SUBSTANDARD – VOLUME 6 2012 – Tom Martin 200
Greetings and welcome to Volume 6 of Substandard, the Blacks Organ, for season 2012. Highlights this week
include a Tom Martin 200 game tribute and a brilliant look-a-like photo. Thanks as always for your interest in the
AUFC, if you have any feedback or Bob Neil photos to send through please email me at chairman@bobneil.com
or call 0414 488 282. We haven’t received a huge amount of feedback recently but would love to hear from you,
especially those from interstate and overseas.
Likewise, for current teams and players, there is a keg on offer once again on season 2012 for the team that
provides the best Bob Neil photo/promotion for the year, as judged by the President. Last years winner is
featured as the Bob Neil photo of the week…suspect we wouldn’t get too many complaints if it was the featured
photo every week.
SPONSORS & MEMBERS DAY Last reminder that this Saturday is Sponsors and Members Day for the Adelaide chapter at Bob Neil 1. All paid
up Sponsors and Members are invited to the Long Room from 12:30 – 2:00 for some delectable curries and
complimentary drinks courtesy of the proprietor. Then stick around and watch the great man Tommy Martin in
his 200th game against ladder leader Tee Hee Gully. If you haven’t done so already please RSVP to Rulebook on
0414678815 or email sponsorship@bobneil.com for catering purposes. We will provide details on interstate and
overseas shows next week.
FACEBOB
Bob found good humour in Tom Colebatch’s Facebook status update last Friday afternoon
“Calling all former team-mates. Need several career references. I have been named at Full Back for Wesley-
Curtin. I feel sick.” Tom has since informed us that being named at full back made his hamstring almost tear off
the bone so he was a last minute withdrawal.
We’re now at 249 likes with the last one from “Stormy” Normy Geier who we haven’t seen nor heard much of
since his glory days as an important member of Bookem Denno & the C-grade Actors. Good to hear from you
Stormy. You will also be pleased to know that Bob dominated the Dunlop Volleys Facebook survey last week,
ending up with the vast majority of the vote as to “which Australian do you think would be the ultimate
ambassador for Volleys?”. I’m sure something big will come of that.

ROUND 5 REVIEW 4 out of 7, a bare pass but a pass nonetheless. The A grade had a very hard fought win at Tangle Park against
Max Walkerville with "Brad Davis here to save us" starring and kicking a brilliant goal from the boundary to lock
the result away with just minutes to go. Benny Castine joined a growing list of lads this year to make their A
grade debut for the club and looked right at home. Only sour note was the knee injury to Heafy but we hope
that it’s not quite as bad as it first looked.

The B grade lost by a couple of goals but were decimated by unavailability across the senior squad so no great
panic there. Pitto keeping up his good form with another BOG performance.
At the Bob Neil grounds the B*stards had a stressful start to the day when they couldn't find a key to get into
Bob Neil # 1 and therefore had to move the game to Bob Neil # 2, which clearly had an unsettling effect on the
men in Black because they got belted by Ross & Trevor. Coach Tyro ironically noted that on the day the B*stards
finally kick more goals than points the opposition kicked more points than we had scoring shots...interesting.
The C-Bombs kicked badly and therefore played badly against the Burnt Chips, eventually going down by 32
points, whilst Sugar Ray and his Drunken Cowboys also kicked badly but fortunately played a very average Burnt
Chips B grade and won by 6 goals. The Chairman made a triumphant return to the game in the Drunken
Cowboys, kicking an amazing goal from two centimetres out (about where Wilbur missed from in the 2000 B
grade Prelim) and winning himself two votes courtesy of umpire Rulebook, whom he entirely coincidentally
bought a couple of beers for on the preceding Thursday evening.
The Chardonnays and Scum rounded out the day with comfortable victories against the GGs at Bob Neil # 2, with
the Scum write up featuring as the match report of the week. Ladders for all grades can be found at the link

