Greetings!
On August 24, SBA faculty member, Dr. Richard Goeke was
awarded the prestigious Lindback Award given to a faculty
member who demonstrates excellence in teaching. Dr. Richard
Goeke exemplifies the intellect and open-mindedness of a
teacher and scholar and engages students in his research. He is
an articulate professor with high academic standards. The
words which describe Dr. Goeke are challenging, thorough,
caring, and committed.
This fall, I am pleased to welcome two new faculty members to the SBA. Dr. Dan Boylan received
his PhD from Purdue University, and will teach Accounting courses. Dr. Claudia Guerrazzi who
earned her PhD from University of Alabama, Birmingham will primarily teach Healthcare
Management courses.
Also, this fall we have two new Executives in Residence, Mr. Carl Gordinier, Senior Vice-President
and Wealth Management Advisor at Merrill Lynch Wealth Management and Mr. Anthony Miller,
Executive Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer of Janney Montgomery Scott. They will
offer workshops on Finance topics and work with Money Club students. In addition, our third
Executive in Residence, Mr. John Baldino will continue to work with Business Analytics students.
Mr. Baldino brings experience in IT, as well as expertise in Leadership, Change Management,
Strategic Initiatives, and Program Management.
This academic year we will have two accreditation visits - CAHME (Commission on Accreditation
of Healthcare Management Education) and AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of
Business). The team from CAHME will be on campus in early December. Additionally, the peer
review team (PRT) assigned by AACSB will visit the SBA in January 2018.
As of July 1, the Center for Hospitality Management is housed in the SBA. I welcome the faculty,
staff, students, and alumni to the SBA.
This fall, we are excited to welcome our undergraduate and graduate students. We welcomed more
than 100 freshmen and transfer business students. The incoming graduate students bring diverse
perspectives based on their work experience.
On September 14, the SBA hosted an alumni event in Center City Philadelphia. It was very well
received and nearly 70 alumni attended the event. They had an opportunity to meet our new Provost
Dr. Dale Scalise-Smith.
Finally, homecoming is on October 14 and I look forward to seeing you there.
Best regards,
Dr. Jayati Ghosh

Dr. Richard Goeke recognized with 2017 Lindback Award
Richard Goeke stands with Provost Dale Scalise
-Smith, left, and President Julie Wollman, right,
after he received the Lindback Award.
Chester, Pa. – Dr. Richard J. Goeke, an associate professor in
the Widener University School of Business Administration
and a Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania resident, has received the
2017 Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished
Teaching.
As Widener Provost Dr. Dale Scalise-Smith announced
Goeke as the recipient, she noted his passion for student
research projects aimed at solving real-world business
problems.
Goeke's students echoed the sentiment with one saying he
is "always willing to help in every aspect of a student's
education and is interested in the student beyond the
classroom."
Another student said, "The professor fills the room with
energy and brings 110 percent to every class."
The Lindback Award is given to a faculty member who has
demonstrated a history of teaching at the highest level. It is
endowed by the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback
Foundation, a Philadelphia-based foundation that provides
grants to institutions of higher education for the promotion
of excellence in teaching. The honor is bestowed annually to
a member of Widener's faculty.
"I am grateful to be recognized," Goeke said. "It was very
surprising because there are so many good teachers at
Widener."
Goeke's success in the classroom stems from the relationships
he cultivates with students and the time he invests in student
research and projects.
Since 2011, Goeke has mentored 80 students in research projects, 16
of which were presented at various venues including Honors Week,
Student Project Day, High Impact Practices Fair and before the Board
of Trustees. Two graduate students will present their research at the
2017 Decision Sciences annual conference this year.
He also collaborated with 96 students to build web-based systems that
address real-world problems. For example, his students
developed a prototype system to replace the paper-based method the
varsity baseball coach was using to track team academic performance
in 2016 and developed an online book exchange in 2011.
"Dr. Goeke also takes citizenship seriously and contributes to school
and university committees, as well as serving as a journal reviewer
and discussant at national meetings," Scalise-Smith said. "He's a true
teacher scholar with an extensive list of publications and
presentations."
Goeke holds a Bachelor of Science in computer science from
Bowling Green State University, a Master of Business
Administration from University of Akron, and a Ph.D. in
management systems from Kent State University.
Goeke worked for 17 years for The Goodyear Tire & Rubber
Company in various management, marketing, finance, accounting and
data processing positions. In 2007, he joined Widener University as
an assistant professor. Today, he is an associate professor and teaches
undergraduate and graduate courses, including management
information systems, business analytics and database management.
At Widener, Goeke has received numerous awards, including the
Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award in the School of
Business Administration in 2010, 2014 and 2016. He received
summer research grants in 2010 and 2014.
He also has served on the Promotion, Tenure and Retention
Committee since 2013, the Faculty Qualifications Taskforce as chair
from 2015 to 2016 and the Strategic Planning Committee since 2014.
"When I was nominated for the Lindback Award, I thought that was
good enough," Goeke said. "It is really quite humbling to be honored
in this way."
"The fields I teach in – business analytics and statistics – there are a
lot of hands-on activities," he said. "I think the students like hands on
rather than just reading out of a book."

