Why we changed our name.Over the past eight years we have played a unique role in our community, one that focuses on education, child literacy, and health as foundations for
empowering children and families to achieve productive, self-reliant lives. During 2006-2007 we have been actively engaged in a lengthy community needs assessment and organizational strategic planning process. Based on these efforts, the decision was made to change the name of the organization to one that better describes what we do.
Why Reading and Beyond?Reading and Beyond was chosen as our new name because Reading spotlights what has been the heart of the organization since day one - helping low-income children build strong reading and academic skills. However, our mission also goes Beyond helping children learn how to read. We
believe that there are many “foundations” that need to be built to help a child grow up and lead a productive life. These foundations includeinvolved parents, young children beginning school prepared, good health, and skills on how to prepare for college.

2007 Annual ReportReading and Beyond (formerly Fresno Covenant Foundation)
A Message from the Executive DirectorRecognition and change are the two words that come to my mind when I think about this organization in 2007. When I heard the United States Secretary of Education, Margaret
Spelling, mentioning the impact of this organization, in her speech on September 24th, I realized that our eight years of helping children learn how to read is now recognized
not only by our local community but also by the United States Department of Education.
Who would have thought nine years ago, when we started this organization, that the day
would come when we would be tutoring over 900 children daily throughout our 10 AfterSchool sites; when more than 10,000 parents in the past three years learned skills to help
their children do well in school as well as to build a healthy lifestyle and when over 100 Infants and toddlers are receiving home visitations on a regular basis, to assist their development and get them ready to begin school.
As much as the word recognition defines a lot of what happened to us in 2007, the
word change will be playing a much bigger role in the years to come. Although we are proud of the heritage of our original name, Fresno Covenant Foundation, we felt the need to have a name that better reflects what we do. As of December 5, 2007, the new name of this
organization became Reading and Beyond.
In the beginning of the year, we started implementing our Strategic Plan with the continued goal of having a healthy organization with a more holistic approach of going beyond just helping children with reading. Our efforts will focus on all
areas needed for children to become successful and self-reliant adults.
As we look forward to what will be unveiled to us in 2008, I am thankful for what happened during 2007. Once again, I am thankful for the dedication of all of our volunteers and financial supporters, the leadership of the Board
of Directors and the undoubted dedication of the staff. The truth is that without all of you, this organization wouldn’t exist.
In service to the children and families of Fresno County,
Luis Santana,
Executive DirectorReading and Beyond (formerly Fresno Covenant Foundation)

Building Foundations for Children and Families. 6
2007 Annual ReportReading and Beyond (formerly Fresno Covenant Foundation)
Reading and Beyond’s first program was the reading tutoring program for low-
income children who were struggling in school. In 1999 this program began with 30 students and in 2007 reached an enrollment number of over 900 students
being tutored daily. It’s common for children to enroll in the program who are one
to five grade levels behind. This program, like all our other programs is “research-based” and developed using best practices in the field. The goal of the tutoring
program is for a child who is enrolled in the program for six months or longer, to improve by at least one grade level in reading and comprehension. To monitor
their progress, each child's reading level is assessed every ten weeks.
Adults of all ages and backgrounds come to one of our sites to tutor children. The goal is to give children the individual and small group help they need to improve
and be able to read at grade level. Volunteers can work with a child one to four times per week, for one to five hours (based on the volunteer’s availability). This
program operates five days per week, for three hours per day.
Reading and Beyond’s tutoring sites are located at: St. James Anglican Cathedral, First Covenant Church, Hope Lutheran Church, El Encino Baptist Church, Balderas Elementary, Heaton Elementary, Storey Elementary, Wishon Elementary, Westpark Elementary, Laton Elementary and Conejo Middle School.
• In 2007, 925 children were enrolled in our after-school
reading program.
• 72% of the children enrolled in the program improved at least
one grade level within six
months.
• In September, our tutoring program was recognized in a speech by the US Secretary
of Education. (see page 15)

