TheMinnesotaStateUniversity,Mankato(MSU)programinCommunicationDisordershaditsbeginningsin1953withthefirstcourseofferingsthroughtheDepartmentofSpecialEducation.In1959,theprogramfacultyoffices,theSpeechandHearingClinic,theSpeechLaboratory,andtheclassroomsweremovedtoArmstrongHallonthenewHighlandCampusandbecameapartoftheSpeechandTheaterArtsDepartment.TheprogramhasremainedinArmstrongHalltothepresentday.In1976,theprogrambecametheSpeechPathologyDepartment,aseparatedepartmentwithintheCollegeofHealthandHumanPerformance.Subsequently,thenameofthedepartmentwaschangedtotheDepartmentofCommunicationDisordersandthenameoftheCollegewaschangedtotheCollegeofAlliedHealthandNursing.In1998,theDepartmentofCommunicationDisordersmergedwiththeDepartmentofRehabilitationCounseling.ThemergeddepartmentwasrenamedtheDepartmentofSpeech,Hearing,andRehabilitationServices(SHRS).Thenewdepartmentoffersfourdegrees:aB.S.orB.A.inCommunicationDisorders,aM.S.inCommunicationDisorders,andaM.S.inRehabilitationCounseling.In1983,theSpeech-LanguagePathologyandAudiologyClinicsbecameaffiliatedwiththeKeyCitySertomaClubofMankato.TheaffiliationallowsaccesstoSertomaFoundationProgramsofSertomaInternational.Sertomaisaserviceorganizationprovidingsupportforindividualswithcommunicationandotherdisabilities.ThelocalKeyCityClubprovidesfinancialsupporttotheclinicserviceprogramandSertomaInternationalsponsorsmatchinggrantsforserviceprojectsandscholarshipsupportforfacultyandstaffincontinuingeducation.Manyoftheprogram’shundredsofalumnihaveenjoyedcareersinacademia,aswellascareersinschools,rehabilitationcenters,privatepractice,medicalcenters,andhospitals.Thedepartmentisbasedonafoundationofacademicexcellenceandclinicalcompetenceinservingindividualswithcommunicativedisorders.

AtMSU,theCommunicationDisordersProgramishousedintheCollegeofAlliedHealthandNursingandisadivisionoftheCollegeofGraduateStudies.Bothundergraduateandgraduatedegreesareoffered.TheundergraduatedegreeisofferedastheBachelorofSciencedegree(B.S.)ortheBachelorofArtsdegree(B.A.),andthegraduatedegreeistheMasterofSciencedegree(M.S.).TheM.S.hasbeenofferedsince1970.MinnesotaStateUniversity,Mankato’sCDISprogramisaccreditedbytheCouncilonAcademicAccreditation(CAA)oftheAmericanSpeech-Language-HearingAssociation(ASHA).PreparationinCommunicationDisordersentailsbothundergraduateandgraduatecourseworkandclinicalpracticumexperiences.TheprogramofstudyatMSUisdesignedtomeetalloftherequirementsfortheCertificateofClinicalCompetence(CCC)issuedbyASHA.Attainmentofthiscertificationisintendedtoassurethattheindividualisfullypreparedasaspeech-languagepathologist.SuchpreparationalsomeetsorexceedsthespeechpathologyrequirementsforteacherlicensureandDepartmentofHealthlicensureinMinnesota.TheundergraduatecurriculuminCommunicationDisordersispre-professional,providespreparationforgraduatestudyinCommunicationDisorders,andleadstotheBachelorofScienceorArtsdegreeinCommunicationDisorders.ItshouldbenotedthataMaster’sdegreeistheentry-leveldegreeforspeech-languagepathologists.Employmentasaspeech-languagepathologistwithaBachelor’sdegreeisnolongerpossible.TheundergraduatedegreeinCommunicationDisordersalsooffersspecializedcoursesandpracticumsforthosepursuingacareerinaudiology.Theentry-leveldegreeforaudiologistsiseitheraclinicaldoctorate(Au.D.)oraPh.D.TheSLPgraduatecourseofstudybeginsintheFallSemesterofanacademicyear.Thespecificcoursesstudentsmusttakearepartiallyafunctionoftheirpreparationattheundergraduatelevelofstudy.StudentstransferringfromotherinstitutionsusuallyhavelittledifficultyinestablishingacourseofstudyiftheyhavealreadyearnedaB.S.orB.A.degreewithamajorinCommunicationDisorders.Studentswithoutanundergraduatedegreeinthediscipline(i.e.,transitionstudents)canexpecttotakeatleastanadditionalyearofstudytoremovedeficiencyareas(seepage20).Thegraduateprogramofstudy,whencombinedwithundergraduatecourseworkandpracticumexperiences,meetstheacademicandpracticumrequirementsfortheCertificateofClinicalCompetenceinSpeech-LanguagePathology(CCC-SLP)issuedbyASHA.Belowareselectedstandardsoutliningthemajorrequirementsforcertification(note:manyofthestandardshaverelatedrequirementsthatarealsometbythecurriculum).ThegraduatedegreeprogramfocusesontheacquisitionofclinicalcompetencywithavarietyofspecificclassesfocusingondisordersmanagementandresearchinCommunicationDisorders.

