President’s Reports Round 1 2013
Dear PBJFC Families, Players friends,
Welcome to Preston Bullants JFC for the 2013 season.
It has certainly been a very busy off-season. There were
many new enquiries from families about joining our club,
with all of them saying how pleased they are about the
policies we have at our club. On behalf of the PBJFC
Committee I would like to say how pleased we are to see
so many very happy & smiling faces at the club this year.
(YES, Milva even the Prez has smiled!) .
I welcome also new 2013 Committee members being Pe-
ter Kerin (Vice President & Registrations), Deborah Hayes
( Playing Apparel & Photos) and Claudia Cherubin ( Mile-
stones & General Committee). I am sure these people will
make valued contributions in 2013.
We currently have 2 vacancies on our committee so
therefore are opportunities at the club for volunteers to
become involved and make a difference, so please do
not hesitate to contact me or one of our committee
members if you would like to help out and join a great
team. An important role we have to fill is Club Secretary
so therefore if you think you have the skills to undertake
this role please contact me and I can forward you a posi-
tion description.
Without doubt though the most important appointment
we made is to have our longest serving member David
Sutton putting his hand up to be our Coaching Coordina-
tor. This role will greatly assist our coaches in providing
them with a valuable resource in teaching our children
how to play football in a positive way.
Sponsors:
I also like to welcome back our platinum sponsors Joe
Ledda and Andrew Montalto from hockingstuart (see
pages 5 & 6), under 14s Team Sponsor Ray Epifano from
Ararat Building & Garden Supplies. . . Their valued contribu-
tion over the years has been fantastic.
A warm welcome also to our new silver & Under 10s Team
sponsor to Joe Tulino from Bellco Property Services.
Pre Season
Pre Season amongst all our teams has been fantastic. I
also witnessed quite a number of our players doing extra
training through Little Athletics, and the benefits have
showed.
Over the preseason we lost our Colts team due to insuffi-
cient numbers. I personally found this heartbreaking as I
have known some of the boys for a number of years and
it was sad to see them leave the club. Below is a mention
of some of these boys
Special Mention:
Nikolas McNiece. Nik would have dominated Colts footy
this year by kicking many goals and taking some huge
marks. He played 141 great games for the club and
would have broken the club record of 147 games and
become the club’s first 10-year player. It would have
been so fitting to see a McNiece hold the club record.
Aydin Dani: Aydin over years became a good on baller
and would have had a great Colts year. He played 100+
games for the club.
The other boys, Coen Giali -Brosnan, Thomas Hickland,
George Bountris, and Ben Twite are fine young & respect-
ful men who after having a taste of Colts footy last year
would also have had a great year.
RD 1 The Season Opener
3 great close games played at PCO by our Tackers, Under
12s and Under 13s. Every player tried their best and
played in the great PBJFC spirit. Fantastic to see all the
happy faces after the games, especially from all the new
players ( Our Tackers were superb) at the mighty Bullants.
Special Mentions: Our 13s who after having a few person-
nel changes this season, learn to play footy in a great
team spirited way. Louie “ The Fly” Diab has done a great
job with the boys by giving them confidence over the
preseason and it showed on Sunday even if they lost
game. Two boys that really come out of there shells were
Jack “The Ripper” Perin and Mo “The Magician” Merhi.
Thanks to All Our Match Day helpers: Canteen: Eleanor &
Charlotte, BBQ: Brad “Green Thumb” Whitfield, Score-
board: Julia & Katia; Ground Set up: Dean “Mr. Wall Street
$$ Hayes, Paul “Pizza Man” O’Connell and Peter “The Ap-
prentice” Kerin.
Thanks also to the parents who helped with various duties
that they were rostered on for.
Kind Regards
Sam Botoulas

Match Report
Last Sunday 14th April saw the Tackers take the field against St. Mary's B for Round 1
@ Preston City oval.
The team was excited to be playing at their great home ground after two successful
practice matches against Bundoora and West Preston.
The boys put in a great effort by sticking to their positions and zones, that resulted in
strong defence and scoring opportunities that hit the mark and impressed the home
crowd and opposition.
Highlights were the intensity in the contests, moving the ball quickly out of the centre
to the forward line and accurate kick passing.
In a generous gesture from St Mary's, their coach presented an encouragement
medal to one of our players that they felt had played well and worked hard all
game. That player was Serge Mariani. Well deserved!
Too be able to play at such a high quality ground is a big buzz in itself for the kids,
let alone having a great support network of assistant coach, team managers, water
carriers, goal umpire, time keeper and an enthusiastic, loud cheering parent group.
Good onya team!

