z 4th of July Thanks z
The HOA Board would like to
thank everyone who gave of their
time, talent, muscles, opinions,
and suggestions to help put on a
great 4th of July Celebration.
Diane Webb did a fantastic job
of chairing the committee for
the Party at the
Pool along with
unending sup-
port of Doris
Johnson and
the 4th of July
Committee.
Ken Latimer
and his crew
gave us a
fabulous
parade with a
very wet finale
orchestrated by
the fire department.
We are so glad to have so many
people in the Parade! Jo Latimer
and her bicycle judging team had
a record number of participants.
Joyce Schnell did the sweetest
job of all at the bake shop. Polly
Frisbee and the “kitchen staff ” did
a great job of helping Doris get
us all fed. We can say without a
doubt that all the gentlemen who
cooked hot dogs and sausage were
HOT STUFF!
The children had so much fun
with basketball,
rubber duckies, a
sweet walk, face
painting, the
bike decorating
contest, and
other activi-
ties.
The bever-
age servers
and snow
cone makers
did their best
to keep us cool.
And we simply cannot forget our
bingo organizers and participants!
It was certainly our great fortune
to enjoy fun times and lovely
prizes due to the generosity of sev-
eral Greenwood Forest Neighbors
and retailers.

4 THE FOREST NEWS July 2016
Women’s Club Greenwood Forest was a great place to celebrate the
4th of July. The activities started with a bike decorat-
ing contest followed by a parade featuring fire trucks,
various decorated floats, trucks, corvettes, antique
cars, and many other groups including the Boy
Scouts.
The enthusiastic group then headed to the Club
House for refreshments, hot dogs, chicken salad crois-
sant sandwiches, and sweets at the Bake Shoppe.
Exciting fun activities included bingo, treat walk,
watermelon eating contest, snow cones, face painting,
kitty pool ducks, and basketball shoot contest.
When all of that concluded, it was time to cool off
in the swimming pool. What a Fun Day it was! A
HUGE thank you to all of those who spent many
months planning for this big day.

Home & Garden Club Everybody loves a parade! What a great way to start
the 4th of July celebration. Benette Schrieber built
“Uncle Sam” from various sized clay flower pots
and painted them in red, white and blue! A very
patriotic creation. Benette and her husband, Allen,
also provided the truck for the Garden Club’s parade
entry. Potted plants were handed out to residents
along the parade route.
A big “Thank You” to all of the members and
spouses who made the decorating move along pretty
quickly. Jim and Doris Hardwick were kind enough
to donate their driveway to the preparations. The
end product was awesome!
Congratulations to the July recipients of the Yard
of the Month Award: Pat and Mitch McLendon at
5326 Havenwoods.
Our next meeting will be September 22nd at the
clubhouse. Social time begins at 9:30 am, the
meeting begins at 10 am.

HURST PARK
While not within the actual confines of Greenwood
Forest, Hurst Park has been a well-received and valu-
able addition to our neighborhood. Its original intent
was as a detention pond to alleviate flooding issues
on the west side of Greenwood, for which it serves its
purpose. More recently, MUD added a walking trail
complete with lights, benches, water fountains, and a
small parking lot for the enjoyment of area residents.
It’s unfortunate that among the many who utilize
and enjoy this area, there are those who continue to
vandalize and destroy signage within the park. These
actions constitute a felony violation of the Texas
Penal Code. The uncaring perpetrator(s) responsible
for thousands of dollars of damage to the park will
face dire consequences, including their arrest and
prosecution. Additionally, there is a real possibility the
park would face permanent closure, which would be
unfortunate for those who use the park respectfully.
It is our sincere hope that this irresponsible criminal
activity will stop so neither of the above will occur.
In addition, for those residents using the gate at
Indian Wells to access the park, please be consider-
ate of the people who live on Indian Wells and in
the surrounding area. It is against the law to block
driveways, mailboxes, and fire hydrants, and doing so
may result in a traffic violation and even your vehicle
being towed.
NEIGHBORHOOD BURGLARIES
We have had several recent burglaries in our subdivi-
sion. The vast majority of these, if not all, have been
daytime burglaries while the occupants were away
for a brief period of time. Entry was made in all but
one instance through rear windows or doors that
were unlocked or not well secured. One house was
accessed through an unlocked window on the second
floor of the residence which was easily accessible due
to a patio cover and outdoor furniture. We ask that
you let this serve as a reminder to secure your home,
including the second floor, when away for even a
brief period of time.
Safety & Security HOME SECURITY INSPECTIONS
Our Precinct 4 Constable’s office offers a free securi-
ty inspection by a certified safety specialist to residents
of the neighborhood, as stated in our contracts. Many
insurance companies offer policy discounts for suc-
cessfully completing this inspection, so homeowners
could see an immediate financial benefit.
To request a Home Security Inspection, visit
the Precinct 4 website at cd4.hctx.net/online_forms.
php?formID=inspection and sign up. You will be asked
to indicate your Precinct 4 Contract – Greenwood
Forest – as well as your name, address, contact infor-
mation, and the time & day requested.
STREET SAFETY
Please continue to be aware of additional children
and vehicles on our streets now that school is out.
Obey the traffic laws and stay alert for anyone in or
near the street. Do not use an open street as a play-
ground and do not dart across streets without first
checking traffic in both directions.
Wishing you all a safe and enjoyable summer.

UPDATE ON MAJOR THOROUGHFARE
On July 14th, the City of Houston Planning Com-
mission took oral comments on the W. Richey/Weeds
Rd./Bourgeois Rd. amendment request. As promised
at our June 29th meeting, the County Engineer’s office
presented a revised plan requesting the deletion of
West Richey/West Greens (Weeds) “S” curve on the
Major Thoroughfare and Freeway Plan, and expand-
ing Bourgeois Road to four lanes from Champion
Forest Dr. to Hollister. This revised plan eliminates
the road that would have impacted the southwest
part of Greenwood Forest and Hurst Park, as well as
Bourgeois Forest.
Eight residents of Greenwood Forest attended the
hearing along with several from Bourgeois Forest,
the owner of the horse farm, and a representative of
Glorious Way Church. No one spoke in opposition to
the revised plan, and the chairman of the commission
stated that they were well aware of the sentiments of
the impacted neighborhoods, having received over 200
comments submitted through their website.
I fully expect the Planning Commission to approve the
revised proposal on August 11th, and forward it to City
Council for final approval before the end of the year.
Thank you to everyone who submitted comments
on this amendment request. You made a difference!
There were a number of people at this hearing who
had just learned of proposed changes in their area,
some impacting family farms owned since the 1880’s,
and they were at a loss as to how to stop what the
county is requesting.
We were fortunate to have found out about the
amendment in time to address it, and fortunate to live
in a community of people willing to step-up to protect
our neighborhoods.
Thank you again,
Rebecca Rex
