• AngelicaMcDaniel,presidentofGammaZetaandgraduatestudentintheprofessionalcounselingprogramintheCollegeofEducation(COE),wonfirstplaceintheEntry-LevelStudentsCategoryofthe2018-19LeadershipEssayContestsponsoredbyChiSigmaIotaandCACREP.

• AyshaHarris(picturedatright)hitathree-pointerlateinthethirdquarteragainstChristianBrothersthatgaveher16onthenightandmoreimportantlygaveher1,000pointsinhercareer.Shebecamethe11thplayerinschoolhistorytoeclipsethatmarkandthefirstsinceTaiEllishitthemarkduringthe2005-06season.

• TwoUWGalumniwerenamedsemifinalistsforthe2019FulbrightU.S.StudentProgram,aprestigiousscholarshipprogramthatoffersgrantsforstudyandresearchincountriesaroundtheworld.WestPoindextergraduatedinspring2018withbachelor’sdegreesinphilosophyandpsychology.Heisasemifinalistforastudy/researchFulbrighttoBelgiumtopursueagraduatedegreeinphilosophy.DarriusShawisa2014graduatewithabachelor’sdegreeinbiologywithaconcentrationinsecondaryeducation.Heisasemifinalistforastudy/researchFulbrighttothetheUnitedKingdomtopursueamaster’sdegreeineducation.

• CollegeofSocialSciences(COSS)AssociateProfessorDr.HazelCole’sco-authoredtext,“Race,GenderandImageRepairTheory:HowDigitalMediaChangetheLandscape,”wasreleasedrecently.UsingaCriticalRaceTheorylens,thebookexploresthemesthatarerelevanttothesociopoliticallandscapeof21st-centuryAmerica,includingraceandgenderrepresentation,social

• COSSAssociateProfessorDr.EmilyMcKendry-Smithpublishedabookchapter,“‘NewCongregationalism’inNepal:TheBrahmaKumarisandtheRationalizationofHinduReligiousPractice,”in“ReligioninContext,”aGermantextbook.

• Dr.BrentGilles,alongwithfellowprincipalinvestigatorsDrs.StaceyBrittonandRebeccaGaultinCOE,receivedmorethan$12,000fromCSBrittonInc.toprovideprofessionaldevelopmentandcurriculumplanningforK-12teachersonthetopicoflocalwatersheds.

• Abookproposalco-editedbyCOSSAssociateProfessorsDrs.JenniferBeggsWeberandPamHuntKirkwasacceptedbyCambridgeScholarsPublishing.Theforthcomingcollectionwillbecenteredonthetelevisionseries“Shameless”andtitled“ShamelessSociology:CriticalPerspectivesonaPopularTelevisionSeries.”

• FiveUWGstudents’abstractswereacceptedforpresentationatthesecondWorldCongressonUndergraduateResearch(WorldCUR).WorldCURwillbeheldinOldenburg,Germany,thisMay.Morethan250abstractswereacceptedfrom37countries,withonly106fromNorthAmerica.FourofthosepresentationswillbepresentedbythefiveUWGstudents:KatlynBradshaw,JawonnaColeman,JennaMiller,JesseMorrisandPerryWasdin.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS

• Dr.CelesteLee,asociologyassistantprofessorinCOSS,publishedanarticlein“CommunicationEducation,”titled“Advocate-mentoring:acommunicativeresponsetodiversityinhighereducation.”

• RichardsCollegeofBusinessAssociateProfessorDr.AgnieszkaChwialkowska’sarticle,“Canmarketingcommunicationprimeyoutoact‘green’?”,hasbeenacceptedforpublicationintheManagementofSustainableDevelopmentJournal.

• Dr.AmyIrby-Shasanmi,anassistantprofessorintheDepartmentofSociologyinCOSS,publishedabookchapter,“ExperiencingHealth,Illness,andMedicalCare,”inthetext“SociologyinAction.”

• Dr.MaryanneWeatherillinCOEhasbeeninvitedtoWesternKentuckyUniversityinBowlingGreen,Kentucky,topresentherresearchandtodiscussopportunitiesforcollaborationonaspeechandexerciseprogram,Bingocize,sheutilizesinnursinghomes.

• UWGreceivedtwomeritwinnerawardsatthe33rdannualEducationalAdvertisingAwardsfromHigherEdMarketing.Thismakesmorethan20national/regionalawardsUWGanditspartnerMindpowerhasreceivedsincethe“GoWest”brandlaunched.UWGreceivedawardsforspecialinstitutionalvideoandtelevisionspotforthe“WhoGoesWest?”spot.

• TimikaBoykin,ahumanresourcescoordinatorinUWGCampusPlanning&Facilities,wasacceptedintotheEmergingLeadersNetwork,aTeachersInsuranceandAnnuityAssociation(TIAA)consortium.Thisgroupwillmeetin-personfourtimesoverthenexttwoyears,andtheywillhavemultipleopportunitiestoformrelationships,deepentheirHRknowledge,andreflectuponandbuildtheirleadershipskills.Boykinwasselectedfromafieldofmorethan100applicantsfortheprogram.

• TheCOEhaspartneredwithFultonCountySchoolstoprovidepaidteacherinternshipstohelpmeetthegrowingneedsofFultonCountySchoolsandtotrainfutureeducationgraduates.Todate,studentshavereceivedatotalof$18,000indisbursements,withanotherroundtooccurinMarch2019.

• UWGrankedinthe10BestOnlineDoctoralProgramsinGeorgiabyOnlinePh.D.Programs.COEhousesthreeofthefourprogramsmentionedintherankingwithdoctoraldegreesinhighereducationadministration,professionalcounselingandsupervision,andschoolimprovement,withTHSSONhousingtheotherprogram:thedoctoraldegreeinnursingeducation.

• TheCOEisrankedNo.2inEd.D.OnlineProgramsbyCollegeValuesOnline,specificallyforitsprograminschoolimprovement,whichinvolvesanintensiveoncampusorientationandnineavailableconcentrations.

• ChristopherJett,anassociateprofessorintheCollegeofScienceandMathematics,wasawardedthe2019EarlyCareerAwardfromtheAssociationofMathematicsTeacherEducators(AMTE).Thisprestigious,nationalawardisgiventoamathematicsteachereducatorwhohasmadesignificantcontributionstothefieldwithinthefirstdecadeofreceivingthedoctorate.