TOM MARTIN 200 AUFC GAMES This weekend marks a grand occasion in the history of the AUFC as Tommy Martin, otherwise known as “Tom’s
Stories”, “Drugs”, “Don’t call me Drugs”, “No Doze”, “Dr Uggs”, “Champ”, “Grenville”, “Action Man”, “Nelson”
and now simply “TM”, plays his 200th game for the worlds greatest football club.
Tom walked into club with a master plan in 1994, a vibrant and fit 17 year old fresh from year 12 as a Tarnished
Spooner, playing primarily Div 6 and 6res in his first year at the club. 16 years later he finished his AUFC career
(part 1, 198 games) after a week in Singapore/Bali for the footy trip with 3rd degree sunburn, no voice and little
vibrancy.
1994 2010
It’s fair to say that Tom didn’t leave much in the tank over the course of those 16 years, during which time he
established one of the great careers on and off-field in AUFC history. He left the club in 1995 for a stint with
PAOC and North Adelaide before returning in 1998 with Simmo and his Donkeys. In 1999 he had a crack at North
Adelaide once again, playing some league footy before famously returning just before the finals campaign which
ended with a best on ground performance against the Goodwood Sinners in the A grade’s most recent grand
final (by one point) success.
From there, aside from a short stint in the UK, he built a magnificent career at the AUFC with achievements
including A grade captain for 3 years, Gunning Medallist, Runner up Division 1 Medallist, Best on Ground in
Grand Final and a State Representative. He has played 199 games, kicked 108 goals and won himself 36 jugs of
beer for 18 BOG appearances.
On field he has been described as one of the great leaders that the club has seen and, in the words of Bruce
Willis, the best captain (or right up there just in case I slightly mis-quoted Mase) that he has come across in his
25 years in football. Off-field Tom has been a great contributor to the Committee (currently as Deputy
Chairman) and has been a driving force behind the continued strength of Hold your Bowlies over the years as a
host, songwriter (must be up there with Rulei as most prolific) and live performer via his famous Action Man
alter-ego.
After taking a year off in 2011 to recover from his severe burns, Tom has returned to the field in 2012 in good
fitness and with his renowned enthusiasm for the contest. 200 game players in the A grade are few and far
between at the AUFC and from my recollection only Cam Bryson and Dog Muir have achieved such a milestone
in the last 25 years. We congratulate Tom on his milestone and encourage you all to get out there on Saturday
to show your support for one of the true legends of the club.
In celebration of this Tom will be hosting Hold your Bowlies on Saturday night so get along for what I’m sure will
be a rousing evening of celebrations. We also have a commemorative Tommy T-Shirt for the event, limited
numbers of which will be available for only $15 at the game on Saturday. We will also keen an eye out for it on
Saturday night for the clash at Lords between the Poms and the Windies.
As always, $8 schnittys, $5.50 pints and 2 4 1 vodkas from 9-12 are on offer at the Cumby and footy/cricket will
be live on the big screen. Next weekend is another belter Bowlies with King Kernahan on the stage so best to
lock that one in your calendar as well.
CONGRATULATIONS Congrats to Brad Davis, Lachie Roach, Will Paynter and Tom Bateman for being selected in the under 23 state
squad. The lads are competing for a spot in the team that will be travelling to Tasmania on the June long
weekend for the state carnival. From a club point of its terrific to have four players in the squad, only last years
Div 1 premiers Gays r Great have more.
Separately, you may have noted that Adam Kimber has recently been promoted to the position of Director of
Public Prosecutions after previously serving as Deputy. Adam played 35 games for the club in the 1980s and has
retained a close association with University Sport over the last twenty years. He is currently the President of the
Adelaide University Cricket Club although not for much longer I suspect! Congrats to Adam.
Lastly, ex Black legend Tim “Plug” Harcourt, son of ex Black legend and life member Geoff “Prof” Harcourt, has
been recently appointed as an adviser on international engagement for the South Australian government as it
attempts to improve its image overseas. Expect to see Bob Neil become a much more important component of
state branding in future, as he should be.
DONATIONS As an alternative or addition to becoming a member or sponsor of the club, you may be interested in making a
donation of your choosing to the Adelaide University Associated Entity Fund (the Fund), which provides grants
to registered University clubs including football. The Fund is part of the University and as the University is a
registered Deductible Gift Recipient, this generally enables you to claim the donation as a tax deduction,
however the University recommends that you seek your own financial advice.
The University, directly and via the Associated Entity Fund, has been a great supporter of the club in recent years
and grants have enabled us to undertake capital projects and various club improvements that would otherwise
have been impossible for us to fund. If you wish to make donation please go to the link below, from which you
can either donate online or print off the donation form.

