organiskie, gan neorganiskie luminofori [12-14]. Organisko savienojumu izmantošana
atver plašas iespējas jaunu optisko materiālu radīšanā, sakarā ar to ārkārtīgi lielu
daudzveidību un iespējām pārveidojot ķīmisko struktūru, mainīt fizikālās īpašības.
Organiskie luminofori ir sarežģītas uzbūves organiskie savienojumi: aromātiskie
ogļūdeņraži un to atvasinājumi, heterocikliskie savienojumi, metāla atomu kompleksie
7
savienojumi ar organiskajiem ligandiem un citi. Daži no tiem spējīgi luminiscēt
šķīdumos, citi – kondensētā veidā.
No organiskiem savienojumiem luminiscē galvenokārt vielas ar konjugētām
dubultsaitēm, to skaitā lielākā daļa no aromātiskiem un poliaromātiskiem
savienojumiem. Viena no aromātisko savienojumu grupām ir antrona grupas
krāsvielas, pie kurām pieder benzantrona atvasinājumi, šī darba pētījumu objekti,
daudzām no kurām piemīt izteikta fluorescence plašajā spektrālajā diapazonā.
Organisko savienojumu ķīmiskās struktūras ietekme uz luminiscences raksturojumiem
tagad ir plaši pētīta problēma. No jau noskaidrotiem faktiem var atzīmēt to zināmo
aprēķiniem, kuri dod svarīgu informāciju par iespējamām elektronu pārejām, to
raksturlielumiem.
Pētījumu metodika
Veicot šo darbu, tika pielietotas sekojošas metodes:
Stacionāra fluorescentā spektroskopija;
Laikā sadalīta fluorescentā spektroskopija;
UV-VIS spektroskopija;
Konfokālā lāzerskenējošā spektroskopija;
Skenējošā elektronu mikroskopija;
Atomspēku mikroskopija;
Rentgenstaru difraktometrija;
Elementanalīze.
Aizstāvamās tēzes:
1. Pētāmo organisko luminoforu optiskās īpašības ir atkarīgas no to struktūras:
izteiktāka pozitīva solvatohromija un polaritātes jutīgums novērojas
savienojumiem, saturošiem stiprākas elektronu donoru amidīnu grupas.
4. Jaunizstrādātie polimērmateriāli un kompozītmateriāli izrāda praktiski svarīgas
luminiscentas īpašības, kuras var modulēt ar šo materiālu sastāvu, iegūšanas
metodēm vai tālāku apstrādi: mainot benzantrona luminofora saturu kopolimēros
var regulēt luminiscences krāsu no sarkanas līdz baltai;
9
5. Arsēna trisulfīda saturošu kompozītmateriālu apstarošana ar lāzeru izsauc arsēna
trisulfīda agregāciju un kompozītmateriāla luminiscences intensitātes
palielināšanu.
Novitāte
1. Noteikti jauno organisko luminoforu absorbcijas, luminiscences un ierosmes
spektru raksturlielumi dažādās vidēs.
luminoforu molekulu elektronu līmeņu sadalījumi, elektronu pārejas, to enerģijas
un varbūtības, dipolmomentu lielumi.
5. Iegūtas luminoforu plānas kārtiņas un izpētītas to optiskās īpašības, virsmas
reljefs un sakārtojums.
6. Izpētītas jaunu luminiscējošu kopolimēru optiskās īpašības. Atrasts, ka
kopolimēru luminiscences spektrālo raksturojumu var regulēt ar to sastāvu.
7. Izpētītas kompozītmateriāla luminofors/As2S3/polimērs optiskās īpašības pirms
un pēc lāzera starojuma apstrādes, parādīta iespēja modulēt to luminiscences
parametrus.

DARBA ATSEVIŠĶU NODAĻU ĪSS IZKLĀSTS
1. MATERIĀLI UN METODES
1.1. Organisku luminoforu ķīmiskā struktūra, to kristālisko un plānslāņa
Luminofori ar tādu D-A struktūru piesaista

Kristālu iegūšanu veica no piesātinātiem
to maina optiskās īpašības [23,24].

1.2. Luminiscējošo polimērmateriālu un to plānslāņa paraugu iegūšana
Viens no moderniem tehnoloģiskiem virzieniem ir dažādu elektroluminiscējošu
ierīču konstruēšana, kur izmanto gan mazmolekulārus luminoforus, gan
lielmolekulārus polimērmateriālus, kuriem salīdzinājumā ar mazmolekulāriem
savienojumiem piemīt virkne priekšrocību – lielāka stabilitāte, intensīvāka
luminiscence, lētāka iegūšana u.c. [12].
Ko-
polimēru iegūšanas metodi realizēja, radikāli
polimerizējot cietfāzē kopā N-vinilkarbazolu
un 3-N-alilaminobenzantronu dažādās
attiecībās (no 0,1 līdz 8% otra komponenta

luminiscence.
Sakarā ar to, ka termiskā sublimēšana neder plānslāņu iegūšanai no
lielmolekulāriem savienojumiem, darbā iegūto kopolimēru plānu organisko kārtiņu
pagatavošanā tika izmantota rotējošā diska uznešanas metode (angļu val. - spin-
coating).

1.3. Luminiscējošo kompozītmateriālu un to plānslāņa paraugu izstrāde
Arvien pieaugošu praktisku interesi rada virsmas nanostruktūru izveides iespēja ar
lāzera starojumu iedarbību uz gaismas jutīgiem materiāliem. Daudzi darbi ir veltīti
šāda procesa izpētei vairākos organiskos un neorganiskos materiālos. Lielu interesi
forma šķīdumu, rezultātā paraugos bija no 0,0009 % līdz 0,1% luminofora masa

2. Luminiscējošo materiālu izpētes rezultāti
2.1. Optisko īpašību atkarība no molekulu struktūras
Ir zināms, ka 3-aizvietotos benzantrona atvasinājumos novērojas sekojošais
enerģētisko līmeņu izvietojums [39]: Tππ*<Sππ
*<Tnπ
*<Snπ
*
17

19
Kā zināms, sastāvošas no
donora-akceptora molekulām ciet-
vielu sistēmas (piemēram, plānas
kārtiņas) raksturojas ar stipru
iekšmolekulāru, bet ar vāju starp
molekulāru mijiedarbību. Tādēļ
tādu cietvielu sistēmu optiskās un
elektriskās īpašības lielakai daļai
nosaka individuālu molekulu
īpatnības [41].

