Prior SKE – uptake
Data have been requested from the NCTL about uptake during 2011-12 and 12-13 – specifically broken down to show how popular the different lengths of SKE courses have been.
This will hopefully be available from the NCTL shortly.

Physics (weeks)
On 29th May 2013, the NCTL contacted universities with information on their proposed changes to SKE.
• no financial support for "short" courses (50-100hr);
• plans to only fund Chemistry, Physics, Computing and Maths;
• outstanding ITT providers can access “long” SKE courses;
• greater use of summer schools and on-line/distance approaches;
• can be undertaken alongside ITT, or after ITT, but prior to QTS;
• SD schools will be able to "draw down resources from the NCTL"
Current SKE - major changes
Many responses to the consultation process recommended that this proposal will not help students reach the Teaching Standards for subject knowledge.
Only these universities had guaranteed PGCE places for 2014-15 and could request 24-36 weeks SKE provision for their trainees.

For what reasons the allocation of SKE to universities in… 2013-14 was not made until 8 Nov.
SKE in HoP Hansard: HC Deb, 18 December 2013, c686W
David Laws: Following the review of the SKE programme and subsequent consultation with stakeholders, we have changed the way SKE operates.
Once… providers had [ITT] allocations confirmed on 31st Oct, they could be informed on 8th Nov that they could access funding for SKE. This was to increase their capacity to recruit from 21st Nov, when the UCAS Teacher Training application system for ITT opened.