Executives in Residence I am an experienced financial advisor to the high net worth
individual and institutional market. I started my career in 1993, I am a
Senior Vice President-Wealth Management at Merrill Lynch and the
production and assets I manage place me in the top 10 percent of all
Merrill Lynch financial advisors.
Wealth management is much more than a series of portfolio
transactions. It is an objective, disciplined process carried out over
years, even decades — not weeks or months. I have learned that
helping clients understand their current financial situation relative to
their long-term goals is a necessary first step to creating, preserving
and growing
wealth.
Mr. Miller is an Executive Vice President and serves as the firm’s
Chief Administrative Officer and Financial Operations Principal. He
joined the firm in 2002 as the Director of Internal Audit with the
challenge of creating the firm’s risk assessment framework. In 2004 he
transitioned into the Corporate Controller function responsible for all
areas of the Finance function and served in this capacity for two years
prior to being promoted into the Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer
role. He served in that role for five years until being assigned the Chief
Administrative role in 2012 with responsibility for Finance, Operations
and Information Technology.

New Instructors I have always been interested in how management can serve
community welfare. Specifically, my interests are related to the
strategic management of innovation in organizations, especially
technological innovation in organizations that operate in industries that
intend to serve the public good, such as health care and public
administration.
My research interests lie in understanding the consequences of rules,
both legal and industry mandates, on organizations. This includes the
impact of ethics regulation on organizations and understanding the
opportunities social media has for financial statement dissemination.
I am an Assistant Professor of Accounting at Widener University.
In my career in education I have earned teaching awards on seven
occasions. I earned my PhD from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.
I also enjoy serving as an advisor for student organizations. In this capacity, clubs I have advised have won
"Organization of the Year" twice and I have earned "Advisor of the Year" twice. This year, I will be the
advisor for Beta Alpha Psi.
I am currently teaching Elementary Statistical Analysis and Health Policy. Through teaching, I pursue
three main goals: enabling students to really and fully understand concepts through the learning
process that characterizes each student; fostering students' interaction and collaborative
problem-solving; and allowing students to apply what they learn and to develop critical thinking.
I received my PhD in Health Services Administration from the
University of Alabama at Birmingham. I obtained both my MSc and
BSc degrees in economics and management of public administration
in Italy, from Bocconi University and the University of Siena,
respectively.
I have journal articles published on Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) on
the use of both social media and Twitter for the delivery of
financial statements to Stakeholders. Additionally, I have
several articles based on effective teaching methods in business.

Pi Sigma Epsilon is the only national, co-ed, professional fraternal organization in sales, marketing, and
management. Ask members of our organization why they joined, and their answers will vary. But one thing we
all agree on is that it is the best decision of our entire collegiate career. From meeting high-quality friends to
participating in professional business projects that develop our skills, Pi Sigma Epsilon has much to offer to
college students. Every semester Professor Mary Shoemaker invites her industry contacts, former and current
students to network with her and her constituents. She understands the value of networking and the role it
plays in finding her students opportunities. Professor Shoemaker has been invaluable finding internships and
full time jobs for her students. She appreciates alums who come back each year and help the next group of
undergraduates find internships and job placements.

Career Fair in Lathem Hall
Envestnet Institute on Campus is an exciting online program designed by leaders in the financial world to
help educate college students on the “language of business.” This unique program gives our students an
opportunity to study online while in school to learn more about financial services. We have the benefit of
location, location, location. Vanguard, BNYMellon, JPMorgan Chase, State Street, Franklin Square Capital
Partners and other firms are located within twenty five minutes of our campus. These firms want to hire
educated and informed students that can hit the ground running. After achieving an 80% on Envestnet
Institute tests, the student’s resumes are uploaded and students will start to receive offers for internship and
full time jobs.
Jim Seuffert, Senior Partner at Wheelhouse Analytics told our Money Club, “The goal is to train 5,000
students from multiple academic institutions across the United States over the next five years to streamline
them into careers in the financial industry.”
