a.k.a. Block Prints

a.k.a. Lino-Cut Prints

Printmaking: The process of

producing multiples from a printing plate.

Each print produced is not a copy but is

considered an original since it is not a

reproduction of another work of art.

Relief: A type of sculpture or printing

plate in which forms project from a

background, creating a raised surface.

Composition: the organization or

arrangement of the shapes and forms in a

work of art. How you use the principles of

balance, unity, proportion, and movement

affect your composition.

Media/Medium: the physical

materials used to make the artwork.

Examples of a medium would be: paint,

pencil, clay, paper, etc. Tools used to make

the artwork like paintbrush, scissors, or

rulers are not considered mediums because

they are not present in the finished artwork.

Contour Line Drawing: a

drawing that shows the outlines of the

shapes of an object. It does not include any

shading or coloring.

Thumbnail Sketch: a small,

quick preparatory drawing made to get

ideas for a larger project.

Still Life: a work of art depicting

mostly inanimate subject matter, typically

commonplace objects which may be either

natural (food, flowers, plants, etc) or man-

made (bottles, books, vases, etc).

View Finder: a tool to help frame and

crop the subject of an artwork

Block/Plate: The surface on which the

relief image is carved. Ink is applied to the

surface of the block, and then transferred to

paper. The resulting image on the paper is

reversed from what is carved on the plate.

We will be using a linoleum block. Sometimes

we call them “lino” blocks.

Linoleum Cutter: a tool consisting

of a handle and a chisel-like cutting blade,

used to remove linoleum from the block to

create the relief design.

Brayer: The rubber roller used to

apply ink to the printing block/plate.

Needs to be cleaned carefully after use so

ink is applied evenly each time.

Inking Tray: Smooth plastic or

metal tray where ink can be applied evenly

to brayers. Needs to be cleaned carefully

after use so ink is applied evenly each time.

Baren/Rubbing Stick: A smooth

burnishing tool for pressing the paper onto

the inked printing plate.
