Parempi maailma Pariisin jälkeen –Ilmastonmuutos mahdollisuutena
Alue-ennakoijien Seminaari Kolmitasoisesti ennakoiva Suomi 11.3.2016, Tampere Jaana Pelkonen, johtava asiantuntija, Sitra
Perceived well-being
Economic growth
Consumption of natural resources; Climate emissions (1.5˚C)
Preventive
health care
Circular economy
The biggest systemic challenge of our time is to achieve well-being whilst decoupling economic growth from the consumption of natural resources
Digitalization is a key enabler for seizing the opportunities!

Paris Agreement in COP21 was a breakthrough
• Binding agreement
• Tighter target set at 1,5 degree global warming
• Emission reduction targets are based on country bledges
• Encouraged many countries to commit to strong climate actions
• Success for multilateral negotiation process
• Over 2000 companies, 400 investors and 2 200 cities committed to climate targets in Paris
4 Sitra • Jaana Pelkonen • 11.3.2016 •
Step change in work against global warming and climate change was achieved
• Growing demand for cleaner and carbon neutral solutions
• Especially solutions for energy efficiency, carbon free transport and to stop deforestration are needed
• Market for clean solutions grow from current 400 billion to over 6 trillion by year 2030
• Investments in carbon free energy has to quadrable and stay on that level until 2040
• Private investments play a crucial role
• High level talks has to be transferred to money flows
• Investors move away from carbon intensive sectors and companies
• Market structures will evolve and the value of current assets will dilute
5 Sitra • Jaana Pelkonen • 11.3.2016 •
What does this mean?
• Global warming can be stopped, but the agreement does not guarantee it
• Paris is the beginning, not the end
• If we fail, we may face serious security problems
• There is a gap between country pledges and global target
• Target level for climate financing is not binding
• Financing mechanisms still unclear
• Details of execution transferred to working groups
• Climate change affects also other natural resources like water and food
• Urgency of emission reduction measures, in order to avoid expensive and risky corrective measures in the future
6 Sitra • Jaana Pelkonen • 11.3.2016 •

Meaning for Finland
• International co-operation to take our position in the international arena
• More even global playing field for cleaner solutions
• Growing market and more export opportunities for cleantech
• Less carbon leakage
• Greatest possibilities on smart cities, smart mobility, smart grids, smart factories, bio-fuels and biomaterials

What do Finnish companies think about carbon neutrality today?
75% consider carbon neutrality as an important
source of strategic competitive advantage either now or in the future (Taloustutkimus, 2015).
