Ga-
brielle Devana was born in Jakarta on
June 19, 1993. “Gaby”, as she is often
called by her closed friends, is a
PresUniver majoring in management
batch 2011. Her favorite color is purple
and her hobby is photo shoot (editor’s
note: that’s why we feature her in
April’s edition as she is indeed photo-
genic!).
As a Presuniver, she also involves in
various student organizations and activi-
ties. For instance, she was elected as
the Vice President of PUMA Interna-
tional Business, the Vice Presi-
dent of ICX PresUniv AIESEC, and
member of the PACT. Her name recent-

Being a student of President Uni-
versity is one of the best things
that ever happened to me. I got
some information about PresUniv
from my senior when I was a sen-
ior high student. He said that
President University was an Inter-
national campus, the learning ac-
tivities used English, and there
were so many foreign students so
that they had to communicate in
English all the time. I wanted to be
fluent in English hence I chose
PresUniv to continue my study.
Even my English was not so good
at that time, fortunately my
friends and lecturers here always
helped me to make my English bet-
ter and better. Oh yeah, and I was
really amazed when I arrived here,
I saw the dormitory was so big, the
facilities of dormitory and also the
campus were sufficient. I hope that
most students will come to study in
President University, not only
from Indonesia but also from for-
eign countries.

DEFINE YOUR LEADERSHIP
Why defining our leadership is im-
portant? In order to be a good leader,
we should be able to manage and en-
gage with other people, either our sub-
ordinates or supervisors.
In the opening session, Mr. Suresh
gave a speech for this seminar. He
mentioned, “Business is not talking
about making money, but how to
make people want to do whatever you
want them to do. Socialization is very
important in order to do business.”
This statement was one of the reasons
why PUMA of BA brought up this
topic.
The participants had a lot of fun join-
ing in this seminar. During the
seminar, there was a session when all
of the participants had to fill a paper
with statements. The purpose of this
session was to determine our personal
character and to find out what kind of
leaders we were. The types of leadership
were Direct, Spirit, Considerate, and
Systematic.
Furthermore, all participants were com-
manded to make a group with other par-
ticipants who had the same characters.
They were given three questions to
describe themselves. After finishing the
discussion session, each group should
present the answers. In this session, all
of the participants, both international and
local students showed their enthusiasm.
President University Major Assosiation
of Business Administration (PUMA BA)
proudly presents a seminar “Define Your
Leadership” by Ade Darmawansyah as
the planning, monitoring and evaluation
manager. As the youngest manager in his
company, he would like to share how to
be a good
leader. This event was held on Thursday,
March 1, 2012 at the Auditorium
building A, President University. Even
though, the host of this event was from
Business Administration program, there
were more than 130 students from 10
majors participated in this seminar.
As the summary of the seminar, Mr. Ade
explained the strengths and weaknesses
of each character, how to make a deal
and manage people with different types
of leadership.
“The seminar was great, the speaker is
also good. However, I would like to say
this is a workshop, not seminar. Even
though there are so many participants, I
still can feel the group discussion was
good,” Anthony Perkasa, PR 2010, com-
mented the events.

PresUnivers Visit Korea
The Korea Model United Nations
2012: 5th Winter Session was an
annual event held from the 31st
January to the 3rd February 2012.
The event was aimed to encourage
participants to experience how con-
ferences in the United Nations were
conducted. KMUN took place at Ko-
rea University Anam Campus,
S e o u l , K o r e a .
The President University Model
United Nations Club was dedicated
to support its member to be able to
join such conference, especially in
terms of sponsoring and supporting
all related activities and prepara-
tions. After a lengthy and tight se-
lection process since late 2011, Pres-
ident University was able to select
and send 11 delegates as partici-
pants, namely Andre Revian Danu –
the head of delegations, Dikta Pra-
dika, Achmad Fai-zal, Wening Pra-
nayadipta, and Rizky Muda Farsyah
from International Relations Batch
2010 and also Fajar Iqbal, Uswatun
Hasanah, Lia Margareth, Made
Yaya, Putu Ayu and Jonathan Davy
from International Relations Batch
2 0 1 1 .
The delegates departed from In-
donesia on January 29th this
year and they just returned to
Indonesia on February 5th. At-
tending winter conference would
be a very special experience for
the delegates because none of
them had ever experienced win-
ter conference before. Each of the
delegates was representing one
country, and allowed to choose
between two different commit-
tees, which
were ECOSOC
(Economic and
Social Council)
a n d N S S
(Nuclear Secu-
rity Summit).
In the ECOSOC
committee, the
delegates would
discuss two ma-
jor issues which
were Evaluat-
ing the role of
a d v a n c e d ,
emerging, and
infant economies in preventing com-
petitive currency devaluation and
discussing how to alleviate the nega-
tive consequences of austerity
measures in European countries. At
the same time, other delegates in
the Nuclear Security Summit would
discuss other two main agendas,
namely strengthening of IAEA and
protecting the nuclear material and
related facilities and preventing il-
licit trafficking of nuclear material
and technology.