Pētot amīnu 3-7 un amidīnu 14-21 cietvielu luminiscenci, noteikts, ka to
novietojuma atšķirības amidīniem neietekmē to luminiscences intensitāti. Veicot
20
Aprēķini rāda dipolmomenta vektora no karbonilgrupas

Līdz ar to darbā bija vērts
izpētīt benzantrona 3-amidinoatvasinajumu ar broma atomu 2-vietā – savienojumus
22-25. Atrasts, ka visi aplūkotie 2-brom-3-amidinoatvasinājumi izrāda luminiscentas
īpašības šķīdumos, bet neluminiscē cietvielā. Tātad broma atoma ievadīšana
benzantrona sistēmā izraisa fluorescences dzēšanu, bet neizsauc fosforescences
parādīšanos.

10. att.

fragmentiem [52] un izpētītas to īpašības.
elektronus (gar vinilkarbazola atlikumiem) gan caurumus (gar benzantrona aromātisku
sistēmu). Lai raksturotu izstrādāto polimērmateriālu spektrālās īpašības iegūtiem
paraugiem bija uzņemti luminiscences spektri.
24
Iegūtie spektroskopiskie dati liecina par izstrādāto
polimērmateriālu luminiscences parametru atkarību no
3-N-alilaminobenzantrona atlikumu daudzuma
sintezētajā polimērmateriālā: jo mazāka 3-N-alilamino-
benzantrona koncentrācija, jo platāka emisijas josla un
tuvāka izstarotā gaisma baltajai krāsai, ko var izskaidrot
ar polivinilkarbazola un kopolimēra luminiscences
spektru pārklāšānos.
Pieaugot sintezētajā polimērā aminobenzantrona
atlikumu saturam, novērojama parauga luminiscences
maksimuma nobīde sarkanajā spektra pusē: no 595 nm
atkarībā no pielietošanas vajadzībām.

var būt spilgti luminiscējoši.
citos gadījumos otrādi – ciešie starpmolekulārie kontakti veicina luminiscenci [20,58];
mijiedarboties - acīmredzot tāds iepakojums veicina eksimēru veidošanos un to
luminiscenci [59]. Vāji luminiscējošo amino atvasinājumu 1, 2 un 5 molekulas
iepakotas kristālos paralēlās plaknēs.

No amidino atvasinājumiem (sk. 15. attēlu) intensīva luminiscence piemīt pārsvarā
No četriem

Amidīnu-hroma kompeksu SEM izpēte parādija, ka šo kompeksu pulveri sastāv no

termiskās uzputināšanas apstākļos tie viedo plānas kartiņas no atbilstošiem amidīniem.

