Prep Night
Last night saw all our Prep students return to school at 5:00 pm to take
part in the annual Prep Night. The children came dressed as their
favourite character and each class rotated through a number of activities.
In between the activity rotations, the children had a simply delicious
dinner, supplied by their parents. What a spread! A huge thank-you must
go to the parents who ensured their children had a great night by
supplying them with scrumptious food to share as well as helping them
dress for the occasion. Thank-you also to the Junior Department
teachers who always make this such a special night for our Prep
students. Even when they get to Year 6 many of the students can still
remember what character they dressed as for their Prep Night – a great
testament to the strong memories this will create.
Michael’s Supa IGA
Don’t forget about Michael’s Supa IGA Comunity Rewards Program. This
is one way that every family can financially contribute to our school
without making a formal donation. Did you know that just by shopping at
Michael’s Supa IGA, if your customer tag is linked to KPS, our school
receives a donation proportional to the amount spent? What a simple
way to contribute to our school. Last year Michael’s Supa IGA donated
$3,525 to our school just because of families having a customer tag
linked to our school!! Thank you to all those who regularly support our
school in this way. If you don’t have a customer tag, application forms
are available either at our school Office or Michael’s Supa IGA.
Staffing
Over the next few weeks, some of our staff will taking some well-earned
Long Service Leave. Commencing next Monday 10th August, Lynne Dowel
will be on leave for 3 weeks with one of our regular relief teachers Robyn
Hodgson taking over in LD:3. Jacqui Rotthier will also begin a longer period
of leave that will see her touring parts of Europe for the rest of this term! On
days when Jacqui is due to teach in S-R:1, her place will be taken by Kit
Cathie. We hope both Jacqui and Lynne enjoy their well-earned breaks.
While on staff issues, we would like to congratulate 2 of our staff who are
celebrating milestone birthdays. On behalf of our entire school community, I
would to congratulate Lynne Dowel and our Principal Nathan Pirouet on
their special birthdays and hope they have a wonderful time with family and
friends celebrating the big occasions.

Traffic Signage Changes in Wrench’s Lane
In consultation with the South Gippsland Shire Council, there are now new line markings and signage in Wrench’s Lane. These improvements are aimed at ensuring the safety of our school community. Please note the new No Parking areas and the No Standing areas at the pull-in area behind the Senior Building in Wrench’s Lane. The No Parking area allows parents to stop for 3 minutes to drop off their children. It does not allow for parents to be more than 3 metres from their car. The No Standing area does not allow for stopping. We hope that if parents abide by the new drop off and pick up regulations and traffic flow is improved then it will not be necessary for parents to want to park illegally in the No Standing area. We also acknowledge that it is difficult for parents at these busy times. We will continue to explore ways of improving traffic safety. Thank you to all of the parents that are patient and tolerant during the busy drop off and pick up times. With the new restrictions in place, please remember that there are other spaces around the school that may be useful pick-up and drop-off points. These include: Princes Street at the back of the school In the marked bays outside the Court House and Police Station in Bridge Street The IGA car park on Kardella Road The car park between the Korumburra Hotel car park and the furniture shops across the road from school. Parents are also reminded that Wrench’s Lane outside the Year 3-4 building is not an area to pull up and wait for your child at the end of the school day. It would be appreciated if those parents who use Wrench’s Lane (down towards the highway) keep moving and don’t stop, thus ensuring a smooth flow of traffic and a quick exit from the school surrounds.
(Continued from page 1) Kids Matter
On Tuesday afternoon, Nigel Kilpatrick, Lynne Dowel and I attended
the network Kids Matter Cluster Meeting held in Leongatha. Nigel did
a presentation to the various schools in attendance about our
school’s journey with Kids Matter. It gave those present a great
insight into the big strides our school has taken in the time we have
been a ‘Kids Matter’ school supporting the health and wellbeing of all
the members of our school community. Thanks Nigel for showcasing
our school so well!
Choir Competes at Yarram Eisteddfod
Today, our Choir travelled to Yarram with Choir Leader Gabi
Mathews to compete in the annual Yarram Eisteddfod. They have
been practising a number of times per week and will no doubt
continue our school’s great results at the eisteddfod. We look
forward to hearing how they performed at our Friday morning
Assembly. Thank you to Di Wilshaw and the many parents who
accompanied the children to Yarram to support them with a big thank
-you to the Choir’s leader Mrs Gabi Mathews for her teaching,
support and encouragement of the children.
Staff Professional Development
Tonight, the staff are again involved in their fortnightly professional
development after-school session. Tonight’s session being run by
our ICT Co-ordinator Dan Wells, will focus on our Semester 2 reports
which this time are being developed through our Compass Student
Management system. While our Semester 2 reports will still be
provided to families in a hard-copy, parents may see some minor
differences in the content and presentation of the report. We will be
working on the new reporting format in the coming months but want
to inform parents that the new format will still provide valuable
information about their child’s progress as well as the development
of their social and emotional wellbeing, in line with our new school
values. Thank you to Dan for leading the staff through this process.
PSG Meetings
Over the next 2 weeks, we will be holding our Term 3 meetings for
students who are part of the Program for Students with Disabilities,
Out of Home Care program and those with Koorie background.
These meetings see parents meet with their child’s class teacher
and ES staff to review their child’s progress as well as consider
goals for their child for the next term. These meetings are always a
great celebration of the progress of each child.
Student Led Portfolio Presentations in RC:2
Thank you to the many parents who took the opportunity to visit
Robyn Cutler’s Year 2 class for their children’s Portfolio Presentation
on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday after school this week. RC:2’s
Portfolio Presentations were held this week as Robyn didn’t return to
school till last week from her period of Long Service Leave.