Please ensure that the donation is made to the Adelaide University Associated Entity Fund and click/tick
Adelaide University Football Club as your nominated entity. We will only be notified of your donation if you tick
the box on the form saying “I consent to the University disclosing my contact details to the Club or Association
that I have nominated above”.
LOOK-A-LIKE – AUSSIE BOB IN THE EARLY 90S
ROUND 6 PREVIEW Ah here we go, I needed look no further than the next round to get a picture of what our schedule could look
like in the second half of the season. I imagine that the “pay your subs or you won’t be picked this week” threat
won’t have much of an impact this round.
Div 2 (Aussie Bob & The Contract Killers) V Tea Tree Gully at Uni Oval
Div 2R (Spud O'Reilly & the non-fighting Irish) V Tea Tree Gully at Uni Oval
Div 6 (Cyril & the C-Bombs) V Central United at Mofflin Reserve
Div 6R (Sugar Ray & the Cowboys from Hell) V Central United at Mofflin Reserve
Div 8 (The Chardonnay Socialists) V Gepps Cross at Duncan Fraser Reserve
Div 8R (The Scum) V Gepps Cross at Duncan Fraser Reserve
Div C1 (The B*stards) V Goodwood at Park 10 (12:00)
Div Over 35s (The Greys) V Pooraka at Fitzroy (2:00 Sunday)
Aussie Bob & The Contract Killers will be aiming to extend their winning streak to 4 games when they take on an
impressive Tee Hee Gully side at Bob Neil # 1. Obviously it is going to be a huge day for the Killers with TM’s
200th game and a big crowd in attendance, not to mention (at the time of writing) Luke Mcentee’s first game
back in black since her infamously tore his hip flexor in the dying minutes of the 2011 2nd Semi Final against Ross
& Trevor. The team will be available on the website by now, early in the week it looked like TM, L-Mac and GHW
would return at the expense of an injured Heath and a couple of others but things can change quickly after
Thursday selection.
The non-fighting Irish have a special guest coach in King Kernahan as Spud takes a break in Bali. King is treating
the outing as some sort of therapy session in order to release some of the tension that comes with having 3 kids
under 5 at home, so you can expect to hear a booming 80s style spray at half time regardless of the score at the
time.
Cyril and the C-Bombs really really need a win when they travel out to take on a Central Dis-United that has also
been struggling at the Muff Reserve. Win this one and they’re back in the hunt, lose and it’s going to make life
very difficult from here. Sugar Ray and the Drunken Cowboys are also out at the Muff looking for back to back
wins for the first time this season and also an umpire if anyone is interested. Bonus petrol payment on offer this
week.
The Scum and Chardonnay Socialists also travel north to take on Gepps Double X at Traitor Town, whilst the
B*stards are the only event on the card at Bob Neil # 2 as they take on the Goodwood Sinners.
All up, a challenging round of footy for the men in Black. Bob be with you all.

GREYS REPORT - WITH LOVE FROM WOLVERINE Round 4
The fourth hit out for the year is against the Poo Rakers at Renown Park. This will be a good opportunity to
cement ourselves as the team to beat in the competition. Wait. Not sure where that come from. It will jst be a
bit of fun as it has been already.
Not sure why the afl clubs whinge about travelling, we have just come back from a trip none of those cloned
athletes could endure ready to face whatever the opposition can muster. As long as it is not blokes with average
fitness and a game plan.
subs and cardigans
The promise of a cardigan has seen a surge in sub paid. The grey fashion statement has been requested by 26
heads including Nat our yet to be seen at a game manager because she was in Bali or some twaddle. So those
that are still keen have until late tomorrow to get onto the bobneil.com website and pay your subs to get the
grey wonder. Other club members can also purchase online for $55.
dogs going around a track
Apparently next Thursday night there is a dog race meeting at Angle Park [to be confirmed] that is officially the
Master's Footy Dog Night. [to be confirmed]. The association would like to know if we have anyone in the list
that might like to attend. More detail to come but if this floats your boat let me know and i'll pass on a number.
Some of you might be reluctant to pass up a training night to drink beer, eat burnt animal flesh and have a punt
and i totally understand this.
SPECIAL PROMO If you’re looking for a loan keep this in mind
MATCH REPORT OF THE WEEK - SCUM In Round 5 of the 8R season AUFC SCUM played the GGs at Bob Neil 2 and etched out a solid 46 point victory.
The win all the more remarkable as most of SCUM were way more interested in the GGs at Morphettville,
particularly Race 7 starting at 4.20pm.
It looks as though the ADHD/Turrets SCUM have been weened out already this season with SCUM producing a
solid, even lucid performance on this day. There were no so called 'incidents' from the game and not many so
called 'highlights' either. Probably the only noticeable events were the systematic resting of every player over
the age of 35.
This unfortunately had nothing to do with preparing these war horses for their Sunday game with the Greys but
more so to do with age catching up with them. Howie, Mi Barker, The Don Burke and the Blonde Rwandan were
given a blanket and some mothballs late in the game. The only post 35 player to finish the contest was Rulei
after his 42 birthday on Thursday...he was umpiring.
Goals Kickers
Aussie kicked in for 1, 'Rhys' Joel Argent kicked his first for the club, Mi Barker kicked a couple, The
Homewrecker/Maker also chimed in with two, Simon 'Balalalalalas!' (sung to La Bamba by Richie Valens) kicked
two rippers late, the Chimp kicked 3 snaps.
Best Players
Ronan Keating has become a bloody good Back Pocket, P Mally played a Stewie Loewe like game at CHF, Stefan
'The Dictator' Musolino has recaptured his 2010 form and got votes without playing on a broken leg, Dont be so
Karas was relentless, Daniel 'FranknFurter' Currie is getting better every week.
Best on the ground winning 2 jugs of beer...he won every hard ball there was, he backed up a BOG with another
run in the Chards, he needs a haircut and he was even sent off! Moly Moly Molyneux!
Stone's Man
Must be shared this week. 50% for evil and %50 for good. Evil Half goes to Chimp for creaming P Mally in a
marking contest that was heard in Athelstone. How did Mally get up? Dunno
Good Half goes to Mally for getting up...amazing...whilst still having the ball in his hands...sensational!