PROMOCIJAS DARBA REZULTĀTI UN SECINĀJUMI
1. Izpētīti jauni luminiscējoši organiskie savienojumi, iegūti to absorbcijas,
izpētītas to optiskas īpašības, virsmas reljefs un sakārtojums.
5. Izstrādātas iegūšanas metodes jauniem luminiscējošiem kopolimēriem, izpētītas
to optiskās īpašības. Atrasts, ka mainot kopolimēru sastāvu, mainās
luminiscences spektrālais raksturojums, ko var praktiski izmantot OLED
struktūru veidošanā.
6. Izpētītas kompozītmateriāla luminofors/As2S3/polimērs optiskās īpašības pirms
un pēc lāzera starojuma apstrādes. Atrastas luminofora luminiscences intensitātes
izmaiņas kompozītmateriālos sakarā ar fotoinducētiem procesiem arsēna sulfīdā.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK
Topicality of the subject
Rapid progress in solid-state electronics and ever-growing requirements to the
parameters of modern electro optical and integrated optical equipment calls for the
necessity to search for new functional materials. Due to the rapid development of
luminescence using technology, it appears important to develop and implement new
materials with particular luminescent properties in the condensed state. In spite of the
significant progress achieved recently [1-5], there is still great potential as far as the
development of luminescent and electro luminescent molecular materials. Besides, it
is crucial for a better understanding how solid-state structural, electronic and optical
properties correlate, what is the actual fundamental spectroscopic problem of solid-
state because one of the basic tasks of spectroscopy is to elucidate regularity, if any,
between chemical structure of a particular substance and its optical characteristics.
This is necessary for the development of scientific bases for targeted synthesis of
compounds, which are important in practical fields where materials with certain
spectral characteristics - optical converters, functional elements of various opto-
electronics, information recorders are used. Successful completion of this task requires
a good understanding of how the chemical and crystalline structure affects the
distribution of electrons and the placement of energetic levels in the molecules being
studied. It has now been proven that molecular geometry has a significant influence on
the photophysical properties of solids [6-8], and therefore there is an increasing
fundamental and practical interest in clarifying the role of intermolecular interactions
in the course of electron transitions and radiative processes. An actual problem is to
increase the luminance intensity and photo stability of optical materials.
The mechanism of luminescence was understood only in the 20th century with the
appearance of the conception of the corpuscular nature of light and fundamentals of
the quantum theory were worked out. The works of P. Pringsheim (1881-1963), S.
Vavilov (1891-1951) and V. Levshin [9-11] made an outstanding contribution to the
creation and development of the luminescence theory. Nevertheless, in spite of
intensive research, the relationships between the chemical structure and luminescence
still present a challenge for science.
Nowadays, quite a range of compounds is known that can luminesce [12-14].
These are both organic and non-organic phosphors. Use of organic luminescent
substances opens up abundant opportunities for creating new optical materials; and
due to their exceedingly great diversity, it became possible to transform physical
properties by changing their chemical structure. Organic phosphors are organic
35
substances of a complex structure: aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives,
heterocyclic compounds, metal complex compounds with organic ligands, etc. Several
of those easily emit in solutions, some in the condensed state.
Among organic compounds, mainly substances with conjugated double chemical
bond luminesce, for example, most aromatic and polyaromatic compounds. One group
of aromatic compounds is represented by dyes of antron group; derivatives of
7H-benzo[de]anthracen-7-one, which make the objects of the present study, belong to
those. Many of the above-mentioned derivatives possess pronounced fluorescence of a
wide spectral range. Dependence of fluorescent characteristics on the chemical
structure of organic compounds is being widely researched currently. Among the
already ascertained facts, one can mention the well-known phenomenon whereby a
“hard” molecular structure (when oscillations of many bonds are restricted)
contributes to the luminescence. Therefore, luminescence of organic compounds can
increase with the fall of temperature, in the result of embedding molecules in the rigid
environment, or absorbing on solid particles [11,15].
A significant role in making out the photophysical process also belongs to quantum
chemical calculations that give important information about possible transitions of
electrons, their energy and probability, as well as allows for purposeful creation of
materials with required optical properties [16]. Understanding genesis of the excited
state and interaction processes and keeping them under control on the molecular level
makes it possible to modify and improve macroscopic luminescent properties, such as
intensity and colour.
It is possible to conclude, based on the above-mentioned facts, that optical and
crystallographic study of organic phosphors is topical. Therefore, spectral study of
new solid-state organic luminescent materials is needed as well as exploration of
interaction among structural peculiarities in order to obtain new and more efficient
materials for implementing those in optoelectronics.
The aim and tasks of the work
The aim of the thesis is to investigate optical properties of original organic
luminescent compounds and materials containing these substances and to determine
the correlation of spectral parameters with structural characteristics of the investigated
material.
In order to achieve these aims, the following research objectives were identified:
1. To develop methods for preparation of emissive materials.
36
2. To analyze optical properties of obtained samples in various surrounding media
(thin films, monocrystals, polymeric and in various solvent).
3. To explore structural features (orderliness, crystalline packs, surface relief, etc.)
for investigated materials.
4. To perform quantum chemical calculations for the optimization of molecular
geometry, determination of charge dispersion and electron energy levels, in order
to find out the nature of photophysical processes in studied compounds.
5. To analyze the regularities between the structural properties of the studied
materials and the spectral characteristics.
The methodology of investigation
The methods that were used in the course of this work are as follows:
Steady-State Fluorescence Spectroscopy;
Time-resolved Fluorescence Spectroscopy
UV-VIS Spectroscopy;
Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy;
Scanning Electron Microscopy;
Atomic Force Microscopy;
X-ray Diffractometry;
Elemental analysis.
The theses to be defended:
1. The optical properties of the investigated organic luminophores depend on their
structure: pronounced positive solvatohromism and polarity sensitivity are
observed for compounds containing stronger electron donor amidine groups.
2. The solid-state luminescence of investigated organic luminophores is closely
related to their crystalline packaging: compounds of monocrystal that are packaged
in a so-called "pine" type, when part of the molecule is packed perpendicularly or
almost perpendicular to each other, is shown to be significant emissions. In
addition, strong π-π-bonds between adjacent molecules in the crystal contribute to
the luminescence of solids. The injection of heavy bromine into the molecule
promotes nonradiative processes due to crystalline thickening of the packaging and
changes in the electron distribution, resulting in the luminescence quenching.
3. The lifetime of the excited state of the studied compounds depends on the
chemical structure and surrounding media: for substances with more basic groups
it is smaller, but larger for more polar solvents.
37
4. Newly-developed polymeric materials and composites exhibit important for
practical application luminescent properties that can be modulated with the
composition of these materials, preparation methods or further processing: by
changing the content of benzanthrone luminophore in copolymers can regulate the
fluorescence color from red to white;
5. Irradiation of arsenic trisulphide containing composite materials by laser causes
arsenic trisulphide aggregation and increase the luminescence intensity of a
composite material.
Scientific novelty
1. It was established the parameters of absorption, luminescence and excitation
spectra of novel organic luminophores in various surrounding media.
2. It was evaluated how structure of benzanthrone luminophore and polarity of
medium influence characteristics of emission.
3. By quantum chemical calculations, the distributions of electron levels of
molecules, energy and probability of electron transitions, dipole moments of
investigated luminophores have been evaluated and compared.
4. Monocrystals of some studied compounds were prepared. It was shown solid
state luminescence correlation with crystallographic data; it was found
relationships between the chemical structure of investigated substances, crystal
packaging and the intensity of emission.
5. It was established optical properties, surface relief and orderliness of obtained
thin films of luminophores.
6. Optical properties of new luminescent copolymers were investigated. It has been
found that the spectral characteristics of copolymer luminescence can be
controlled by their composition.
7. The optical properties of a composite luminophore/As2S3/polymer before and
after laser radiation were studied. It was shown the possibility of modulation of
their luminescence parameters.

substances and the environmental polarity. By quantum chemical calculations, the
electron level distributions, electron transitions, their energy and probability, dipole
moments of molecules of investigated luminophores, have been evaluated and

DESCRIPTION OF THE CHAPTERS OF THE THESIS
1. MATERIALS UN METHODS
1.1. Chemical structure of organic luminophores, their crystalline and
thin-layer samples preparation
In present work original conjugated polyaromatic organic luminophores,
synthesized at Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of DU were used as
research objects. These compounds relate to the group of anthrone dyes, namely,
several derivatives of benzo[a]anthracene-7-one, the chemical structure of which is
39
depicted in Fig. 1. These molecules consist of electron acceptor carbonyl group and
electron donor N-containing group (with substituted amino groups 1-9 and substituted
amidino group compounds 10-25) which are connected by -conjugated aromatic
core, through which an intramolecular charge transfer takes place during
photoexcitation.
Luminophores with such a D-A structure attract great scientific and practical
interest because they can serve as photoactive materials in molecular electronics
[17,18]. In addition, compounds with bromine atoms in the 2-position of the
benzanthrone system (compounds 22-25) have been investigated. The presence of
bromine results in a so-called "severe atomic effect", which greatly affects
intermolecular interaction and electron density distribution [19,20], due to which it
was worth exploring this effect on the photophysical properties of benzanthrone
luminophores.

