Conflict

The problem in the story, the plot actions or problems that the characters encounter.

Character

A person in the story.

Protagonist

The central character of the story.

Antagonist

The bad guy, the character that is creating the conflict.

Secondary Characters

The extra characters that help move the story along.

Climax

The most exciting event, usually built up from the preceding event. The highest point of action in a story.

Rising Action

Middle part of the story where things happen.

Falling Action

Follows the climax.

Conflict Resolution/Conclusion

The end of the story and the resolution of the conflicts.

Resolution

The ending of the story.

Dialogue

Characters talking to each other.

Characterization

Author describes the character.

Mood

The feeling the reader gets.

Setting

The time and place of a story.

Tone

The author’s attitude about a part of a story.

Point of View

The angle which the story is told.

First Person Point of View

The story is written as though the main character is telling it; I is used throughout the story.

Third-person point of view

The story is written from a storyteller’s perspective.
