Preface
This book is designed to provide the practicing interventionalist with acomprehensive list of procedural reports that cover the vast majority of thecurrently performed interventional procedures outside the cardiac system, with up-to-date explanatory notes, synopsis of the indications, and potentialcomplications in an organized and practical format that follows thevarious-body systems and progresses from the simple image-guided fineneedle aspiration to the most complex procedures, incorporating at the sametime the current societal guidelines. The book is divided for the ease ofreference into three main parts: nonvascular, vascular, and neurovascularinterventional procedures. This information is not currently available in anysingle publication.
The resident, the fellow, as well as the staff member will benefit from thisunique, quickly accessible, detailed, and user-friendly resource for the doc-umentation of image-guided interventional procedures that will facilitate theirtasks, improve the standard of documentation, and reduce mistakes. Theentries are vetted by recognized experts in the field of image-guidedintervention.
There has been an exponential increase in the number and variety ofimage-guided interventions over the last decades, with increasing complexityin the vascular and nonvascular domains. Such wide variety and complexitycomes with added obligations on the interventional team to ensure appro-priate patient care. The interventional procedure report must be written in atimely manner and is a valuable and essential part of the patient’s medicalrecord. It should document the management decision process, including theindications and contraindications as well as the details of the procedure itselfand post-procedural care. By doing so, communication with all membersof the healthcare team is assured and clarity of the treatment pathway isdetailed. Any subsequent management steps could then be decided in thelight of the full record. In addition, the record of the procedure ensuresappropriate reimbursement and reduces the possibility of any medico-legalissues resulting from the ambiguity in documentation.
This book is therefore a must-have for residents and fellows undergoingtraining and all specialists in image-guided intervention.
It is with a great deal of pride that we complete the first edition of thisuseful reference in the hope that it will encourage future generations of
vii
interventionalists to develop mutually productive relationships with othercare providers.
We wish to acknowledge with sincere thanks the contribution of allauthors and reviewers. Their efforts have greatly inspired us and strengthenedour enthusiasm for bringing this edition to fruition.