Fig. 1. Chemical structures of studied dyes.
Various types of samples of studied compounds - monocrystals, thin films,
solutions in several organic solvents were prepared for the experiments. Metal
complexes of some amidines have been prepared and studied. It has been found that
several amidines form poorly soluble and amorphous complexes with chromium,
cobalt, nickel, and iron ions. Elemental analysis was carried out to determine the
composition of these complexes, as result it was found that the chromium ion is
complexed with three molecules of amidine.
In order to study the crystalline structure of benzanthrone luminophores in relation
to their optical properties, attempts were made to grow appropriate monocrystals.
During the research, it was found that monocrystals of studied compounds grow from
benzene solutions, while from other organic solvents (acetone, ethanol, chloroform,
toluene, etc.) only amorphous precipitates were formed. Crystals were obtained from
saturated benzene solutions at room temperature for 3-7 days. Most of obtained
monocrystals belong to monoclinic or orthorhombic crystal family [21-24]. Some
compounds (10, 13, 20, 24) crystallize as solvates, where benzene molecules are
40
included into the crystalline grating of these solvates, which after the evaporation of
solvent pass into an amorphous form and thus the optical properties are changed
[23,24].
During the process of growing crystals, it was found that some mono-substituted
amidines (15, 21), despite the non-polarity of these derivatives, bind crystalline water
molecules with forming of stable hydrates that do not collapse after crystallisation
from a nonpolar solvent, indicating a sufficiently strong bond between water and
luminophore molecules.
Thin film samples were prepared for the experiments using a thermal sublimation
technique. Thermal sublimation in a vacuum is based on the heating of inorganic or
organic substances in a vacuum at a temperature at which the substance passes into a
gaseous state (evaporates or sublimates), from which it rapidly cools down to solid, or
desublimates. Vacuum sublimation equipment ВУП-5 with optical unit was used for
preparation of thin films of organic luminophores. Thickness of the film and reflection
coefficient was determined by this optical unit.

1.2. Luminescent polymeric materials and their thin film sampling
One of the modern technological directions is the construction of various
electroluminescent devices, which use both low molecular weight luminophores and
high molecular weight polymeric materials, which in comparison with low molecular
compounds, have a number of advantages - greater stability, more intense
luminescence, lower cost synthesis, etc. [12]. In the solid state, the polymers form an
amorphous structure in comparison with the low molecular weight compounds, many
of them have a crystalline structure. In the case of a conjugate polymer chain, the
charge transfer through the circuit is better than from one molecule to another, hence
they have better electrooptic properties.
41
Particular interest is the use of materials that have red fluorescence, as the number
of such compounds is limited in comparison to blue, green and yellow emitting
luminophores. There is also a high demand for fluorescent white-colored composites
and polymer materials. Polyvinylcarbazole polymers are known and widely used
nowadays. The structure of these polymers corresponds to the formula:
N
**
n
Polyvinylcarbazoles have good electro-
conductivity in comparison with many other
polymeric materials and intense green electro-
luminescence.
It is known that materials with modified mechanical and optical properties can be
obtained by copolymerization of N-vinylcarbazole with organic luminophores
containing the polymerizable fragment. Copolymers with naphthalic acid, fluorene,
styrene, thiophene, triphenylmethane, phenalene derivatives are described in the
literature [25-28].
Due to the high photostability of the anthrone dyes
and the brightness of their luminescence, 3-N-allyl-
aminobenzathrone (anthrone derivative with polymer-
isable allyl group) was used as a raw material for new
copolymers. The copolymer preparation method was
realized by radical polymerization of Nvinylcarbazole
and 3-N-allylaminobenzanthrone in various ratios (from
0.1 to 8% by weight of the second component) in
combination with 4,4'-azobis(4-cyanovaleric acid) at a
temperature from 70° C to 80° C.

Polymerization of 3 N-allylaminobenzanthrone with methyl acrylate and methyl
methacrylate was studied. As result polymeric materials with a greenish-yellow
luminescence were obtained.
Due to the fact that thermal sublimation is not suitable for preparation of thin films
from macromolecular compounds, spin-coating method was used for preparation of
thin films of synthesized copolymer. Spin-coating method is simpler and less harmful
to organic compounds, therefore it is more promising and cheaper. Solutions in
toluene (1ml) of studied copolymers (5-7 mg) were prepared for thin films obtaining.

