Honourable Mentions

The Toronto Workforce Innovation Group, a non-profit organization that brings together business, labour, academic and community leaders has teamed up with the Diversity Institute at Ryerson University to try to “get employers thinking about how to make room for new talent. It’s time to negotiate intergenerational compromises and move away from the rigid workplace structure of the industrial era. ( Toronto Start, October 2011)

The Toronto Workforce Innovation Group coined the phrase “hourglass economy” to describe this city’s labour force… well-paid workers on top, a swelling mass of low-wage service workers at the bottom, with little in between. (Toronto Star, December, 2011)

“ the knowledge sector “ typically comprised of positions for which a post-secondary education is needed, was as of 2010, the only segment of Toronto’s workforce to actually add jobs. “In the same way we talk about real estate right now as being a seller’s market. Employers can ask for qualifications for a job that job may not require” (National Post, July 2012)

A report from Toronto Workforce Innovation Group showed how the city’s economic transformation has outpace its labour market, leaving a polarized workforce with a hollowed-out middle. (Toronto Star, May 2011)
