We conjugate verbs differently in the preterite to indicate that the action was completed in the past.

A preterite verb can be translated to –ed in English.

Ayer- yesterday

Anteayer- the day before yesterday

Anoche- last night

El año pasado- last year

El mes pasado- last month

La semana pasada- last week

El otro día- the other day

1. Remove the AR to form the stem.

2. Add the appropriate ending to match the subject.

Yo -é

Nosotros -amos

Tú -aste

Vosotros -asteis

Él, ella, Usted -ó Ellos, Ellas, Ustedes -aron

Example: Hablar

Yo hablé (I spoke) Tú hablaste (You spoke- informal) Él/ella habló (he/she spoke) Used habló (you spoke- formal) Nosotros hablamos (we spoke) Vosotros hablasteis (you all spoke- Spain) Ellos/Ellas hablaron (They spoke) Ustedes hablaron (You all spoke)

I traveled to Costa Rica last summer. Yo viajé a Costa Rica el año pasado.

I bought a necklace for my mom.

Yo le compré un collar para mi mamá.

I sent a postcard to my grandparents.

Yo les mandé una tarjeta postal a mis abuelos.

Spelling Changers:Spelling Changers: Verbs ending in –car, -gar, and –zar have

irregular endings in the yo form only. Car -qué The spelling change Gar -gué only occurs in the “yo” Zar -cé form to keep the

sound.
