- Computer Basics Lightning Review What you need to know: Basic
parts of a computer Bits, Bytes, and Binary Understand the
difference between: hardware and software operating system and
applications LAN and WAN Internet and World Wide Web
- Slide 4
- Basic parts of a computer Microprocessor / Central Processing
Unit (CPU) The Brain of a computer Interprets and Executes Program
Instructions Memory / Random Access Memory (RAM) Unlike permanent
storage its erased when the PC is turned off Faster than hard
drives and other permanent storage Used to store applications and
data currently in use or anticipated to be used soon Think of RAM
and HD as a desk
- Slide 5
- Basic parts of a computer Hard Drives and other Permanent
Storage Is retained even when a PC is turned off Typically is the
largest storage place for applications, data, and files on a PC Is
slower than RAM Motherboard Consider it like the chassis or frame
of an automobile, it is what everything else bolts on to Provides
room for expansion with additional cards
- Slide 6
- Basic parts of a computer Input Devices Keyboards and mice but
also consider devices like scanners, bar code readers, microphones
as input as well Output Devices Printers, Screens, etc.
- Slide 7
- Bits, Bytes, and Binary Computers talk in series of on/off
electric pulses We have a hard time visualizing electrical pulses
we think in terms of 1s and 0s Bit = single binary number (1 or 0)
Byte = combination of eight bits Byte can also be thought of as one
character Ex. 01000001 == A
- Slide 8
- Bits, Bytes, and Binary Remember 1 byte = 1 character 1,000
characters == kilobyte 1,000,000 characters == megabyte
1,000,000,000 characters == gigabyte
- Slide 9
- Hardware Versus Software, etc. Hardware versus Software If you
can touch it, its probably hardware
- Slide 10
- Operating System vs. Applications Operating System versus
Applications Operating System controls execution of all
applications Application software sits on top of and is managed by
the Operating System Only one operating system can be used at any
given time while many applications can run on top of the operating
system
- Slide 11
- WAN versus LAN, etc. Difference between a Wide Area Network
(WAN) and a Local Area Network (LAN)? LAN == a group of
computers/devices connected together, typically in the same
building or on the same campus/grounds WAN == two or more LANs
connected together and not restricted by a geographical location.
WAN could connect two LANs which are thousands of miles apart.
- Slide 12
- Internet Versus World Wide Web (WWW) Internet A network built
by the govt to survive a nuclear attack A network of networks which
doesnt rely on some central resource and can survive if some
portions of the network become unavailable
- Slide 13
- Internet Versus World Wide Web (WWW) WWW Sits on top of the
Internet and uses everything that is good about the Internet
(redundancy, ease of access, etc.) Uses visual pages and browsers
to display information to client PCs Original intent was to display
research papers in an easy fashion so Hypertext (HTML) was
created
- Slide 14
- Computer Basics Review Pull out a blank piece of paper. Put
down your name. Put down the number 1 through 6. Place the answer
you feel is correct next to the number. 60 seconds per slide!

- Shortcuts Shortcuts are key combinations clicked and held on
the keyboard to perform an operation otherwise typically done with
the mouse. Usually use a special key as part of the shortcut, for
example the ALT, CTRL, or TAB keys. CTRL == Control ALT == Alt TAB
== Tab
