This research, in the light of disasters, aims to produce online digital archive of architectural heritage on interactive website and smartphone application. This research is part of initial disaster relief response to cultural heritage at risk as mandated by UNESCO, Program Kota Pusaka of Banda Aceh (Heritage City Program), and tourism development. From historical and current research are evident that Banda Aceh is under continuous disaster thread. Therefore, not only people and other importance infrastructures, but also architectural heritage, which are part of important places in Banda Aceh, is at risk. The disasters have also destroyed the archives of the past including of the architectural heritage. This condition is exacerbated by lack of detail documentation of architectural heritage and integration between existing architectural data and socio-cultural analysis. Due to the 2004 Tsunami Disaster in Banda Aceh, there was significant loss of heritage buildings and archives. For example, some architectural heritage reconstruction during the rehabilitation and reconstruction process has been undertaken with minimal conservation approach and principles. The reconstruction of Peulanggahan Mosque, the last example of mosque from pre-colonial style mosque in Banda Aceh, had been undertaken in poor conservation by changing its materials and details. This has changed its architectural values and consequently has caused the deletion of this mosque from Badan Pelestarian Cagar Budaya (BPCB) list. Therefore, detail and careful documentation of architectural heritage is imperative. This research did a careful documentation on Peunayong Shophouses using digital humanities approach, the combination between anthropology, vernadoc, and digital method.
Alhamdulillah (Thanks to Allah Almighty), we express our gratitude to Allah, who supported and enabled us in
finishing this research project entitled ”Re-creation of Banda Aceh's Built-heritage through Digital Humanities
Approach as a Tool for Trauma Mitigation in a Post-disaster Society”. This research was only possible because of
the friendly and welcoming reception we received from our respondents in Peunayong, who told us their stories
and perceptions. We had a very good team Vernadoc participants from Department of Architecture and Planning,
Syiah Kuala University. We also met many people, government officials, expert, visitors, and inhabitants of
Banda Aceh, during our fieldwork that may not appear in this research, but who nonetheless helped us to carry
out our research and better understand the context of our case studies. We would also like to thank the Ministry of
Research and Higher Education for providing the financial support for this research projects.
As the most multicultural precint with layers of multicultral roles in shaping the place – the intersect between not only ethnic amongs other Dutch European Colonial, Chinese, other etcnics and majority Acehnese, but also religions Christian,Budhism, and Muslim -- dissonance has played an important role in heritage construct in Peunayong. As heritage is a continous process of negotitation and contestation of values, and memories, dissonance will become part of this process that should not be regarded as an unforseen (Graham et al, 2000) and it is important aspect in heritage recreation (Smith, 2006). Therefore, the act resulting dissonant heritage moment in Peunayong born. In the ways longtime effort to assimilate with local culture and keep remembering their own culture are heritage moment for Chinese. While for Acehnese, the way they are trying to respect so called Chinese architecture and their long struggle to obtain economic place in Peunayong as a way to reclaim their majority status
