Carpetbaggers and Scalawags

• Carpetbaggers – Northerners who moved south after the war

• Scalawags- Southerners who worked with the Republicans and Northerners– Whigs, Small farmers, Southern Businessmen

Birth of the Ku Klux Klan

• Southern White Resentment unable to strike blows at the Republicans in control

• Broke up Republican meetings, drove out Freedman’s Bureau, Intimidated Blacks and White Republicans

• Main goal to resist Republican reconstruction

Ku Klux Klan Act