Shu-Te University was

It was a usual sunny afternoon in
Cikarang. Some girls went out from
President University Student
Housing and walked to the west, away
from the student housing. No,
we were not talking about the famous
legend of “Journey to the West”. More
importantly, they were not a priest and
the 3 pupils. It looked like they were
in a hurry. An “angkot” came closer
and the driver asked whether they
were going to Lippo. One of them
smiled and said no to the driver…
They kept walking until the cross
junction. It was difficult to recognize a
small alley on the right side of the
road where they made their turn to a
small village named Simpangan.
There were many shabby
looking houses. Yes, the
residents were not prosper enough in
this village. There was an elementary
school,SDN 6 Simpangan. The
condition of the school was not far
better than the houses.
Back to the girls, they were following
the alley which was more like a
labyrinth if you did not know the
place quite well. The alley was so
narrow. Sometimes they had to move
aside when there was a
motorcycle coming from the opposite
direction. Eventually, there were about
40 children welcoming them
cheerfully because the girls were
going to teach the children for free.
The girls were Chariteam or Charity
Club’s members.
This activity was called “Chatiteach”.
It was a regular program of
President University Charity
Club conducted from
Monday to Friday, usually at 3 to
5 PM, in a resident’s house. As
for this time, the owner was Mrs.
Erna. She let her house to be used
by the children in that area to
study together. Everyday,
there were around 40 children (1st until
6th graders) coming to her house.
Of course she could not handle the
children all by herself, that was why the
chariteam was there to help her.
The children who gathered at her house
were lack of education. I ever taught a
6th grade student who could not answer
a simple math problem like 3x5.Imagine
a student who was going to
have a national exam but she still could
not answer a simple multiplication. But
fortunately, the children were
enthusiastic to study. Indeed they were
very dilligent and keen to learn.
One of the teacher was Audiva Navisha
(IR ’11). She said, “Teaching is so
amazing! Besides, I love the children, I
also want to share the knowledge that I
have. Eventhough I just can share a little,
but I believe it can be a big useful thing
for them.” Yup, that’s right! For your
info, this program is open to all
PresUnivers. If you want to contribute

packed crowd of
students, lecturers, and
industry represenatives,
the Internship and
Career Center held its
annual “CAREER DAY
AND CAMPUS HIRING
WEEK” attended by
many companies and
almost 250 graduating
students, alumni and
interns. The objective of
this program is to give
companies the
opportunity to recruit and select
talented graduates, alumni, and
interns. In total, there were 19
participating companies from
various industries, specifically
from manufacturing, IT Solution,
automotive, and retail business.
Some of the distinguished
companies participated in this
event were, PT. Astra
International, Tbk; Ranch Market
Indonesia, Panin Bank, Triputra

PRESUNIVERS VISIT TRANSCORP
Page 18 P R E S U N I V
In February 2012, PresUnivers from the Faculty of
Communication and Multimedia of President Uni-
versity Batch 2010 and 2011 visited Transcorp Ja-
karta, one of Indonesian television channels. The
visit was divided in three waves, on 22nd, 27th, and
28th of February 2012. The visits were conducted to
provide a real-life knowledge and experience about
the television industry
in Indonesia.
Activities conducted
at Transcorp Jakarta
included the presenta-
tions of Transcorp’s
founding history, pro-
grams, and duties of
each division. After
that, the students
were also invited for
a tour to see some studios available at that time and
how each program was carried out inside the studio.
"We were even invited to see the control room and
the master control room!” Theodora Balinge Lapenta
(PR'10) said enthusiastically. “Unfortunately, we
were just not allowed to enter the master control
room, not all staffs could get inside," she added,
looking disappointed.
Theodora also revealed that media visit this year
was a giant progress in comparison to the previous
year’s visit to a different media. "At that time, we
were just invited for a short tour but now we got
the knowledge of what was really happening in
Transcorp. We can know further
about Indonesian Television indus-
try not just from the Public Rela-
tions’ point of view," Theodora
said. Theodora and her friends
hoped that the upcoming visits
would give better experience than
the previous media visits.

