PAUL NORMANSELL
Paul Normansell’s art has received global acclaim
from critics and collectors in the fashion and music
industries, being hailed as some of the most style-
conscious imagery to define the shifting trends of
popular culture.
First producing abstract pieces from patterns of
dots and circles, the natural progression of his
style led Paul to incorporate images within them.
He moved from creating subtle shapes and hidden
images within patterns to full portraits made up of
fragments of colour, similar in execution to large
scale pointillist paintings made up of individually
painted dots.
Paul wanted to use his unique approach to recreate
famous faces known for their intrinsic beauty. His
aim was to achieve statement pieces with an almost
synthetic, polished feel, placing each face in the
artistic equivalent of a media spotlight. To do this he
moved away from the natural organic look of acrylic
and canvas to high gloss enamel paint on sheet
aluminium. This created a flawless reflective quality
as if the figures were literally in a glossy magazine.
The combination of paint and background
heightened the dynamic visual aspect of his work
through the optical effect and overwhelming impact.
As one looks at a painting directly, depending on how
the light falls, the variety and definition of colour
and tone is lost and the portrait almost becomes
a silhouette. It is only when viewed off-centre that
the image comes alive and the portrait materialises
before our eyes.

‘Forever 27’ is a visual celebration of
four pioneering rock legends, featuring
Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix
and Jim Morrison, all of whose lives were
cut tragically short at the height of their
extraordinary careers.
Their untimely deaths at the age of 27 links
them not only to each other, but also to other
iconic musicians including Janis Joplin,
Robert Johnson and Brian Jones, and their
names have come to represent the rock and
roll lifestyle at its most extreme.
This exclusive fine art collection is being
released in the United Kingdom and the
United States simultaneously.
I have been asked many times to
complete this collection of works
because of my strong links to art, music and
fashion. When Amy passed, I felt compelled to
finally etch them all in my own personal history.
It is a tragic situation that has left many fans of
music over the years with empty hearts.
I thought about doing them in black and white,
as I have done many pieces like this for style
effect or to depict loss. I decided against that
with Forever 27, as I wanted to celebrate their
lives, recreate them in ultra vivid colours that
remind us just how brilliant they were and how
much larger than life. While they
were here they changed the world.
