• Palestinians: The Catastrophe – more than 700,000 Arabs were driven from their homes.

• Israelis: Arafat (PLO leader) chooses violence over peacemaking.

• Palestinians: After 20 years of Jewish settlement construction, West Bank and Gaza Strip Arabs begin 1st intifada (uprising against Israeli occupation)

• Isrealis: We accepted peace negotiated in Oslo, Norway (exchange of land for promise of peace)

• Palestinians: The Arabs get some self-rule, but no progress on Jerusalem, the 1948 refugees, or a Palestinian state

• Isrealis: Offered a generous settlement, Arabs choose violence instead. The 2nd intifada begins.

• Palestinians: Israel tried to force a peace agreement and refused to give up Jewish settlements

2005

• Jewish settlements removed from Gaza Strip and it is turned over to Palestinians

• Palestinians elect Hamas to run their government. It has promised to never negotiate land with the Israelis and will try to destroy Israel.