To celebrate the Earth Hour 2012,
Green Planet Supporters (GPS) con-
ducted 4 events similar to last year’s
events, such as Seminar, Goes to
School, Campaign and Celebration.
Actually, the Earth Hour day is cele-
brated on March 31, but because all
PresUnivers were having a holiday
on that day so the committee of the
Earth Hour decided to celebrate it on
April 19 in our dormitory. The
theme for this year’s event is “One
Hour for Better Future, Priceless” in
which we will ask everyone in the
campus to turn off the electricity for
one hour to show their care for this
planet. And they do not have to pay
a singleamount of money to be part
of it. Also there will be so many
interesting activities and
performances performed by
Muscom, Saman, PU Idol and others
The seminar on Earth Hour was held
on Friday, March the 2nd. This year
the committee invited WWF and
Earth Hour Indonesia as the speak-
ers. WWF was represented by Lid-
wina Marcella, who was an activist
volunteer in WWF, Vice Chairman
In Earth Hour Indonesia, and Chair-
man in KOPHI. Meanwhile,
the Earth Hour Indonesia was represented
by Fahmi Ramadhan who was the Chair-
man in Earth Hour Indonesia and Vice
Chairman in KOPHI. The comittee also
invited President junior high school as the
participants. The event was opened by the
Jaenong performance. Continued with the
speech from GPS Advisor, Mr. John Mew-
burn, and a speech from seminar’s PM,
Mira Meutia Utami Galy. During the talk
show, Fahmi talked about earth hour
events and earth hour organization itself,
whereas Lidwina talked about people’s
participation in Earth Hour. They said
when people came into this seminar they
had already been signed up to Earth Hour
World Organization to count the number
of people who supported Earth Hour in
Indonesia. After the talk show finished,
there were some performances from Pre-
sUniv idol, Yoanda Marpaung. The semi-
nar was closed with a QA session followed
by a conclusion of the seminar by the
MC. The other event was Earth
Hour Campaign in the street. I Putu
Feriawan Theja, the Project Manager, and
his team comprising 20 students did cam-
paign for 2 days. On Friday, the 24th of
February 2012, they came to Sentral Gro-
sir Cikarang (SGC) to socialize the
Earth Hour with the visitors and also
some monger. They wore human ban-
ners and played a puppet show. They
also did the similar activities the next
day; however, on the second day, the
activities were conducted in the morning
around PresUniv area and in the after-
noon at Lippo Cikarang.
During PresUniv Goes to School event,
the committee went to eight schools
around Cikarang, namely President Sen-
ior and Junior High Schools, Penabur
Elementary School, Al-azhar Elementary
School, SMA Negeri 2
Cikarang, Penabur Junior High
School, SMP Negeri 4 Cikarang,
and SMA Negeri 1 Cikarang. In the
schools, we were socializing about Earth
Hour, showing some videos, playing
some games like komunikata,
writing romantic sentences which were
related to Earth Hour or global
warming and also singing a song. (GPS)

One interesting thing to note was this small
timer device which emitted light and beep-
ing sound when our orders were ready. Oh,
did I mention about the snow? Yup, it was
snowy back in Seoul – crazy weather!
The presentation in front of the judging
committee went smoothly. Prof. Banyu and
Prof. Kang were high spirited during the
presentation. To be noted, President Uni-
versity and Silla University made it the
final round along with 5 other universi-
ties. There were a total of 40 universities
from Asia and Africa participated in the
project.

