health and wellness.

OPTIONS FOR INFERTILE COUPLES
Adoption

Semen and sperm is injected into the top of the woman’s uterus with a needle.
In-vitro Fertilization Drugs are used to over stimulate the woman’s ovaries
8-10 eggs are removed and united with sperm in a petridish
3-4 eggs are injected back into the woman.
Twins are common
Surrogate Mother Eggs and sperm are removed from the biological mother
and father or other fertile adult
Eggs and sperm are united in a petri dish and implanted into another woman who carries the baby full term, and delivers it for the natural parents
PREGNANCY OVERVIEW
The first trimester (months 1-3) is
essential to the proper development of the
infant.
This is when all organs, nerve cells, and brain
cells develop.
This is when most spontaneous abortions
occur. Caused by abnormal development,
nature’s way of eliminating a chromosomal
abnormality
It is important that all necessary nutrients be
available to the fetus in order to develop
properly.
PREGNANCY OVERVIEW
The second trimester (months 4-6)
is often referred to as the “golden
trimester”
When the mother generally feels the
best.
Morning sickness and nausea have
generally disappeared.
Mother is quite comfortable.
PREGNANCY OVERVIEW
Third trimester (months 7-9) is
when the body systems mature.
Important months for the baby as its
organs prepare to function on their own.
Fat accumulated during this time will
give the baby a “head start” on life.
PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS
Spontaneous Abortion/Miscarriage:
Loss of pregnancy during the first 20 weeks (before 5 months) before the embryo or fetus can survive on it’s own outside of the uterus.
Stillbirth:
Delivery of a fetus that died after 20 weeks (5 months).
Premature Delivery:
Delivery before 37 weeks, and has immature lungs at the time of birth.
Pre-Eclampsia:
A condition that includes high blood pressure, swelling, rapid weight gain, headaches, blurred vision, etc.
PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS
Eclampsia
Occurrence of seizures, coma and even death
Gestational Diabetes:
Diabetes caused by pregnancy. Usually diabetes goes away after delivery.
Vericose Veins:
Swollen, discolored, sore veins in the legs or abdomen.
Placenta Previa:
Condition due to the placenta being too low in the uterus. This can cause complications at birth because the placenta blocks the birth canal during delivery.
PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS
Incompetent Cervix:
A condition where the walls of the cervix are not
strong enough to hold the baby inside the uterus.
Surgery is performed to sew the cervix closed
permanently until delivery.
Rh Factor:
A disorder that occurs when Rh positive blood cells of
the fetus enter the Rh negative bloodstream of the
mother. This is a concern when the mother’s blood
type is negative and the father’s blood is positive and
the baby receives the father’s blood type. A
medication called Rhogam is given during and after
pregnancy which kills any of the baby’s blood cells
that might have entered the mother’s blood.
