PROPOSITIONThe International airport of Rio de Janeiro (Galeão) is the largest in the city and the second most utilized in Brazil. Located on the Governors Island (Ilha do Governador), it is situated just over 20km from the center of Rio de Janeiro, to which it is connected by major motorways: Linha Vermelha, Linha Amarela and Avenida Brasil.

Rio International Airport currently handles 9,100 passengers per hour, equivalent to 15 million passengers per year. During the Olympics, the demand is expected to increase to 15,000 passengers per hour, equivalent to 25 million passengers per year. In order to increase the capacity of the airport, the Federal Government is already planning a number of interventions, including:

• Upgrading the two runways to provide capability for A380 operations

• Constructing two parking areas with a total capacity of 6,000.• Constructing an additional 12,000m² logistics facility to enhance

airport cargo capacity to 120,000 tons per year by 2014, well above the expected Games demand.

• Improvement of the terminal buildings to cope with increased number of passengers.

Your proposal responds directly to the last point on this list: to design how the terminal buildings of the International Airport of Rio de Janeiro (Galeão –Antonio Carlos Jobim) will cope with the increased passenger numbers during the 2016 Olympics.

Information about the siteAs usual, at this stage in the project, only partial information is available, including: • A map showing how the airport relates to the Olympic Venues• A map showing how the airport connects into the existing road

network• Information about improvements to Rio’s transport infrastructure.• A plan of the airport site• Some external views of the existing site• Schematic diagrams of the facilities in the existing terminal buildings.

DeliverablesProduce a design proposal in response to the brief on a single poster for presentation to the rest of the class.