Just recently, 23 March 2012, Presi-
dent University sent two of its bril-
liant lecturers to Seoul to fulfill the
invitation from Silla University,
Busan-Korea, to jointly promote Offi-
cial Development Assistance (ODA)
project in front of the judging com-
mittee of Korean Education Develop-
ment Institution (KEDI). The ODA
project is aimed to improve the Facul-
ty of Business and International Rela-
tions of President University and to
help the children from underprivi-
leged families in Cikarang. If the pro-
ject is successful, Korean Govern-
ment will support the University for
four years. The two lecturers who
were sent to Korea were A.A. Banyu
Perwita, lecturer in International Re-
lations, and Jhanghiz Syahrivar, lec-
turer in Management (Marketing).
Below is their exclusive report:
Prof. Banyu and I (Jhanghiz) departed
from Indonesia on 23 March 2012 at
11.30 PM and we arrived the next
morning in Incheon International
International Airport, Seoul, at
8.30, a 6 hour-flight using
Garuda Indonesia! Our first
impression about the airport:
magnificent beyond words! It
was supposed to be spring in
March but we had been informed
by the locals that it was 3 degrees
Celsius – very cold! I need to wear a pair
of gloves and a sweater.
From Incheon International Airport, we
had to depart to Gimpo International
Airport to meet Prof. Kyung Tae Kang
from Silla University. It took 30 minutes
using an airport bus from Incheon to
Gimpo and it cost 5,000 Korean Won
per person. We hooked up with Prof.
Kang at 10.30 AM and we went directly
to the presentation place using a taxi.
Three interesting things about Korean’s
cars: the wheel was on the left side as
opposed to Indonesian cars, the cars
equipped with both AC and heather, and
to top it off, they were fueled with LNG
(Liquefied Natural Gas) instead of gaso-
line! One of the most important ad-
vantages of natural gas is that its ex-
tremely clean burning when used in in-
ternal combustion engines hence it is
environmentally sound and safe.
Our presentation was carried out in some
hotel in Seoul 2.00 PM; however, we
arrived one hour earlier, just in time for
lunch and a cup of coffee. The restaurant
where we had our lunch was said to be
visited by many celebrities, including
Park Min Young :) We had our coffee in
“ H e a u n d a e ”
(tsunami) movie was filmed –
Busan was very popular as a
place for movie industries and a
place where the annual film festi-
val in Korea was held, Shinsegae
– the world largest mall based on
Guinness record where all the
expensive and branded stuffs
were sold, and lastly, the shop-
ping paradise for “poor” (LoL)
tourists like us, Nongpodong.
There was one interesting thing
when we had meals in some food
courts and coffee shops in Korea:
after finishing your meals, you
had to clean up your own trashes
and returned the tray, along with
the plates, back to the food coun-
ter. It was one of amazing Kore-
an ethics! So never leave your
trashes on the table after you
finish your meals.
At 7.00 PM on the same day,
Prof. Banyu and I were brought
to, again, an expensive restau-
rant claimed as the official res-
taurant .
There was a hole beneath the dining
table so could still sit as if you sit in a
regular chair. They designed it that way
so that the customers would feel warm.
After we finished our dinner, we went
to the guest house of Silla University
located just 10 minutes from the restau-
rant. The guest “house” resembled that
of an apartment, cozy and spacious. Our
room alone was that of a small indoor
soccer field – no exaggerating here –
equipped with heather, a 60” plasma
TV, and Wi-Fi. Within the room, there
were three small rooms, two bathrooms
(for man and woman), and one living
room. No kitchen or place to cook be-
cause there was a canteen on the ground
floor. One interesting to note, the dormi-
tory in Silla University was co-ed mean-
ing male and female students may occu-
py one building.
The next morning, 25 March 2012,
Prof. Kang was so kind as to take
us on a tour around Busan. During
our short tour in Busan, we man-
aged to visit Beomeosa temple on
the hill, a beach where the famous
Page 21 P R E S U N I V
Provided that both universities passed
the final round, President University and
Silla University would be supported by
Korean Government financially. After
finishing the presentation, we headed to
Seoul Train Station located in the cen-
tral of Seoul. We planed to visit Silla
University in Busan, the second largest
city in South Korea, on the same day
using a train. It took us 3 hours to reach
Busan, enough to see some beautiful
scenery along the way.
We finally arrived in Busan’s train
station at 7.30 PM. We were wel-
comed and escorted by Mr. Yoom
Im-Seog, a graduate of Silla Uni-
versity, who took us to a nice – I
would also say “expensive – sea-
food restaurant for dinner. Most of
expensive dining restaurants in
Busan were quite unique in a
sense that you would hardly found
a regular chair with four two to
four legs. Instead, they designed
the chairs resembling a tatami in
Japanese restaurant, except that

President University’s Lecturers invited to Korea
for the delegations of Asia-Pacific Eco-
nomic Cooperation (APEC). In the res-
taurant, we met some professors from
Silla University and also Mr. Tae-Hak
Park, Ph.D, the Head of Industrial &
Academic Collaboration Foundation.
Mr. Tae was in charge of getting finan-
cial supports, funds and donations for
Silla University so that the University
could grow rapidly.
On 26 March 2012, early in the morn-
ing, we returned to Seoul by taking a
domestic flight from Gimhae Interna-
tional Airport, Busan. We arrived at
Incheon International Airport just in
time to take a direct flight to Jakarta at
10.30 AM.
All in all, it has been a wonderful trip to
Korea. Beautiful country, beautiful cul-
ture, and Yeputta (beautiful) Korean
women made us feel that at least we had
to spend two more days in Korea, per-
haps to attend 2012 Seoul Nuclear Secu-
rity Summit on March 26-27, 2012.

