Regulations
• Sarbanes Oaxley Act of 2002– Larger companies that have a CSO, GAO, or strong IT office that realizes that there
is no change management on controllers, etc.– Section 404: requires establishment of controls that reasonably protect against
preventable events that could influence a company’s value. • OSHA
– Knowing that controllers are configured correctly and knowing that someone in the office can not program a controller has merit here.
• Tread Act – Great potential here but industry has resisted so far.
• Homeland Security – Has put a lot of pressure on systems of concern– We have succeeded in the water industry and others
• USDA• ATF• FDA
– Absolutely is concerned with open systems and mistakes that endanger the quality of the product and consumer’s health
• EPA– Effluent discharge and stack emission change management
• FAA– Recently told an airline manufacturing that they needed change management
• TSA– Concerned that the baggage handling equipment does not get alteredSafety & SecuritySafety & SecuritySafety & SecuritySafety & Security

Disaster Recovery
• Case: Pet Food Manufacturer– Computer maintenance lost programs on several key assets. In spite
of manually saving programs on a central server, they ended up using a very old version made by the OEM of the machine.
• Consequences: – Hours of downtime and lost production to be made up with overtime.– Extra cost of indirect labor for remaking the asset configurations.
• Solution: – By managing asset configuration versions automatically in a central
repository and by automatically backing them up, no program is lost. As well, through version control, everyone knows which program to use immediately.
• Benefits: – Save production cost and delivery time issues by always knowing
which program is the right version.– Provide confidence in the process and controller program for the
engineering and maintenance teams.

FactoryTalk Directory Design - Federation
• Data remains distributed in its original, native environment (ie. a controller)
• Clients that need data use directory– Directory acts as a lookup service
• Data is “federated” or “propogated”, not duplicated or copied
• Data is distributed vs. centralized• This model is used today for tags and displays
– Future: Alarms and events, security settings, etc. Tag Database