Round 1 saw the under 10’s travel to Lynden Park and take on the Camberwell
Sharks (2) which had all involved excited at getting back into a new season with
new challenges ahead. In perfect footy conditions our round 1 co-captains in Na-
than Douglas and Patrick Davies lead our team out into a hard fought first quarter
which had us spraying many shots on goals (7 shots on goal for a return of 1.6) not
ideal but plenty of hype and movement in our forward attacking 50
The second quarter was something to behold where Ethan Lowe decided to take
the game by the scruff of the neck and really put Preston in the box seat. A huge
effort from centre half forward saw Ethan finish the day with 3 goals and a contend-
er for mark of the year! His second efforts and run throughout the match set the
agenda for the rest of the game.
Other team mates started to get heavily involved including Alex Lukic with some
very strong aerial efforts, birthday boy Darcy Boxall who was in and under every-
thing and applying some fantastic tackles and Alexander Azzopardi who thought it
was an athletics meet tearing up the grass everywhere he went. Alexander was al-
so awarded by the opposition the weekly encouragement award for a blistering
performance.
Excellent efforts with tackling and pressure by the likes of Nicolas Spataro, Zac
Vaiano, Pattie Davies, Billy Rodda and Lucas Franin. Areas to work on in the coming
weeks to really make an impact as a team centre around working our zones and
being disciplined by sticking to the team values of not being selfish and looking for
the best options irrespective of which quarter we are in or where we are on the
scoreboard. A great first up match with a lot of positives to take away.

Match Report
Best: Great team effort
What a great start to the footy season. From the bounce of the ball and it was
game on, a real hard contested footy from both sides. It was unbelievable game to
watch, the standard was very high and the whole crowd was on the edge of their
seats throughout the whole game. By half time both sides managed to kick a goal
each, Alex Johnston registered Preston Bullants first goal.
The 3rd Quarter was the most satisfying of them all to see the team manage to take
it up to Surrey Park with our major players on the bench. The players made all Pres-
ton Bullants families and coaches proud, it was great to watch as you could see
significant improvement in existing and new players. In the 3rd Quarter, Finn
(Swanny) kick his first goal for the Bullants, well done Swanny.
It was a close contest all day, only 1 goal separated these two teams. The Preston
Bullants trailed by less than a goal at three quarter time. The 4th Quarter started and
the Preston Bullants managed to kick 2 quick goals via Daniel Hallet and Julian Toni-
azzo, after some great team work and we led by 6 points. We managed to hold off
Surrey Park for most of the Quarter only to concede 2 goals in the last 2 minutes of
the game to lose by 7 points.
The match was played with high intensity from the opening bounce to the final siren
from both sides. There was nothing separating these two sides all day. What I learnt
from the match today is that our Preston Bullants do have the capacity and the de-
sire to compete at this level. The players will become a better team playing in Divi-
sion 2 as it will provide a challenge not only to themselves but also as a team .
I would like to make special mention to the new players and like to congratulate
Finn and Zach on a fantastic first game, and a huge improvement from John, Finn
and Aaron. Also, Congratulations to Julian on receiving a medal from Surrey Park
for his outstanding efforts.
To the team, keep training hard and the results will come, GO BULLANTS!

Match Report
Most of the boys have been participating in running and boxing training since the
start of February and their commitment in the summer heat paid dividends on Sun-
day.
After being nominated by the club to play up a division in Under 12 Blue, which the
YJFL agreed too, we were faced with the daunting task of playing against Ashbur-
ton G who last season finished second at the end of the home and away season in
Under 11 Blue.
The game was played at PCO and there wasn't much more than a kick in it at any
time; however, we contributed to this by not playing accountable football.
This changed in the fourth quarter and although Ashburton G led by 7 points at
about the 10 minute mark the boys never give up attitude resulted in them scoring 8
points and winning by the smallest margin.
The boys should gain confidence from their performance and realise they can be
competitive in Under 12 Blue; however, they must understand that this was only the
first game in a long season and there's still room for improvement.