2007 Annual ReportReading and Beyond (formerly Fresno Covenant Foundation)
Child success is the goal of all of Reading and Beyond’s programs and the Parent
Involvement Program was designed based on research which shows that greater parental involvement correlates with student achievement and success. The Parent Involvement Program works with parents on practical educational issues that they encounter when their child is struggling in school. Parents participate in the program to learn how to navigate the school system, how to work with their child’s teacher, and how to create a home environment that will help their child learn. We work with parents through classes, workshops, one-on-one meetings, and in-home visits.
The centerpiece of The Parent Involvement Program is an RV (recreational vehicle) that was transformed into a mobile classroom. This classroom-on-wheels allows us to provide training in locations convenient for parents, such as apartment complexes, churches, supermarkets, schools and other non-profit organizations. Our parent trainers are also sent to a variety of locations throughout Fresno and provide workshops in parents’ native languages.
Since 2003 the Parent Involvement Program has been funded by a federal grant. 2007 was the final year of federal funding for this program. We plan to continue the needed program through other streams of funding from both grants and community support.
2007 Program Highlights
• In 2007, 2,431 Parents
participated in Reading and Beyond’s Parent Involvement Program.
• In 2007, Reading and
Beyond delivered 133 parent workshops. Topics included family literacy,
parent leadership, and strategies parents can
implement at home to help their children improve in school.
• Reading and Beyond
launched a Fatherhood Involvement Program in partnership with Clovis
Unified School District.

“A parent is a child’s first teacher” is the philosophy of Reading and
Beyond’s Early Childhood Education program. This program is a nationally-
recognized, research-based program, deemed an effective program for
children ages zero to five years and their parents.
We know that the first five years of a child’s life are essential to their long
term development and achievement. This program was started to help ensure that young children, ages zero to five, develop properly and begin school
prepared. In 2007, First Five of Fresno County granted the funds to expand this program. In response to parent’s requests, children in the program now
receive home visits every other week instead of once per month.
This Early Childhood Education program includes home visits, group
meetings, and health screenings, with curriculum that focuses on educating parents about their children’s development and helping ensure that children
are “school-ready” by the time they begin kindergarten.
• In 2007, over 110 children were enrolled in Reading
and Beyond’s Early Childhood Education program.
• Our staff conducted 1,775 home visits in 2007.
• Based on feedback from families, Reading and
Beyond increased the number of home visits that a
child receives from monthly to every other week.
• First Five of Fresno County awarded Reading and
Beyond a grant to expand the Early Childhood Education program.

Poor health can easily harm a child’s education, but it is often overlooked as a
cause of drain on a child’s energy, attention span and brain function. From this
program and future research, Reading and Beyond plans to build its capacity
to more effectively respond to community health concerns by addressing the
identified needs and becoming a leader in changing unhealthy behaviors among
the children and families in our community.
Reading and Beyond’s Health Program continued to expand during 2007 with
funds from The California Endowment. Parents of the children who are enrolled
in our tutoring program attend health and nutrition classes to learn ways in which
health impacts their child’s education. In addition, the children enrolled in the
after school program participate in physical fitness activities in addition to
tutoring.
• Over 1,220 parents attended Reading and
Beyond’s Health Education Classes in 2007.
• Reading and Beyond Conducted 112 health
education workshops. Topics included how to incorporate
fruits and vegetables into your diet, obesity and disease prevention for
conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and
high cholesterol.
• Reading and Beyond was awarded funds from The California Health Care
Foundation.

In 2007, Reading and Beyond conducted the College Preparation Program in partnership with California State University, Fresno, for middle and high school
students in the rural city of Firebaugh. This program guided the students in
career planning, hosted in guest speakers, took students on tours of multiple colleges and universities. During the summer the students got their first taste
of camping. A group of 38 students participated in a week-long wilderness and camping experience where they learned about teamwork, and preserving
natural resources.
In December of 2007, we received Upward Bound funding from the U.S.
Department of Education to expand the College Preparation Program. With these new funds, Reading and Beyond is working with Central Unified School District
to increase the number of students in Central Unified who go on to attend and
ultimately graduate from college.
• In 2007, 52 students (5th -10th grade) and their
parents participated in the college prep program.
• Two students were accepted
into a competitive, 10 day, state wide summer leadership program entitled IPO of the
Greenlining Institute in Berkeley, California.

On May 17, Reading and Beyond kicked off a new program
called “Reading to Children”. This new component of our tutor-ing program is designed to invite local community leaders to
come read their favorite children’s book to a group of children
in our tutoring program and talk to them about the importance of reading and education. The kids have an opportunity to ask
questions about their job and learn why reading is important in any career.
The kids in the program created a list of people they wanted to meet, and made a list of careers they wanted to learn more
about. Fresno Fuego Soccer Players kicked off the program on May 17th. Throughout the summer and Fall the children had an
opportunity to meet and hear from many local leaders and
professionals. We plan to continue this program throughout 2008.
