Groups were invited from all three primary schools on Bute, as well as Rothesay Academy and Argyll College. The aim of the event was to raise awareness of traditional building techniques through a series of workshops related to: stonemasonry, joinery, slate, leadwork and; pointing. The college students also had the opportunity to attend a ‘conservation tour’ of the town with a conservation accredited architect. The children received a Historic Scotland ‘goodie-bag’ at the end of the day.

The Scottish Lime Centre Trust delivered a
two-day training course. An evening ses-
sion for homeowners concentrated on
common faults and suitable upgrades to
their traditional timber windows, with the
emphasis on repair rather than replace-
ment. Demonstrations followed, showing
how to safely remove sashes and replace
cords. A practical workshop for contractors
gave local craftsmen the chance to im-
prove their skills with heritage qualified
joiner, John McRitchie.
The Lead Sheet Association delivered a
three-day course for contractors, includ-
ing a CPD presentation, covering various
topics including specification, applica-
tion, jointing and fixing. The practical
sessions gave local contractors and ar-

Shopfront Art
Project
Summer of 2012
3 Primary Schools
participated
Children from 3 primary schools on Bute took part in an Art Project entitled ‘Our Rothesay’ creating artwork which showed what they liked and how they felt about their town. Some of the artwork is now displayed aboard MV Bute and in vacant shop premises at Bishop Street. Some work is being undertaken to prepare the shop window, which we will then use for a wider art project. The area will be used as a display area throughout the September holiday to showcase the works of artists and photographers based on Bute. This will coincide with the Open Studios event, where visitors will be invited to visit the artists in their own studios around the island. The vacant shop will be used as a ‘hub’ or central base for this event.
As part of Doors Open Days, Scotland's largest free architectural event, Rothesay THI approached the owners of The Huf Haus at Ascog, Bute, who kindly agreed to take visitors around their state-of-the-art home. More than 70 people attended on the day to take in this stunning example of innovative post-and-beam architecture. Particular attention was paid to the energy efficient features of the house, such as the triple-glazed windows and under-floor heating. The aim of the overall event is to encourage people to explore different types of architecture, and is co-ordinated by the Scottish Civic Trust as part of European Heritage Days.