Principal’s Report cont….
PLEASE!!!! Can you spare just 1 hour to help 1 student at KPS
each week?
Sadly, we have had no parents contact us about being a LAP
Volunteer and spending just 1 hour per week supporting a student at
our school. LAP is a program designed to improve self-esteem, self-
confidence and a sense of achievement in students with particular
needs. Volunteers from the community work with students on a one-
to-one basis on activities determined by the student and the
volunteer together. Volunteers must have a Working with Children
Card and be able to be matched appropriately with our students but
no special skills are required – just a desire to be a positive
influence on a young person’s life. If you would like to find out more
about becoming a volunteer, please contact me at school.
Our National Anthem
Each Monday, our school community joins together to sing our
National Anthem as a part of our School Assembly. At this Monday’s
Assembly, we are going to trial having the words for the children and
parents to follow on the whiteboard. The flags will also be placed on
the long wall beside the basketball court. We hope this will enable
our school community to more easily sing all of our National
Anthem.
Spot Mr Gray’s Spelling Mistake
Did you spot the mistake in my last report. Sophie McKenzie did!
Sophie won a treat from the canteen for her efforts! Good luck
spotting my very easy mistake in this report. As usual, there will be a
prize for those students who can identify the deliberate error!
Parent Opinion Survey
At this time each year, approximately 60 families are randomly
selected to take part in a survey of parents’ opinions on a range of
issues relating to our school. The families will very soon receive a
pack of information, which we ask them to read and then respond to
with their opinions and comments. The survey provides us with
valuable feedback on our strengths as well as areas for
improvement. This survey is a really important part of our annual
evaluation of school performance and I urge all families who have
been randomly selected to please participate and complete the
survey. We need to get as many responses as possible to make the
survey results meaningful.
All the families who return their surveys completed, will go into a
draw for a voucher to the Rainbow Palace Restaurant to the value of
$50. There will also be a small treat for any students who return the
sealed envelope to the Office.
Last year the overall response from our selected parents improved
and this year we are hoping to continue to improve the numbers of
surveys returned to school. Note that this survey is confidential.
Envelopes are not opened at school but are sent centrally to the
company who process the information on behalf of the Department
of Education and Training.

Junior Department News
For the past few weeks, the Year One students have been learning about light. After experimenting with different light sources and
discovering the different things light can do, students wrote facts about light. Here is a snippet of some of their writing:
We can discover with light. People can see with lights. There are lots of different lights in the world. There are lights on cars, cameras, phones
and iPads too. Some things reflect light like the moon and the stars. They reflect the light from the sun. It looks like the moon and stars are
shining but they don’t.
By Alex O’Neill
Light helps us to see. Light is the best because it runs on electricity. Light is the opposite of dark. If we didn’t have light we couldn’t see. If we
couldn’t see we would bash and crash into things.
By Ben Woodberry
Light comes from the sun. We need light to see. Light can come from electric lights, torches and fire. Light and fire helps people see in the
dark. Light can go through transparent stuff like counters. Light can reflect on things. Some things block light and make shadows.
By Maia Enbom
Last night was our eagerly awaited ‘Prep Night’. It was, as always, a huge success! Students came dressed in their favourite dress up, enjoyed
games, a sing a long and ate lots and lots of party food! Thank you parents once again for your support with the evening.

Year 6
It’s been a busy couple of weeks in the Year 6 area! The students have been researching a threatened native Australian species and have
been asked to create a presentation for their peers.
In Mathematics, we have been focussing and honing our skills on analogue, digital, 24 hour, and elapsed time. Within our Maths groups, our
activities have catered for various levels of understanding and the tasks have related to real life situations (i.e. understanding of
timetables).
Next week, the students will be visited by Linda Jennings and Brock Churchill from Korumburra Secondary College to begin the transition into
Secondary College. In addition the Young Ambassadors program will be kicked off next week for student leaders with a visit from Miss Emma
Fellowes-Cooke, the coordinator of the program. This will be a 1 hour visit to establish what our students will be expected to research. Those
students involved will receive further information next week at that meeting.
Year 5
The Year 5’s have had a busy few weeks and have started looking at a new topic in Science, focussing on ‘Chemical Sciences’. Let’s hope
the roof stays on the building and there’s no smoke coming out the windows! The Year 5’s have also started exploring ‘Explanation Texts’ in
Literacy and have worked hard this week completing a 40 minute timed write.