StandardI:DegreeTheapplicantforcertificationmusthaveamaster’s,doctoral,orotherrecognizedpost-baccalaureatedegree.StandardII:EducationProgramAllgraduatecourseworkandgraduateclinicalexperiencerequiredinspeech-languagepathologymusthavebeeninitiatedandcompleteinaspeech-languagepathologyprogramaccreditedbytheCouncilonAcademicAccreditationinAudiologyandSpeech-LanguagePathology(CAA).TheCDISprogramatMSU,MankatoisaccreditedbytheCAA.StandardIII:ProgramofStudyTheapplicantforcertificationmustcompleteaprogramofstudy(aminimumof36semestercredithoursatthegraduatelevel)thatincludesacademiccourseworkandsupervisedclinicalexperiencesufficientindepthandbreadthtoachievethespecifiedknowledgeandskillsoutcomesstipulatedinStandardIV-AthroughIV-GandStandardV-AthroughV-C.TheCDISgraduateprogramatMSU,Mankatorequirescompletionofaminimumof53credits(APPplan)or54credits(Thesisplan).StandardIV:KnowledgeOutcomes

StandardIV-A:Theapplicantmusthavedemonstratedknowledgeofthebiologicalsciences,physicalsciences,statistics,andthesocial/behavioralsciences.StandardIV-B:Theapplicantmusthavedemonstratedknowledgeofbasichumancommunicationandswallowingprocesses,includingtheappropriatebiological,neurological,acoustic,psychological,developmental,andlinguisticandculturalbases.Theapplicantmusthavedemonstratedtheabilitytointegrateinformationpertainingtonormalandabnormalhumandevelopmentacrossthelifespan.StandardIV-C:Theapplicantmusthavedemonstratedknowledgeofcommunicationandswallowingdisorderanddifferences,includingtheappropriateetiologies,characteristics,anatomical/physiological,acoustic,psychological,developmental,andlinguisticandculturalcorrelatesinthefollowingareas:

• Articulation• Fluency• VoiceandResonance(includingrespirationandphonation)• ReceptiveandExpressivelanguage(phonology,morphology,syntax,

StandardIV-D:ForeachoftheareasspecifiedinStandardIV-C,theapplicantmusthavedemonstratedcurrentknowledgeoftheprinciplesandmethodsofprevention,assessment,andinterventionforpeoplewithcommunicationandswallowingdisorders,includingconsiderationofanatomical/physiological,psychological,developmental,andlinguisticandculturalcorrelates.StandardIV-E:Theapplicantmusthavedemonstratedknowledgeofstandardsofethicalconduct.StandardIV-F:Theapplicantmusthavedemonstratedknowledgeofprocessesusedinresearchandoftheintegrationforresearchprinciplesintoevidence-basedclinicalpractice.StandardIV-G:Theapplicantmusthavedemonstratedknowledgeofcontemporaryprofessionalissues.StandardIV-H:Theapplicantmusthavedemonstratedknowledgeofentrylevelandadvancedcertifications,licensure,andotherrelevantprofessionalcredentials,aswellaslocal,state,andnationalregulationsandpoliciesrelevanttoprofessionalpractice.