1.3. Luminescent composite materials and their thin film sampling
A great practical interest in the possibility of creating surface nanostructures is the
use of laser radiation on light sensitive materials. Many works are devoted to the study
of these processes in several organic and inorganic materials.
The application of inorganic chalcogenides/polymer composite materials in optical
recording is of great interest. There are a number of works on optical properties and
optical recording of these materials have been studied [29, 30].
Powdered arsenic trisulphide As2S3 was dissolved in an organic solvent mixture
(ratio of dimethylformamide to diethylamine in the range 9†1). The resulting 10%
arsenic trisulfide solution was mixed with 30% polymer Disperbyk-161 solution in a
2:1 ratio. To the obtained solution was added 1% solution of 3-piperidinobenzanthrone
(compound 6) in chloroform, as result the samples with the content of the luminophore
6 of 0,0009% to 0.1% by weight were obtained. As a base, glass plates were used.
Application of the composite solution was carried out by the applicator of BYK
Gardner GmbH. The coated films were dried in a thermocouple at 30 ° C for 30-40
minutes. The thickness of the film was determined with the Profecure Veeco Dektak
150. The thickness of the films after drying was 2-7 μm.
In the same way thin films were prepared for composite material consisting of
polystyrene and luminophore 6 (at a concentration of 0.01%).
1.4. Measuring equipment, methods and software
For prepared samples thickness, absorption, excitation and luminescence spectra,
crystal parameters, thermal stability and other characteristics were determined in the
work. In each experiment, a different measuring device was used.
Prepared thin film thickness is 1-10 m. Monitoring of obtained thin film
thickness was conducted after the process of evaporation with the help of a Z−scan
technique on the confocal microscope (Leica LSM TCSP−5). The thickness was
determined from the shift of the maximum of the scanning laser beam signal reflected
from the surfaces of the film and substrate (see Fig. 4).
The transmission, absorption and reflection spectra of thin film samples in the
visible range were obtained by a microspectrophotometer (MSP500, Anstronm Sun
Tech). The transmission and absorption spectra of solutions were taken at room
temperature using Shimadzu MCP-2200 UV-VIS spectrophotometer. Concentration of
compounds in solvent was 10-5
mol/l. Prepared solutions was filled in fluorescent
quartz quivets with 1 cm optical path length to perform measurements.
43
„Edinburg Instruments Fluorescence Spectrometer FS920” equipment, supplied by
xenon lamp (Fig. 5) was used for measurements of excitation and luminescence
spectra. The photoluminescence relative quantum yield for luminophore solutions was
calculated using a standard solution of rhodamine 6G in ethanol ( = 0.88).
Nanosecond flash lamp (pulse duration 1 ns, pulse repetition frequency up to
100 kHz) was used to determine the kinetics of decay of luminescence. The time
constant for dye kinetics was obtained by deconvolution; hence the less obtained
constant is 100 ps. The kinetics of luminescence decay was measured at the maximum
of luminescence for the studied samples. The µF920H xenon flash lamp was used to
measure phosphorescence.

luminescence of a thin films samples. Argon laser with wavelengths 458, 476, 488,
496, and 514 nm was used for excitation of luminescence. A femtosecond laser with
emission wavelengths 800, 900, 1000 nm was used to measure the two-photon
absorbance fluorescence.

The structural properties of the thin films were determined by X-ray diffraction
(XRD) using the SmartLab RIGAKU diffractometer with Cu-Kα radiation (λ =
1.543 Ǻ) operated at an acceleration voltage of 9 kV. The Rigaku SmartLab is a fully
automated system that includes the vertical goniometer with high resolution, parallel-
beam optics, shoulder-swivel module of goniometer for analysis in the sample plane
and an optional 9-kW X-ray tube. Experimental data were collected at λ = 1.543 Å
(Cu-Kα line) at 4 ° <2θ <30 ° in the range of angles at a resolution of 0.0020% step
from a 5x5 mm size area.
Diffraction data for monocrystals were collected on a Bruker-Nonius KappaCCD
diffractometer using graphite monochromated Mo-Kα radiation (λ = 0.71073 Å). The
crystal structures were solved by direct methods and refined by full-matrix least
squares using SHELXL97 program package [32]. For further details, see
crystallographic data for these compounds deposited with the Cambridge
Crystallographic Data Centre [33]. Copies of the data can be obtained, free of charge,
on application to CCDC, 12 Union Road, Cambridge CB2 1EZ, UK.
The surface morphology of obtained samples was observed by the scanning
electron microscope TESCAN-VEGA LMU II at accelerating voltage 30 kV. The
thermostability of studied materials is carried out with the derivatograph Exstar6000
TG/DTA 6300. Derivative operating mode: starting temperature: Ts = 30 °C, interval
is 30-400 °C, heating rate 10o/min, end temperature: 400 °C, retention time: 10 min,
the sample is heated in an aluminum cup.
The distribution of electron levels, electron transitions, their energy and
probability, values and changes of dipole moment, and other parameters of molecules
of luminescent compounds were obtained from quantum chemical calculations using
AM1 [34,35], ZINDO/S [36,37] and ab initio (with DFT approach [38]) methods.

2. RESULTS OF LUMINESCENT MATERIALS STUDY
2.1. Effect of molecular structure on optical properties
It is known that 3-substituted benzanthrone derivatives exhibited the following
disposition of the energetic levels [39]: Tππ*<Sππ
*<Tnπ
*<Snπ
*
In this case, the long-wave band of the absorption spectrum in the visible region is
a band of charge transfer (CT), due to π→π* electron transfer during S0→S1 transition.
Therefore optical properties of the benzanthrone dyes are related to the extent of the
polarisation of the molecule upon irradiation, resulting from the electron donor–
acceptor interaction within the chromophoric system and so may be influenced by the
environmental effect of the media upon this interaction [39].
The electron donor–acceptor interaction within
3-substituted benzanthrone occurs between its electron-
accepting carbonyl group and the electron-donating groups
in the C-3 position of the chromophoric system. The path
of the charge transfer is given on Fig. 6. Obviously, the
distribution of electron levels and hence their optical
properties are largely dependent on the electron donor
properties of substituents R1 and R2.

