What is a protégé?A protégé is someone who desires to master their craf through [the] mentorship [of another ].
Tey know they can’t do it on their own, and they don’t want to do it on their own.
Tere are countless protégés who believe that what they were born to do is to help
shape the world or Christ.
But how do all these protégés master their craf and accelerate their development?
I ound mysel gripped by that question.
As I reflect on the last 15 years o my own development process,
personal investment was key.

In effort to improve your sel-awareness, here’s how I suggest that you assess yoursel.
Character Formation – Tere are our deadly sins o emerging leaders. Assess which o the our need the most attention and draw a circlearound that sin. Be prepared to discuss with the team.
Relational Leadership – Tere are three critical tensions in relational leadership. Look at each spectrum and assess where you see yourselby placing an X. Be prepared to discuss with the team.
Communication – When communicating with others (whether in ront o a group or in one on one conversations) assess how well you’redoing in these three dimensions o communication:
1. How much effort do you give to thinking about the words you use and how your language relates to who you are talking to?2. How vulnerable and authentic are you in how you communicate with others?
3. How well do you speak from your heart not just your head?
(Rate yourself – 0 = worst, 10 = best)
Entrepreneurial Leadership – Look at the three primary characteristics o kingdom entrepreneurs. Circle which ones you (and yourteam) do pretty well at and which ones you (and your team) find more challenging and why?
Missional Focus – Look at the list o questions about living with a missional. Place an X by one or two o the questions you would like todiscuss with your team.

It’s possible that I could’ve grown, even achieved a decent level o competency, without mentors investing in me
over the years. But what I know or sure is that without them I would not be the man I need to be, to do what I do.
It was out o this desire to bring the best in development to younger leaders that we designed a customized process
almost a decade ago that we called “Te Protégé Program.”
A protégé is someone like you – someone who longs to increase their impact, take their leadership to the next level,
someone who dreams o a better uture or their communities, who is struggling to figure out who they are and
where they fit into the complex world o spiritual leadership. Tey long for transformation in themselves
and in the world around them.
Unortunately, most developing leaders don’t have access to something like the Protégé Program. Tat’s why
my wie Cheri and I wrote the book, Protégé—as a way to help young ministry leaders co-design their own protégé
journey as well as gain insight into developing other protégés.
In essence, we want to introduce you to the DNA o the Protégé Program through this visual experience, and then
invite you to learn more through our book, Protégé: Developing Your Next Generation of Church Leaders.

Four Deadly Sins of Emerging Leaders
Character is doing the right thing simply because it is the right thing to do, no matter the cost. Tat is the essence o true
heroism, and the defining mark o a Christ-centered leader. Unortunately, character is not required to be an effective leader.On the other hand, character is what makes a leader worth ollowing—and it’s what gives people a compelling lie to ollow.
Te Sin of Imitation: Envy Envy is not only a deadly sin, but probably one o the most uncomortable sins, especially or emerging leaders as they
strive to distinguish themselves rom everyone else. And sometimes it’s immensely difficult to distinguish the difference
rom personal development and imitation development. Te pathway toward overcoming the sin o imitation involves the
pursuit o living an original lie, a pursuit all can attain, one we were in act created to attain.
Te Sin of Performance: Self-RelianceEvery leader aces the challenge to produce or perorm. Although this ambitious pursuit and intentional ocus isn’t
inherently wrong, I’m convinced that what ought to motivate us and what actually does motivate us gets all too blurry. Te
mindset o productivity is so pervasive in our culture that it can result in a subtle but critical shif in our approach to how
we view and do ministry leadership and understand what great perormance is really about.

Te Sin of Overconfidence: FoolishnessWhere do we draw the line between healthy confidence and unhealthy overconfidence? Where does the balance lie between
knowing you have specific gifs to offer, and thinking you are better than you are? And how does knowing the difference
actually make a difference?
My experience shows me that ministry leaders don’t always seek the right kind o wisdom, thus maintaining characteristics o
what the Scriptures call, “a ool,” which is where the sin o overconfidence leads us. For the church to continue to make positive
change in the uture, our leadership must be driven by the pursuit o the right kind o wisdom, allowing this wisdom to be our
compass into a better uture.
Te Sin of Entitlement: GreedGreed is a deadly sin because it takes more than it gives. It consumes rather than creates. It is never satisfied. What makes it worse
is that greed is difficult to recognize and then acknowledge within yoursel. As a result o going unchecked, greed begins to ueland pollute our ambitions, the very ones that look good on the outside but wreck havoc in our leadership, marriage, ministry,
and personal lives.
Greed ofen presents itsel in the orm o entitlement, which lives and breathes or one purpose—to consume. It is ugly. And, it
cleverly disguises itsel as ambition, drive, and a healthy dose o assertiveness. Tis is why every spiritual leader must intentionally
pursue the pathway out o greed, one that launches them into a lie o contentment, gratitude, and generosity—admirable
character traits that we long or and have access to through a relationship with Jesus Christ.
We set young leaders up for a fall
if we encourage them to envision what they can do
before they consider the kind of person they should be.

So, what is a kingdom entrepreneur ?
Tere are three primary characteristics that we must learn to develop.
1. Kingdom entrepreneurs embody the spirit, and have developed the skill set, o a true entrepreneur, which
includes cultivating the ability to start new ministries, expand one’s creative thinking process,serving needs that aren’t being met, and fostering an internal risk taking spirit thatcompel them to know how to overcome their fears.
2. Kingdom entrepreneurs harness their efforts to help others live in and experience the kingdom o God now
[and then orever]. Jesus Christ declared that the kingdom has come, but has not yet ully come—what many biblical
scholars call the already-but-not-yet principle. Our role as ambassadors o Christ is to continue to live in and live out the
kingdom o God. We are to learn what it means to ully embody this kingdom way o living, as we strive to usher inrestoration and redemption to all of God’s creation.
3. Kingdom entrepreneurs create new ministry mediums to help nonbelievers experience Christ in a way
they wouldn’t necessarily experience it in a normal church context. I’ve come to call these experiences, pre-churchexperiences. I’m also convinced that an increasing number o people will not be reached through our normal ways o
doing church, which means the tribe o ollowers o Jesus must consider new ways of reaching ourworld (i.e. through learning to establish eective pre-church experiences).
