• In urban areas, bacteriologicalcontamination related to gerdistrict sanitation is high;

• In the rural areas, waste fromthe aimag centers and soums isthe main cause of soil pollution

Comparison of soil quality MNS 5850: 2008:

The soil of Baganuur, Bagakhangai, Bayanzurkh, Sukhbaatar,Songinokhairkhan, Chingeltei, Khan-Uul and Nalaikh districtshas no heavy metals such as cadmium, lead, mercury, zinc,copper, cobalt, and strontium. However, mercury, chromium,zinc, and strontium in the soil have increased in previousyears.

According to the results of the heavy metals monitoring of soilquality in Bayan-Ulgii, Dornogovi, Dornod, Dundgovi,Uvurkhangai, Umnugovi, Sukhbaatar and Khentii aimags, it isnormalized to exceed the MNS 5850: 2008 standard.

Total area 10.9 thousand hectares

Waste - 143,882.10 м3/haSoil disturbance - 20,077.30 м3

A soil pollution assessment survey was conducted at 18 sites.

The main pollutants are metal products such as petroleum, lead, zinc and chromium.

Bayan nexus point: cadmium content was4.6 mg/kg, lead content was 680.5mg/kg, or 580.5 mg/kg from themaximum permissible level andreached toxic levels.

At this point zinc concentration was2356 mg/kg or 7.8 times higher than thepermissible level.

Priority sites with further strategic importance:

• Dornogobi, Sainshand;

• Gobi-sumbe, Choir;• Ulaanbaatar city,

Nalaikh;• Ulaanbaatar city,

Baganuur;• Dornod,

Choibalsan.

Important sites with potential risks to the environment and public health:

• Gobi-Sumber, Bayantal;• Gobi-Sumber,Shiveegobi;

• Ulaanbaatar city,Bagakhangai;

• Darkhan-Uul, Salkhit;• Darkhan-Uul, Erkhet;• Dundgobi, Mandalgobi;• Dornod. Gurvanzagal

Sites requiring long-term monitoring for contamination management:

• Dornogobi, Dalanjargalan;

• Uvurkhangai,Arvaikheer;

• Bulgan, Ulaan Orkhon;• Khentii, Undurkhaan;• Bayankhongor, Ulziit;• Khovd, Darvi;• Khuvsgul, Murun;• Tuv, Sergelen;• Darkhan-Uul, Darkhantown.

The purpose of the project is to compare the internationalexperience of identifying, classifying and evaluatingcontaminated sites and the purpose of extending thecooperation of Military and Civilian Organizations indetermining ways to reduce soil and groundwater pollution inthe land used for Former Military Sites.

A review of the international practices in identification, ranking andassessments of contaminated sites

• Increase and habit dialogue on reduction and rehabilitation of pollution andland resort among military and civilian organizations

• Develop military and civil organizations jointly with pollution managementplans for former military sites and carry out a detailed survey of prioritylocations

• Enhance cooperation between military and civilian organizations to identifyand rehabilitate soil and groundwater pollution in areas used for formermilitary sites