Fig. 7. Luminescence spectra of luminophore 6 in crystals, polystyrene films
and composite materials (with arsenic trisulphide and Disperbyk-161).
These work deals with optical properties (absorption, excitation and luminescence
spectra) of benzanthrone luminophores in thin layers, crystals, polymer matrices, as
well as in various organic solvents with comparison of obtained data and
environmental effects analysis.
For luminescent properties of 3-piperidinobenzanthrone (6) in various media, it
was found that crystals exhibit an unstructured broad luminescence band at 570-620
nm, the polystyrene matrix luminescence band shifts to the shortest wavelength, while
46
in the presence of arsenic trisulphide and Disperbyk-161, the emission peak has
bathochromic shift to 10 nm (see Fig. 7). The obtained data show more polar
surrounding media in composite material in comparison with polystyrene and crystals
of dyes 6, which is detected by this luminophore having pronounced polarity sensor
properties.

In recent years, the ability of some luminophores to change its emission colour in
surrounding media with different polarity, or solvatochromism, is of great scientific
interest because such luminescent dyes can be used as polarity indicators, colorimetric
sensors for volatile organic compounds, in microscopy for objects visualization [40].

Luminescence spectra data for amine and amidino derivatives of benzanthrone in
solids and various organic solvents with different dielectric permeability are compared
in Tables 1 and 2. The luminescence spectra are unstructured and high Stokes shifts
47
are observed (up to 160 nm in chloroform and 217 nm in ethanol for amidines, up to
189 nm in chloroform and 212 nm in ethanol for amino derivatives), which is
explained by the relaxation of the excited state to another molecule's geometry and the
intramolecular charge transfer nature of the excited states.
Observed bathochromic shift of luminescence band with increasing polarity of the
solvent indicates π→ π* electron transitions during absorption and emission.
Both luminophore groups exhibit intense luminescence in solutions in the range of
wavelengths 540-670 nm demonstrating a positive solvatochromism, which is more
pronounced for amidines (the bathochromic shifts up to 110 nm from benzene solution
to ethanol solution) than amines (the bathochromic shifts up to 77 nm).
This effect can be explained by a
greater solvent relaxation effect on energy
reducing of the excited state for amidine
derivative (see Fig. 8), due to stronger
interaction between solvent molecules and
stronger donor (than amines) amidine
group.
It is known that solids (for example,
thin films), which consist of donor-
acceptor molecules, are characterized by
strong intramolecular interactions, but
weak intermolecular interactions.
Therefore, the optical and electrical
properties of solid state systems are
determined mainly by the features of
individual molecules [41].
Fig. 8. Jablonsky fluorescence diagram with
solvent relaxation
In order to better understand the processes taking place in molecules of
luminescent dyes, quantum chemical semiempirical calculations were performed for
optimization of molecular geometry, for determination of the charge distribution and
electron energy levels in these molecules. The benzanthrone amines 3-7 and amidines
14-21 in solid state display fluorescence emission in the region 590–650 nm similarly
to data in chloroform solutions except amino dervative 5 and amidines 17, 19 and 21,
for which the fluorescence of the solids has a maxima similar to that of ethanol.
With observed changes of properties (obviously change of dielectric constant) of
solid state significant reduction in luminescence intensity is also found for amine 5.
But detected differences in the location of the emission band for amidines in solid
state and organic solvents do not affect their luminescence intensity. From calculation
48
of the energy of the highest molecular orbit (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied
molecular orbit (LUMO), it was found that the investigated luminophores are typical
dielectrics, since the energy of the restricted zone for amines is 6-7 eV, whereas this
energy for amidines is by 1 eV less than that of amines, what can be explained by a
larger conjugation chain in amidine molecules and stronger electron donor properties
of amidine, and hence a more efficient transfer of charges from the 3-amidine group
to the carbonyl group.

When comparing the calculations of the dipole moments of the molecules of
studied compounds, it has been found that, although amidines have a higher dipole
moment in the ground state, its changes (3.7-4.1 D), during light absorption are less
than for amines - 5.5 to 5.7 D. The spectral shifts dependence from the solvent
dielectric constant is often interpreted in accordance with The Ooshika-Lippert-Matag
equation describing the Stokes shift as a function of the change in dipole moment [42]:
But the calculations based on experimental parameters by the Lippert-Mataga
method give for amidines much larger change values of dipole moment - 5-6 D [43].
Such data of dipole moments show that the molecules of the studied luminophores in
the excited state are much more polar than in the ground state, what is associated with
49
significant intramolecular charge transfer. The calculations show the direction of the
vector of dipole moment from the carbonyl group to the electron donor group:
Fig. 9. Vector of dipole moment for compounds 3 and 12.
Information about the lifetime of the excited state can be obtained from the kinetic
data of the luminescence decay, therefore, studies of luminescence decay kinetics were
carried out for samples of luminophores in solid state and also for comparison in
solutions. The luminescence decay time was measured in the wavelength of the
maximum luminescence peak.
Single-exponential reduction of luminescence intensity with a time constant of
3.5 ns to 10 ns was obtained for all studied substances. A more accurate description of
the experimental data on the criterion of Pirsson
[44] was achieved by taking two
exponents except amidine 17 (see Table 5). This means that excited molecules have
multiple conformations with different luminescence decay mechanisms. It has been
found that life times of excited states of amidines are less than for amino derivatives.