StandardV:SkillsOutcomes

StandardV-A:Theapplicantmusthavedemonstratedskillsinoralandwrittenorotherformsofcommunicationsufficientforentryintoprofessionalpractice.StandardV-B:Theapplicantforcertificationmusthavecompletedaprogramofstudythatincludedexperiencessufficientinbreadthanddepthtoachievethefollowingskillsoutcomes:

1. Evaluation

a. Conductscreeningandpreventionprocedures(includingpreventionactivities).

b. Collectcasehistoryinformationandintegrateinformationfromclients/patients,family,caregivers,teachers,andrelevantothers,includingotherprofessionals.

c. Selectandadministerappropriateevaluationprocedure,suchasbehavioralobservations,nonstandardizedandstandardizedtests,andinstrumentalprocedures.

d. Adaptevaluationprocedurestomeetclient/patientneeds.e. Interpret,integrate,andsynthesizeallinformationtodevelop

diagnosesandmakeappropriaterecommendationsforintervention.f. Completeadministrativeandreportingfunctionsnecessaryto

supportevaluation.g. Referclients/patientsforappropriateservices.

StandardV-C:Theapplicantforcertificationinspeech-languagepathologymustcompleteaminimumof400clockhoursofsupervisedclinicalexperienceinthepracticeofspeech-languagepathology.Twenty-fivehoursmustbespentinclinicalobservation,and375hoursmustbespentindirectclient/patientcontact.

StandardV-D:Atleast325ofthe400clockhoursmustbecompletedwhiletheapplicantisengageingraduatestudyinaprogramaccreditedinspeech-languagepathologybytheCouncilonAcademicAccreditationinAudiologyandSpeech-LanguagePathology.StandardV-E:SupervisionmustbeprovidedbyindividualswhoholdtheCertificateofClinicalCompetenceintheappropriateprofession.Theamountofdirectsupervisionmustbecommensuratewiththestudent’sknowledge,skills,andexperience,mustnotbelessthan25%ofthestudent’stotalcontactwitheachclient/patient,andmusttakeplaceperiodicallythroughoutthepracticum.Supervisionmustbesufficienttoensurethewelfareoftheclient/patient.StandardV-F:Supervisedpracticummustincludeexperiencewithclient/patientpopulationsacrossthelifespanandfromculturally/linguisticallydiversebackgrounds.Practicummustincludeexperiencewithclient/patientpopulationswithvarioustypesandseveritiesofcommunicationand/orrelateddisorders,differences,anddisabilities.

StandardVI:AssessmentTheapplicantmusthavepassedthenationalexaminationadoptedbyASHAforpurposesofcertificationinspeech-languagepathology.StandardVII:Speech-LanguagePathologyClinicalFellowshipTheapplicantmustsuccessfullycompleteaSpeech-LanguagePathologyClinicalFellowship(CF). StandardVII-A:ClinicalFellowshipExperience

Theclinicalfellowshipmusthaveconsistedofclinicalserviceactivitiesthatfosterthecontinuedgrowthandintegrationofknowledge,skills,andtasksofclinicalpracticeinspeech-languagepathologyconsistentwithASHA’scurrentScopeofPracticeinSpeech-LanguagePathology.TheClinicalFellowshipmusthaveconsistedofnolessthan36weeksoffull-timeprofessionalexperienceoritspart-timeequivalent.

StandardVII-B:ClinicalFellowshipMentorship

TheClinicalFellowmusthavereceivedongoingmentoringandformalevaluationsbytheCFmentor.

StandardVII-C:ClinicalFellowshipOutcomes

TheClinicalFellowmusthavedemonstratedknowledgeandskillsconsistentwiththeabilitytopracticeindependently.

LENGTHOFPROGRAMSTypically,anundergraduatemajorcanbeexpectedtocompletetherequirementsfortheB.S.degreeinfouracademicyears,beginningthemajorcourseworkinthesophomoreyear.Allcoursesinthemajorareofferedonlyonceayear;therefore,carefulplanningisneeded.