Match Report
Back at PCO for our round 1 clash against Ivanhoe, the boys lined up full of enthusi-
asm.
It had been an enjoyable pre season with many new players coming on board. As
well as new players, we are also lucky to have a new Coach in Louie Diab. Louie’s
game based drills at training and also his emphasis on fitness and team Spirit has
really captured the boys imagination.
The start of the game was quite a wrestle with neither team willing to give an inch.
Although we were 14 points down at quarter time hard work from Tyson, Thomas,
Oscar and Jack P had really set us up.
In the second quarter Louie reminded us that it is a team game and that team work
is what is needed if we’re to succeed. Luckily players like Liam, Dan Beck and Mo-
hamed started to run to create opportunities for others with handball and dash.
This attitude is contagious and before long Jackson was lining up for the first of his
two goals after marking a nice pass from Matt.
In the third our backline was under enormous pressure. Time and time again the ball
was finding its way down there. We needed someone to stand up and take control.
Anthony fit the bill perfectly, his backline positioning, marking and kicking really
kept us in the game. Assisted by Jack P, Andreas, Julian and Antares our backs kept
Ivanhoe to just one point for the quarter.
Although down by three goals, we felt we were still a good chance in the last quar-
ter.
What a great quarter it was! Mohamed came to the party with two great opportun-
istic
goals and Jackson added another one. We hit the front with seven minutes remain-
ing.
Unfortunately enough time for Ivanhoe to reply with two gaols.
We were right in this game. I can’t be happier with the progress we’ve made since
our practice matches.

Congratulations to Dan Z & Sean F on their 1st game with the Bullants, both had terrific debuts &
we’re looking forward to many more.
1st Game of the year played in perfect conditions. We got off to a slow start, St Mary’s got first use
of the ball, moved the ball quickly catching us off guard & kicked a couple of unanswered goals.
To the boys credit they didn't panic, instead lifted their intensity , stuck to the game plan, ran &
carried the ball long distances to an open forward line & finished with a couple of very timely
goals….
The backline were also very solid, every player in defense played close man on man accountable
football as instructed, and when the opportunity came they played attacking football as per the
game plan.
In the 2nd quarter the boys lifted the intensity even further & kicked several unanswered team lifting
goals. The boys were 1st to the ball; the tackling was fierce & kept up the 1% ers all over the
ground. The opposition found it hard to get through the rock solid well-disciplined back line. The
forwards also fought hard to lock the ball in to ensure there were no easy clearances.
At half time the players stayed focused & determined not to let St Mary’s back into the game. In
the 3rd quarter St Mary’s lifted its intensity, managed to get first use of the ball, made us look slow &
kicked a couple of unanswered goals. As in the first quarter the boys didn't panic , instead lifted its
work rate even further & were very competitive again, stuck to the game plan, delivered the ball
to our run & carry players who kicked long to the advantage of players up forward…..and capital-
ized with some real team lifting goals.
In the last quarter the boys were determined not to let this game get away & finished strongly out-
scoring the opposition 4 goals to 2. We did this by playing to our strengths, maintaining possession,
running hard, shepparding, kicking, and handball to running players or into open spaces rather
than kicking high to opposition packs.
All in all it was a fantastic first up effort, against quality opposition, while the result was extremely
pleasing it’s early days & there’s a lot of room for improvement. During preseason training we
spoke about our team values which are based on, respect, commitment and self-belief. On Sun-
day, it was obvious that these ideals were demonstrated by every player for the majority of the
game. A great way to start the season, it was a true team effort , particularly pleasing is the way
you all played as a TEAM, took the game on, backed each other and worked hard to protect your
fellow team mates…
Some Game highlights:
Dan Z’s bash & crash style, strong marking & long kicks deep into the forward line.
Conor Howards sure hands ( In the air & on the ground ) capped off with some very accurate kick-
ing for goal.
John K’s miracle goal from the boundary line (Ala Peter Daicos)
Liam Mac’s skills were on show , he seemed to have the ball on a string, marked strongly,
ran ,carried & used the ball to perfection , was also responsible for a few switches.
Sean Foley’s timely marks & quick hands in close that resulted in a couple of timely goals.
Callum’s tenacious attack on the ball for 4 quarters, strong marking & timely goals.
Nicolas Zonta’s excellent ruck work resulting in 1st use of the ball.
Every player is encouraged to attend t as many Training sessions as possible so we can practice
the game plan & set plays as a team.