Comparing the lifetime values of excited state of luminophore 6 in solutions and
solids (Fig. 10), it was found that the lifetime of excited state in a nonpolar solvent
(benzene) is lower than that of dimethylformamide and solids. These data indicate
stabilization of the excited state by solvation with polar molecules of the solvent or by
neighboring molecules in the crystals. Studies in the luminescence kinetics showed
that the investigated 3-amino and 3-amidino derivatives belong to fluorophores, since
the lifetime of their excited state does not exceed 20 ns.
50
Fig. 10. Luminescence kinetics at wavelengths corresponding to the luminescence
maximum of substance 6 in benzene, dimethylformamide and solids (from above).
In recent years, researchers have been attracted by phosphorescent organic
substances (with a lifetime of 0.1-10 ms) with a perspective for producing highly
effective emitting materials [45-47]. It is known that phosphorescence is observed for
organic compounds containing sufficiently heavy elements - metal complexes or
bromine/iodine atoms [48]. The high luminescence intensity of such materials appears
due to the total emission from singlet and triplet levels.
51
In literature researchers describe organic compounds with carbonyl and bromine
atom molecules [19,20], which exhibit intense phosphorescence due to the formation
of rigid structures caused by the interaction of oxygen and bromine atoms, where
processes without emission (molecular oscillation and rotation) become unlikely.
Consequently, it was worthwhile to study 3-amidino derivatives of benzanthrone with
bromine atoms - compounds 22-25. It has been found that all studied 2-bromo-3-
amidino derivatives show fluorescent properties in solutions but are non-luminescent
in solids. Consequently, the introduction of the bromine atom to the benzanthrone
system results in the fluorescence quenching, but does not lead to the appearance of
phosphorescence.
To find out the effect of bromine, the distribution of electron density in the excited
and ground state of compounds 12 and 22, which have the same amidine group and
differ only in the presence of bromine atom, was considered. As seen from Fig. 11, in
the presence of a bromine atom, changes in the electron density distribution in both the
higher occupied and the lower unoccupied molecular orbitals are observed, resulting
in a lower electron density at the electron donor amidine group compared to a non-
containing bromine atom analogous amidine 12. Reduction of the electron density on
the amidine nitrogen atom and at the same time, the small difference in the electron
density of this atom in the HOMO and LUMO indicates a lack of transition of n → π *
electrons in the molecules of 2-bromo-3-amidino derivative, which probably causes
the loss of luminescence in solid state. Calculations have shown that the introduction
of the bromine atom results in an increase in the band gap by 1 eV due to increasing of
LUMO energy.

52
For all the studied compounds common in the change of electron density
distribution caused by the absorption of light, is the displacement of electron density
towards the aromatic system with the transfer of electrons from lowest unoccupied
molecular orbital to highest occupied and of compound in the direction of the carbonyl
group.
Due to considerable interest in the development and application of luminescent
polymers, mainly for polymer-based OLEDs and lasers [49-51], new copolymers with
vinylcarbazole and aminobenzanthrone units were obtained and their properties were
investigated [52].
The obtained copolymers have an intense luminescence and are potentially capable
of conducting the electrons (along the resedues of vinyl carbazole), and the holes
(along benzanthrone aromatic system). In order to characterize the spectral properties
of the developed polymeric materials, the emission spectra were recorded.
The obtained spectroscopic data show the dependence of
the luminescence parameters of the developed polymer
material on the amount of 3-allylaminobenzanthrone
residues in the synthesized polymeric material: the lower
concentration of 3-N-allylaminobenzanthrone, the wider the
emission band and the closer the emitted light to the white
colour, what can be explained by the overlaps of polyvinyl-
carbazole (green emission) and copolymer (red emission)
luminescence spectra.
With the increasing of content of aminobenzanthrone
residues in the synthesized polymer, a red shift of
luminescence is observed: from 595 nm (0.5%) to 650 nm
(8%) (see Fig. 12). This peculiarity can be considered as an
advantage of the developed materials as it enables to
regulate the optical properties of the polymer material
depending on the application needs.

2.2. X-ray diffractometry
Crystal structure of the obtained monocrystals and the arrangement of thin films
were studied by X-ray diffractometry. The amorphous structure was demonstrated for
all thin films of polymeric materials, as well as for all thermally sublimated samples of
luminophores, excepting of 3-N,N-diacetylaminobenzanthrone (2).
Fig. 13. XRD pattern of 3-N,N-diacetilaminobenzanthrone film .
Figure 13 shows the XRD spectra of the investigated thin films. A few peaks in the
XRD diagram indicate some crystalline of the obtained organic film, the main peak
(2 =13.97°, d = 6.34 Å) and the additional peak (2 Å = 23.22°, d = 3.83 Å).
These data are in accordance with X-ray structural analysis of monocrystal, in
which the crystals of the compound molecule 2 are arranged in parallel layers at a
distance of ~ 6.5 Å showing head to tail arrangement [53].
In recent years, extensive research has been carried out on the clarification of the
correlation between the crystalline structure and photophysical parameters of organic
compounds in solid state [8]. This was due to the observation that not only amorphous
organic matter exhibits intense solid state luminescence, but also organic crystals can
be brightly emissive.
In a series of work [54-56] were showed that aggregation of a molecule does not
always eliminate emissions, but in some cases, quite the opposite, causes
luminescence. This phenomenon was called aggregation-induced luminescence.
Previous studies have shown that the luminescence of solids is closely related to
molecule packaging in a crystal. For example, intermolecular π-π-stacking in crystals
were often found to cause the quenching of luminescence [57], but in other cases, on
the contrary, closed intermolecular contacts contribute to luminescence [20,58]; the
presence of isolated monomers or formation of dimers can increase the intensity of
luminescence [59].
For this reason, at the work the effects of crystalline molecular packing on the
emission of benzanthrone luminophores are studied the monocrystals of several
54
studied compounds were prepared and the crystal structures of 20 amino and amidino
derivatives of benzanthrone were determined.

