmobiles and cars.
Then it was off
to wine and
food.

Passing of Hellen Marshall A stable of Buick meetings was finding Lyle and Hellen Marshall at the gathering. They drove everywhere in their 1941 Phaeton. It must have had over 300000 miles on the odometer. Lyle was a BCA board member and founder of the Hawkeye chapter in Iowa plus being a world expert in 1941 Buicks. He passed away many years ago and his wife Hellen recently died. There are a world of stories about them. Here is one. So many wonderful memories of our Buick club shows and outings and most involved Lyle and Hellen Marshall. One Sunday, we ended up going with them to see their daughter in Nebraska City, NE and while there, Lyle found an ad for a ‘55 Buick, which Lyle and Gary went to see and Lyle purchased. On the way home, Hellen and I followed as Lyle and Gary drove the ‘55 Buick, when out of the dark we saw a large deer that leaped like it would jump over the ‘55. A sudden cloud of dust momentarily blocked our view and we were sure that the deer had hit them and damaged the ‘55. Hellen stewed about how much damage there was. When we finally stopped in the next town, we were relieved to see that the deer hoof had hit the back fender and knocked the dirt and dust out of it, but hadn't damaged it at all. We had a good laugh at how well the Buick had been built. Ginny and Gary Walker
One of Linda Paul’s friends had the opportunity to
be in Havana. She asked him to send her photos of
any Buicks he saw. Here is a great shot of a 1954
and 1955.
Update on the car collection at Lake Mills Iowa. The Hawkeye chapter recently did a visit and as you
can see, the collection of Buicks has grown plus tractors. We are discussing a spring trip there.

How I got interested in Buicks by Norman Veness #1069 In 1941 a friend of my dad's from South St. Paul said he was trading in his 1939 model 41 and buying a new 1941 Buick ! He said he traded every 2 years, and stored them in the winter and flew to AZ. Well my dad was interested in replacing his 1936 Chev, and the next thing we were going North on Concord St. for a test drive. I remember this guy taking a sharp left turn and going up a very steep hill and left the Buick in high gear, increasing speed all the way to show the ‘39's powerful motor ! In the 1940's when we went to the state fair, the first thing we did was head to the Buick display on machinery hill, to get our free little yellow Buick flag. Well the ‘39 made it through my older brother's dating years, although he did burn the rod bearings out, this was right before my dad was headed up to the North Shore to go deer hunting ! My dad took the ‘39 down to Win Stevens Buick and him and a mechanic worked on the car all night installing a new crate motor. About this time I got my license and this is the car Marian and I first dated in. I was a good driver in those days and I treated the ‘39 with respect, I do remember the heater didn't give out much heat at -20 degrees !! My dad kept this car until he went down to Swanberg & Shaffe & traded for a new 1950 model 52, my sister also bought a new 1950 model 51. He didn't think I needed my own car yet so when he got home to show my mother her new car, I walked out the door ready to go on a date - this car was Broke - in FAST!! No dynaflow here ! Both these new ‘50s had straight stick transmissions. Long story short - these memories kicked in years later when on my way to work one morning I spotted a 1939 Buick convertible coupe along side the road with a For Sale sign $60.00. That's another story for another time - that is still on going !!!!!!!! This is the 1939 That Norman made reference to. He has owned the car for 60 plus years.
As you can see it attracted the eye of a very talented local artist. Norm, It was so nice to meet you a couple weeks ago at the Victoria Classic Car evening. I thought you might like to see an image of the finished painting. And here is one that my husband took that evening when I was working on it. I plan to be at the Cars and Caves event at the Chanhassen Autoplex tomorrow morning for their last “All classics, collector, exotics, muscle, antique, street rod and motorcycle” event. Is that something you attend? I plan to bring all four of the Classic Car paintings I did in Victoria. I have been invited to set up at Steve’s garage and paint.

1926 Buick for sale. I received a call from this lady in the Kansas City area. Her father passed away and the family is trying to sell his 1926 Buick. This is a beautiful project car for someone. Please find some photos of the car attached. If you are interested or know someone who may be, please contact Debbie Dollar for more information at ddollar4646@icloud.com. Her phone number is 816-914-9547. I have a friend who owns a warehouse where a previous tenant left behind a crated straight 8 Buick engine and transmission. Not sure about the history on the engine but best guess is that it was removed from the car to make either a rat rod or a street rod. No idea the condition of the engine. Engine Serial Number is 4-3818208, which (from the Team Buick database) is from a 1940 Model 40 (Special). It does also include the stick shift transmission. A couple hundred bucks will put it on the dock ready for your pickup. If you are interested, or know someone who would have a interest, contact: Sam Meller (314)374-3750 cityrenovators@hotmail.com

Next-generation manufacturing takes on a 50-year-old
icon as ORNL researchers transform the classic Shelby
Cobra sports car into a 3D-printed laboratory on wheels.
Additive manufacturing enables the seamless integra
tion of advanced technologies with design flexibility and
modularity, while providing a platform for rapid de
velopment and evaluation. The printed car incorporates
"plug-and-play" components such as new engine,
battery, and fuel cell technologies; hybrid system
designs; a power electronics and wireless charging
systems, allowing researchers to easily and quickly test
out innovative ideas in a driving laboratory.
Researchers printed the Shelby Cobra at DOE's
Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at ORNL using
the Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) machine,
which can manufacture strong, lightweight composite
parts without the need for tooling. The new BAAM
system, which was jointly developed by ORNL and
Cincinnati Incorporated, is 500 to 1,000 times faster
and capable of printing polymer components ten times
larger than today's industrial additive machines - in
sizes greater than one cubic meter.
ORNL researchers are developing technologies that
accelerate the deployment of new vehicles and efficient
transportation systems powered by domestic,
renewable, clean energy. Building on core science
capabilities, researchers are exploring the unique
advantages of additive manufacturing to create new
vehicle technologies with higher efficiency and reduced
cost.
