group project “color”For our first asignment we were

given partners, mine was Michelle.

We then an abstract topic, which

we decided to do color. With our

topic chosen we decided to use

the concept of color to create anti-

racsim advertisments. We spilt the

the asignment and ended up with

two campaigns, one that was “Stop

Coloring” a campaign and another

that was the “Stop Hiding” campaign,

which I was more invested in, this

campaign was about racism in Africa

and showing it to the western world.

With the first iterations I experimented with different logo identities and slogans for the campaign. I also did more research, as shown in the ad above to try and pin point a more accurate target audience and stance I want-ed to take on the issue. This is also where the idea to start the African campaign stemmed from.

Symbolics play a vital role in society, even more so today where we are bombarded by them daily. I wanted to appropriate some well known symbols and reestablish them with new meaning in an attempt to question the viewer, or to add emphasis as many symbols have a duty in society and that “duty” can be exploited to derive a more powerful meaning through ads.

I then went on to investigate how I could use symbols to relate to cultre and diversity. Mass media and popular culture play such a large roll in society that images today are loaded with alternate meanings. I tried to use both humor and shock to get the message across, as shown in the examples on the right and following slides. I also took into consideration areas that a public of great cultural diversity may come together and interact, this is where the idea for the advertisments using the bus system as the medium came into play. (examples of these are shown further down).

These iterations focused more on shock value, and question societies belief/stereotypes. For example the image at the bottom is of a sign outside a coffee shop that says “no whites beyond this point”. This is reference to an occurrence that happened in Africa, but also to grab the attention of the viewer. To this point of the iterations my ideas have surpassed the image making, so I could now take the concept and reapply it to a more suiting design.

These ads were effectivly inspired by all the research and image making that I went through above. I know had an idea of a route to follow with the transport ideas, and the final results are shown at the end with the rest of the final works from “coloring”.

This I feel was my favorite concept, as I have always felt strongly against the notion of having to declare your race when applying to schools. I wanted to change the check boxes to colors that have different meanings, more empowering meanings.

It was at this point that I started to delve into the idea of politicizing my designs, to try and hit a nerve within a viewer to start a discussion. Like the Hejaab, which is a stencil on a mirror, and reflects your eyes making it appear as if you were wearing it. The concept behind these installations was to encourage debate and discussion amongst people.

I went on to experiment on a more abstract level, and was fascinated by the idea of color and pattern. This experimentation lead to the realization of the design aesthetic and main idea behind my “Stop Hiding” campaign. I was also interested in the semiotics of the images.

Seeing that tesilations worked well with the campaign I came up with the idea of using gruseum images of racially motiviated murders in South Africa, giving me the result of an image that both looked appealing and had a flare of Africa in it. The idea was to draw the viewer in with the beautiful image and only under close inspection would they notice the “truth” of the image.

I experimented with stylizing the photographs but felt that the impact was greatest using a clear image, as shown on the left. I now had to come up with a way to integrate these designs either into society or into print ad ideas. Much of the beginning of my process is about locating the cause, experimenting with image making and then once I have a solid idea taking it and thinking how to incorporate it.

The following are examples of the intricate patterns incorporated into other designs, to create These ideas were used as print cam-paigns and I started to think about how to integrate the print cam-paigns with the interactive designs. I felt that QR codes would be the best solution for this.

If you scanned the QR code it would take you to a sight, and depending on the poster, give you information, or like the example shown above serve as an interactive tool to show the magnitude of the murders that have taken place.

Here I started to reserch public spaces and thoughts on how to integrate patterns into them. I wanted the ads to stand out more as intruging art works rather than an AD. That is why I chose to incorporate my design next to a piece created by OBEY. I feel that regonition of artists can be used to bring attention to more important topics.

To stay with the theme of hand done, I hand animated text coming out of the trumpet of one of Basquiats paintings.

I also hand animated this bananna pealing, as Basquiat did a lot of work with Warhol and I felt this would be a nice tie.