56
The obtained data about the crystalline packing of investigated compounds were
analyzed and the following was found: amino derivatives (see Fig. 14) have intensive
luminescence due to the planar antiparallel packaging of the so-called "pine" type
when part of the molecule is packed perpendicularly or almost perpendicular to each
other (compounds 3, 6, 7).
Amines 8, 9 exhibit intense emission, but their crystal packing is not "pine"-type,
although phenyl groups of dye 8 are perpendicular to the benzanthrone aromatic
systems, what may be regarded almost as a packing of "pine" type.
Amine 9 has interesting molecular packing, in which only a few molecules form
strong π-π-bonds, while the remaining molecules are too far away so aromatic systems
are able to interact - apparently such structure contributes to the formation of excimers
and their luminescence [59]. In crystals molecules of weakly luminescent amines 1, 2
and 5 are packaged by parallel planes.
From amidine derivatives intense emission was observed for compounds with
molecular packing of "pine" type, such as luminophores 11, 12, 14 and 21 (see Fig.
15). But there is one exception: molecules of highly luminescent amidine 17 are
packed in parallel planes, but phenyl groups are located almost perpendicular to
benzanthrone moieties. This compound in contrast to other studied dyes has a unique
so-called columnar molecular packing:
Fig. 16. Packing diagram of compound 17.
In the literature there is evidence that crystals with a columnar pack exhibit intense
luminescence [60]. Molecules of non-emissive amidines 10 and 15 in crystal are
packaged in parallel or almost parallel, but molecules of highly luminescent amidine
16 are packed according to the "pine" type, although there ππ interaction between
aromatic systems is not occurred, because the distance between aromatic systems is
3.73 Å, but a distance for effective ππ-stacking requires 3,30-3,40 Å.
57
22 23
24
25
Fig. 17. 2 Packing diagram of 2-bromo-3-amidino derivatives.
The crystalline structure of 2-bromo-3-amidino derivatives was also analyzed
(Fig. 17). As has already been noted, such compounds have been expected to be
phosphorescent, but it was established that the introduction of a bromine atom
quenches the luminescence. For four investigated derivatives was found that two of
them have a crystalline packing of "pine" type (22 and 25), but two - antiparallel
packing (23 and 24). In the crystal structure of these compounds there are π-π stacking
interactions as well as other benzanthrone derivatives. For the investigated compounds
these π-π interactions are weaker than that in unbromated compounds. The halogen
bonds of Br∙∙∙Br occur in the crystal structure of the bromated compounds. Obviously,
the luminescence is extinguished by an over-dense packaging of molecules with an
array of bromine atoms, due to which non-radiative electron transitions are dominated
in molecules. Moreover, the interaction between the carbonyl group and the bromine
atom is not observed, what, according to literature data [19,20], is necessary for the
occurrence of phosphorescence.

2.3. Microscopic and thermal analysis
Confocal and electron microscopes were used for microscopic study of the
obtained thin-layer samples. The optical properties of composite material (which
consist of 3-piperidinobenzanthrone (6), arsenic trisulphide and Disperbyk-161) were
studied prior to and after laser radiation (532 nm). It is known that irradiation of
arsenic trisulphide causes its aggregation with following obscuration in the visible
range used in optical recording systems [30].
Fig. 18. Non-irradiated and irradiated area (inside the circle) of obtained
composite thin film in reflected light (left) and with its luminescence (right).
Therefore, studies about the effect of adding organic dye on the properties of
arsenic trisulphide-containing material were carried out. A 5-fold increase in
luminescence in irradiated layers with a content of 0.0009% of amine 6 (see Fig. 18)
has been found, which is obviously related to the concentration of luminophores
outside the created aggregates due to the different solubility of luminophore. The
found phenomenon can be used to create new materials for optical modulation
systems.
Fig. 19. The surface images of the thin films of compound 2
The surface morphology of obtained thin film samples of compound 2 was
observed by the electron-scanning microscope. Obtained results confirm the X-ray
diffractometry data about formation of ordered structure during thermal sublimation
59
process. It is seen formation of a polycrystalline organic structure with the crystallite
size about 200–300 nanometers (see Fig. 19.).
Fig. 20. Microcrystallites of complexes of amidines 11, 13 and 23 with chromium.
A study of amidine-chromium complexes by SEM has shown that this powder
consists of stretched or needle-like microcrystallites and the chromium atoms are
located inward these structures because microanalysis of surface of microcrystallites
shows only C, N and O atoms presence.
Because thermal stability of used organic materials is important feature for many
practical applications, a thermodynamic thermal analysis was performed for studied
luminophores. The results of thermal analysis data shows that all of the amino and
amidino derivatives are thermally stable to 300-3500C, losing no more than 10-15% of
the initial mass (see Fig. 21), that is a sufficient thermostability, for example, to form
thin-layer structures under thermal sublimation technique.
Fig.21. Thermal analysis data for compounds 2 and 7.
60
But it was found that the investigated amidine-chromium complexes, unlike the
starting amidines, are less thermally stable, and these complexes decompose before
2500C with formation of initial amidino derivatives. Therefore, thin films of the
corresponding amidines are formed from their chromium complexes in thermal
sublimation conditions.

SUMMARY
1. Novel luminescent organic compounds have been studied; their absorption,
luminescence and excitation spectra have been obtained. It has been found that a
number of investigated materials exhibit intensive luminescence in solid state,
which is a prerequisite for the production of electroluminescent materials. The
obtained data are compared for luminophores in solids, in surrounding media
with different dielectric permeability (in organic solvents and in polymer
matrices) and in vacuum (by semiempirical calculation methods). Environmental
polarity is estimated to have a significant impact on the emission characteristics
of luminophores.
2. Crystals of studied luminophores were grown and X-ray crystal structures were
studied. Analyzing the fluorescence characteristics of solids in relation to RSA
data, the relationships between the chemical structure of the investigated
substances, the crystal packaging and the intensity of luminescence were found.
3. The presence of a bromine atom in a molecule has been found to cause changes
in the energy levels and distribution of electrons, as well as in crystal packing,
which results no phosphorescence is observed for bromine-containing
compounds, and also fluorescence disappears.
4. Thin films of luminophores were obtained by thermal sublimation method and
their optical properties, surface relief and arrangement were investigated.
5. The methods for preparing of new luminescent copolymers have been
developed; optical properties of obtained copolymers have been investigated. It
has been found that changing the composition of copolymers changes the spectral
characteristics of luminescence, which can be practically used to form OLED
structures.
6. Optical properties of novel composite luminophore / As2S3 /polymer before and
after laser radiation treatment were investigated. The changes of luminescence
intensity in composite materials due to photoinduced processes in arsenic sulfide
have been found.
