MNDis a rapidly progressive, fatal disease. It attacks
the motor neurones that send messages from the brain to the muscles, leaving people unable to walk, talk or feed themselves, but their intellect usually remains unaffected.
Around 5,000 people in the UK have MND at any one time. With no known cure half die within 14 months of diagnosis.
The MND Association funds and promotes research to bring about an end to MND. Until then, we are doing all that we can to enable everyone living with MND to receive the best care, achieve the highest quality of life possible, and die with dignity. We are also doing all that we can to support the families and carers of people living with MND.
We rely on voluntary donations, fundraising events and legacies, and greatly appreciate every gift that we receive and the thought behind them.
All kinds of new events have been added to our fundraising calendar for 2009. We are
celebrating our 30th Anniversary this year and would welcome any help you can provide to make it a year to remember.
We have a wide range of events to suit all tastes and abilities, from running to fire walking. If none of these suit you we can support you or your organisation in whatever fundraising activity you choose to do. Just let us know what you would like to do and we’ll tell you how we can help.
Here’s a rundown of what’s on for 2009. More detail about all these events is contained in our Fundraising pack.

What prompted yourinterest in the UK’s airambulance service? It started with a charity day at NorwichAirport with the East Anglian AirAmbulance (EAAA). I was helping tolaunch a special piece of equipment, which detects overhead cables forhelicopter pilots. On chatting furtherto the helicopter crews I becameaware of just how valuable their workis, and in a small way, wondered if Icould raise awareness and interest intheir fundraising campaigns.
What impressed youmost when you startedto learn more about theair ambulance service?I couldn’t believe that the EAAA – likethe other 17 air ambulance charities inEngland and Wales - is entirely fundedby charitable donations and yet theyperform such a valuable, life-savingservice for everyone in the country. Thecrews have to be so skilled and brave totake on a new location and situation on
every flight, and not always in the bestof weather conditions. With growingroad traffic, sometimes a helicopter isthe only form of transport that canquickly reach an accident scene.
When did you firstbecome interested inflying?I’ve been interested in flying since beinga little boy and have a keen interest inspace exploration and all things aero-nautical. I started out my own flyingexperience in gliders and then, morerecently, in helicopters. I relish thechallenge of flying a helicopter as it isnotoriously difficult and it is a totaldistraction from everything else.
What’s your message tothose who don’t knowabout the airambulance service? One of my chief aims in beinginvolved with the AAA is to highlightthe fact that all the air ambulancecrews around the UK are solelydependent upon donations and couldnot survive without them. I know thateveryone is constantly being asked todig deep into their pockets for somany charities but this one reallydoes help to save lives on a dailybasis. They get no financial helpeither from the Government or theNational Lottery – not even for fuel.As with so many causes, it’s down tothe great British public to fund it in itsentirety. If everyone gave just asmuch as they could spare, it wouldmake a huge difference to the upkeepof this critical life-saving service.

In just 10 years 99% of South Asian vultures have been poisoned,
allowing disease-ridden rats and feral dogs to thrive in their place.
The RSPB (along with Birdlife International) helped identify the poison as
Diclofenac, a cheap anti-inflammatory drug used to treat cattle. When the cattle
died vultures disposed of the carcass. Although harmless to cattle, it emerged
that Diclofenac is lethal to any vulture feeding on the meat.
After successfully campaigning for a ban the RSPB is developingvital breeding programmes to bring back vultures from the
edge of extinction.
Work like this continues aroundthe world because people remember
the RSPB in their will.
But for the 60% of peoplewithout a will the right to support
causes you care about disappears.Instead the taxman will decide where and
how your estate is spent.
Your legacy can last forever.

11amFirst stop is to deliver furniture, bric-a-brac and the essential cases of Fair Tradewine. The rest of the day will be spent shopping for and preparing all ourhomemade salads and cakes.
4pmWe head out to the strawberry fields where our very good friends at the local ‘PickYour Own’ donate as many pounds of fruit as we need for the Garden Party. Ahappy hour or two of picking and occasional sampling, yields us wonderfullyflavoured strawberries.
7pmOur homemade cakes always find satisfied customers and Friday evening is spentin a whirlwind of baking - everything from flapjacks to crumbly shortbread. A bit oflast minute preparation for our stalls and we all go to bed with the excitement ofchildren on Christmas Eve!

