Photosynthesis

• The process by which plants take in CO2 and H2O in the presence of sunlight to produce chemical energy using Chlorophyll.

• Reactants = CO2 + H2O + light energy must also be present but is not considered a reactant.

• Products = Sugar (C6H12O6) + O2

Respiration

• The process by which plants and animals break down stored chemical energy to produce energy for cells to move, grow, and reproduce.

• Reactants = Sugar (C6H12O6) + O2• Products = CO2 + H2O + energy (ATP)

Draw the Photosynthesis/Respiration Cycle.

• Producers – Create their own energy by converting energy from the sun.

• Plants are producers.

• Consumers – Can’t create their own energy so they get energy from producers or other consumers.

• Primary consumers get energy from producers.

• Secondary consumers get energy from other consumers.

• Decomposers get energy from breaking down dead things.

Relationships

• Predator prey• One organism eats

another organism

Relationships

• Mutualism• Two individuals of

different species work together and both individuals benefit.

• Clown fish and seaanemone

mutualism

Relationships

• Parasitism• One organism benefits

while the other organism is harmed

• Mosquitos• Ticks • Tapeworms• Heartworms

Food chain

• Food chains show how energy transfers from one organism to another.

• In reality it is much more complex.

Food Web

• Most organisms don’t limit themselves to eating only one organism.

• Food webs show the relationships among many different organisms.

• Sun is the source of almost all energy.
