Prior to the time that Marie began quilting, she raised sheep, hand spun the yarn

and knitted many garments.

She displayed a beautiful hand-knit coat for which she had…

• Raised the sheep• Hand-spun the yarn• Wove the facing for the coat• Knit the coat• Hand embroidered a design on the lining

inside the coat

However, she has never worn the coat.

This quilt was made by Marie’s great-great grandmother who lived in a sod hut in Kansas. She made it for her daughter to keep warm when traveling to Green Bay. Lots of used clothing was used to fill the quilt.

It was found years later in a bag in an attic. Moths and mice had made holes in it.

About 30 years ago, Marie lost her leg in a farm accident and spent 9 months in hospitals. Her friends made blocks for this lap quilt for her, while she was having plastic surgery. It is the first quilt that Marie hand-quilted. Most of the friends who made the blocks are now deceased.