SATURDAY – THE GREAT DAY6amI open the curtains with a great sense of anticipation and thankfully thesky is a beautiful cloudless blue with a warm summer breeze - perfect fora Garden Party. I go up to the attic to retrieve our homemade ‘WaterAid’banners and my Indian water jar.
8amI use pond water for my “Would you drink this water?” jar. The GardenParty is going to be a day of fun and relaxation for all our guests but ajar of filthy water on my campaigning table speaks very eloquently ofwhy we raise funds for WaterAid. We do remind people that there areabout a billion people in our world with no choice but to drink thiswater. We also emphasise the lasting good that the money raised atthe Garden Party can make.
9amA huge buzz of excitement fills the air as we all arrive. Stalls are beingerected in the front garden and “Here Today” is being added to the posters.
11amGates open – everyone to their positions. Coffee is served. Stallholders get thebest price they can. People queue eagerly for their lunches, which they eat ontables in the back garden. We try and give each other a break on the stalls andin the kitchen so that we can eat lunch with our friends and family if possible.
2.30pmWhen the last guest has gone, we make tea for all the workers and then situnder the trees in the garden. As everyone is exhausted by then I take theopportunity to thank them and give them an update on the next fundraisingand campaigning events. We book our next proper meeting and announcethe total money raised. We go home excited and thankful. Being part of aWaterAid group is such a wonderful way to raise funds and really bring yourcommunity together. I recommend starting a group to anyone who wants tomake a difference!

Without gifts in Wills, Amber would have to make some very hard decisions and makesome dramatic cuts. In the present economic climate this is not something the charitywant to do, as they exist to help homeless, unemployed young people to get a job and aplace to live. This makes the need for their service at this time greater than ever. Whendrawing up a Will people will naturally want to ensure the survival, protection and comfortof dependents and they may feel that to leave a legacy to charity will deprive their lovedones of a significant gift. Amber strongly believes that family must always come first, charity second, and that legacies do not need to be substantial to be effective. 01225 792619www.amberweb.org

How did you get involved withMercy Ships? It was back in 1996 when a colleague of mine told meabout the amazing work they do, so I decided to getinvolved and have been volunteering for them for 13 yearsnow. My first trip was to Madagascar where I spent threeweeks, and it was a life-changing experience for me.
Tell us about your role onboard?I’m a Maxillofacial Surgeon, so I deal with facialdeformities and facial tumours amongst other things, and
work with both children and adults. I deal with things thatyou don’t really see much of in the UK, as tumours areoften picked up early and operated on. However in Africa, there are huge tumours that grow to an enormous sizeand become life-threatening and often result in childrenbecoming social outcasts.
How often do you volunteer forMercy Ships?I visit the ship in Africa every year for two or three weeks ata time. I have a full time job back home in Chase FarmHospital in Middlesex, so I take some professional leave anda bit of holiday and go out there – all self-funded of course.
Does the ship change locations?Yes, it usually picks out a different place in Africa everyyear. I’ve been to Liberia a couple of times, Sierra Leone,Ghana, lots of different poor countries that need help. Theship is off to the port of Cotonou, Benin, in February, which is a little country next to Nigeria. I hope to go out tohelp in March or April next year.
Do you work on the same shipeach time?Yes, it’s called The Africa Mercy, which is a large converted16,000 tonne Danish ferry. It’s a magnificent ship that hada complete refit in Newcastle, funded by charity and tookseveral years to complete. It now has six operating theatresand around 100 beds.
What is life on The Africa Mercylike for you? It’s quite intensive work. We operate all day, every day, fivedays a week, and get the weekends off. However, if there’sa major problem at the weekend, we’re always on hand towork. The nursing staff are also extremely good, as theylook after the patients in intensive care.
What other volunteering roles arethere onboard? There’s doctors, nurses, chefs, water engineers, it’s ara

complete community. There may be 450 volunteersonboard at a time. People also bring their children withthem as there’s a school on the ship, and they can go onto University from there. What I like about Mercy Ships isthe fact that we can control the environment. The shipwill dock in a country, and then the patients will comeonboard and stay as long as it takes to recuperate.
Does your job get overwhelmingat times?Yes, it can get emotional as you have to make life and deathdecisions. In Africa, it’s a completely different set of values. If you can’t treat something there’s no back up ofchemotheory or radiotherapy, so we’re dealing withcancers that are spreading, even on children, and that’s theheart-breaking thing. So in the limited time that we have, with our limited resources, we have to select those we thinkare going to benefit and have life-changing procedures.
Would you encourage people tosupport Mercy Ships? Absolutely. The reason I help Mercy Ships is because it’s a
very efficient charity and you can really see where yourmoney goes. There are engineers that go out from the shipto help with village projects, talking about sanitation, cleanwater and irrigation. On top of that there are teams that trainanaesthetic technicians, midwives and basic surgery, so themoney helps to educate future doctors and surgeons too.
