What is a Biosphere?

✓ It is a globally recognised accolade for a region

✓ Biosphere status is awarded by UNESCO

✓ A landscape which is unique

✓ A strong cultural identity

Where are the other Biospheres?

✓ 701 existing Biospheres around the world

✓ 7 in the UK, but none in East Anglia

UNESCO ask that Biospheres:

✓ Meet the needs of the current and future

residents i.e. promote sustainability

✓ Improve the natural environment

✓ Try out new science and technology

How to become a Biosphere…….

• Find an organisation willing to take on applying to UNESCO ✓

• Find some funds for the organisation to do the job ✓ (in partnership with Wildlife Trust

BCN)

• Define the Biosphere area sort of….

• Get a partnership of interested partners together ✓

• Talk – to everyone about what the Biosphere should do and who wants to be involved✓

• Define what the Biosphere will do, how and who will run it, how it will be funded

• Complete the application form, submit it in 2021, wait until 2022 to hear if successful.
