KAVALA

Kavala is an important port οn the Balkan Peninsula.

It has been inhabited since Neolithic times.

It gains great prosperity during the Macedonian after Philip II

In the time of Romans upgraded the major commercial port Via Egnatia road who run through it, but at the same time it was made the target of Goth raids.

Kavala is for the tourist, a pole of attraction for its 2,500 years of history, the harmonious coexistence of modern with the old, the combination of the mountain with the sea, the varied cultural events, which are held in modern and ancient theaters and the chances for several excursions to such places as in the nearby bright green island of Thassos and the archaeological area of Filippi.

The port connects Καναlα and Thassos as well as other islands in the Aegean Sea by ship and ferry.

Ιn the city center the old tobacco warehouses still give forth α strong smell of tobacco, although most of them have been transformed into night clubs, cafes or malls.

The castle is the trade mark of the city. The fist wall was built in the 5th century b.c., to fortify the city of Neapolis.

When you arrive at the Castle, you can get a fantastic view of Thasos and a noble city lying before your eyes.

FILIPPI

During your visit to Kavala do not miss the opportunity to visit the ancient theatre of Philippi, an important monument of the region.

The town was founded by the people of Thassos, but took the name from Philip B' father of Alexander the Great in 356 b.c

It is located at a distance of 15 km from Kavala and, thanks to conscientious archaeological digging work, it currently offers visitors deep insight into the ancient Greek, Roman an Byzantine history.

You can visit the Ancient Theatre, the Town Walls, The Roman Forum, Basilicas dating back to the old Christian times…

Saint Paul the Apostle stopped off in Filippi and founded the first Christian Church in Europe, also in Zygaktis river he baptized the first Christian woman in Europe, Lydia Filippesia (Lydia from Filippi).

In the summer the ancient theatre hosts cultural events, with emphasis on ancient Greek tragedies and comedies.

All over the island there are amazing beaches and is a great challenge to the visitors and a binding promise of enjoyment.

Access to Thassos is very easy as there are many daily connections by ferry-boat .
