By the 1840s a dispute arose as to the location and correctness of the original survey which had been performed by Lt. Col. Cochran in 1796. The Counties of Warren and Essex petitioned State Surveyor General Nathaniel Jones to settle the matter. On July 19, 1844, Jones issued a commission to Deputy State Surveyor Joseph L. Harris to re-survey the line. Harris completed his work on September 24, 1844.

By order of the Surveyor General dated January 29, 1845, Harris’s line was decreed as the official boundary line between the counties of Warren and Essex.

Harris sketch of the Yellow (aka Norway) pine tree marking the NWC of Washington County on the East side of Lake George. Arnold while working for Colvin in 1878 removed a block from this tree and counted 80± annual rings of growth dating the markings to 1798 (1796). This probably hastened the demise of the tree which was gone in 1935 when Watts performed a limited survey.