Unlike most of the other nonfoolish holidays, the history of April Fool's Day, some-
times called All Fool's Day, is not totally clear. It is not like Halloween, where despite
an interesting history, most people just put on Halloween costumes, get candy, and
leave it at that. There really wasn't a "first April Fool's Day" that can be pinpointed on
the calendar. Some believe it sort of evolved simultaneously in several cultures at the
same time, from celebrations involving the first day of spring.
The closest point in time that can be identified as the beginning of this tradition was in
1582, in France. Prior to that year, the new year was celebrated for eight days, begin-
ning on March 25. The celebration culminated on April 1. With the reform of the calen-
dar under Charles IX, the Gregorian Calendar was introduced, and New Year's Day was
moved to January 1.
In Scotland, for example, April
Fool's Day is actually celebrated for two days. The second day is devoted to
pranks involving the posterior region of the body. It is called Taily Day. The
origin of the "kick me" sign can be traced to this observance.
In France and several other European countries, April 1 is often referred to as
April Fish. The prank is to stick a paper fish on the back of another person
without being noticed.
Mexico's counterpart of April Fool's Day is actually observed on December 28.
Originally, the day was a sad remembrance of the slaughter of the innocent
children by King Herod. It eventually evolved into a lighter commemoration
involving pranks and trickery.
Practical jokes are a common practice on April Fool's Day. Sometimes, elabo-
rate practical jokes are played on friends or relatives that last the entire day.
The news media even gets involved. For instance, a British short film once
shown on April Fool's Day was a fairly detailed documentary about "spaghetti
farmers" and how they harvest their crop from the spaghetti trees.
April Fool's Day is a "for-fun-only" observance. Nobody is expected to buy
gifts or to take their "significant other" out to eat in a fancy restaurant. Nobody
gets off work or school. It's simply a fun little holiday, but a holiday on which
one must remain forever vigilant, for he may be the next April Fool!
However, communications being
what they were in the days when
news traveled by foot, many people
did not receive the news for several
years. Others, the more obstinate
crowd, refused to accept the new
calendar and continued to celebrate
the new year on April 1. These
backward folk were labeled as
"fools" by the general populace.
They were subject to some ridicule,
and were often sent on "fools er-
rands" or were made the butt of oth-
er practical jokes.
Pranks performed on April Fool's
Day range from the simple, (such as
saying, "Your shoe's untied, or I
accidentally stepped on your glass-
es!), to the elaborate. Setting a
roommate's alarm clock back an
hour is a common gag. Whatever the prank,
the trickster usually ends it by yelling to his
victim, "April Fool!"
This harassment evolved, over time, into a
tradition of prank-playing on the first day of
April. The tradition eventually spread to
England and Scotland in the eighteenth cen-
tury. It was later introduced to the American
colonies of both the English and French.
April Fool's Day thus developed into an
international fun fest, so to speak, with dif-
ferent nationalities specializing in their own
brand of humor at the expense of their
friends and families.

Too many of us live like goldfish, swimming in the same orbit day in and day out feeling un-
inspired, tired, bored and sometimes worse. Life is much too precious to waste that way.
Every person has a unique purpose in life. I implore you not to waste your days berating
yourself for what you don't know and don't do well. Instead, discover your strengths, pas-
sions, purpose and build your life on those.
Here are 10 ideas about living a meaningful life, as I understand them. Embracing even a
few of these will help you begin the exciting journey of self discovery.
* We are all here for a purpose. Your being here makes a difference. Your purpose may be
obscure to you and a challenge to discover. Start now. There are many resources, coaches
and books to help you with this endeavor.
* The secret to fulfillment is self knowledge. Start the exciting journey of discovery.
* The second part of the secret to fulfillment is to apply your self knowledge to what you do
and how you live. The more you know, the more you can actively pursue your true purpose.
* Don't waste time lamenting what you don't do well. Concentrate on your strengths. Those
reflect who you are. Leave the other things to people who do them well.
* Build on your strengths. Do more of them and give yourself recognition for doing the
things you do well.
* Pay attention to the small details that you enjoy in your everyday life. Do more of them.
* Pay attention to the small details you don't enjoy. Find ways (such as delegation) to elim-
inate as many of them as possible.
* Keep a journal and put particular emphasis on the things about yourself and events in
your life for which you are grateful.
* Make an effort to release the negative aspects of your past. Try not be imprisoned by your
past. Do not define yourself by your past.
* Jumpstart your self-esteem by giving back to the community. Volunteer in a meaningful
way that suits who you are and your interests.
Enjoy the journey. You will get to know and like yourself in a whole new way. Work with a
friend, hire a coach, and use the resources out there, to help you with objectivity. Have
someone point out the good things about you that you have a tendency to overlook. As soon
as you stop doing what you hate and start doing what you love, you may find your life more
meaningful and fulfilling.
