• Device, platform, and application diversity will continue to grow in the smartphone category. Each year Microsoft releases over 20 new devices, RIM releases around three, and count at least one more for Apple and Android.
• It is highly unlikely that there will be market convergence around a single operating system or device family in the foreseeable future. The top four mobile operating systems each hold a market share of more than ten percent.
• More than 40 percent of employees are using their own smartphones to search the internet work-related tasks

You can’t dictate iPhone, but you can dictate smartphone.
Key Challenges
• Device Management – standardization is unlikely
• Integration – connectivity with SunGard, BlackBoard
• Adoption – make changes based on user feedback
• Connectivity – challenging on suburban campuses
• Security – authentication for different levels of authority
So… Do we build a web version or So… Do we build a web version or develop native applications?develop native applications?
Web Development• Low cost of ownership• Configure it once, run it anywhere• Adaptive rendering can improve the experience• Risk of low adoption (no presence on the app stores)• Limited functionality
Native Applications• Intuitive navigation, speed, and usability is unmatched• Tight integration with device functionality (camera, mapping)• Ability to cache data for off-line use (+ alerting capabilities)• Resource intensive• Expensive

Ongoing Maintenance requires 2-4 technical FTEs to provide device & mobile OS support, feature and bug fix coding, partner fees & relationship management, change control, and more.
Custom Development requires a sophisticated team including a product manager, UI lead, 5 engineers, and 3 QA staff for 6-8 months per device to deliver a first-generation, secure, enterprise-grade mobile application.
