The reverse design by Canadian big game sculptor Karl Lansing offers a sculptural celebration of an elusive hunter in the wild. Uniquely shaped to resemble a cougar (Puma concolor), this silver, gold-plated embellishment rises up from the coin’s surface for a stunning, multi-dimensional collecting experience. The cougar’s muscular appearance is on full display as it slinks close to the ground, its long tail gently curved behind it. While the paused movement belies the cougar’s ability to pounce with lightning-fast speed, it does allow for a rare view of this secretive species’ features, including finer details such as the texture of its fur.

The egg-shaped reverse design by Canadian artist Ann C. Morash weaves together patterns and symbols that capture the artistry of a Ukrainian Easter Egg. Positioned within four triangular segments are golden blades of wheat, which convey best wishes for harvest and the soul of the clan. Beneath this overlay, the field is filled with the geometric figures that represent the sun and stars, to symbolize life, fortune and growth. These are framed by bands of waves that celebrate water as a life-sustaining element and harmony, which are in turn framed by evergreen boughs positioned along the edge, to symbolize eternal health and youth. All are beautifully enhanced by the meticulous application of colours that each carry deeper meaning: yellow represents light and purity; red is the colour of joy and folklore; green is associated with fertility, health and spring, which brings hope and renewal; and black suggests the darkest time before dawn, and the idea of constancy and eternity.

The reverse design by Canadian artist Trevor Tennant transports the viewer to the mountainous landscape of Western Canada, where detailed engraving and multiple finishes recreate a timeless snapshot of the wild. The distant peaks provide a breathtaking backdrop to the grassy foothills, which slope down to the tree-lined river below; and while the beauty of the engraved scene is unmistakable, it is the uniquely shaped cutout that easily draws the viewer’s eye. Innovative technology has skilfully carved out the outline of a woodland caribou, smoothly recreating its distinctive profile and towering rack of antlers. The “missing” caribou element is strongly symbolic: while it represents an artistic tribute to a beloved species, the overall design also offers a haunting re-imagining of the Canadian wilderness without this national icon—particularly the Southern Mountain population of caribou, which is listed as threatened on Canada’s Species at Risk Act (SARA). The reverse includes the word “CANADA”, the year “2017” and the face value “30 DOLLARS”.

Designed by Canadian artist Joel Kimmel, the reverse offers a touching celebration of love through the elegant combination of detailed engraving, multiple finishes, and selective colour. The butterflies gaze at each other from atop a 6-millimetre, heart-shaped Swarovski® Branded crystal. The crystal itself is symbolic of the nature of love—not just for its shape but also for its sparkling light effect, which seems to brighten everything that surrounds these two souls in love. Both the crystal and the butterflies rise up from a large engraved coneflower (Echinacea), and are surrounded by butterfly bushes, coneflower blooms, and other butterflies in the background—including a distant Tiger swallowtail butterfly on the right.

This elusive, powerful yet social species is the special focus of the fourth coin in an ongoing series, which features enamel-enhanced portraits of Canada’s wildlife. The reverse design by Canadian artist Pierre Leduc features a detailed portrait of a timber wolf (Canis lupus occidentalis), also known as the Mackenzie Valley wolf. The colour effect adds a glowing intensity to each iris while darkening the pupils; breaking free from this locked gaze, a study of the wolf’s other facial features shows an outstanding amount of detail. Advanced finishing and shading techniques enhance the intricate engraving and provide a breathtaking sense of depth, texture and contrast to the wolf’s ears, nose, mouth and fur.

Canadians have a deep, enduring connection with nature that is evidenced by the many activities we enjoy outside throughout the year—summer, winter, rain or sun! This four-coin series explores a nation at play in our favourite playground, the Canadian landscape, beginning with a luminous re-creation of night conditions at a mountain ski resort.
The reverse design by Joel Kimmel combines life-like and stylized elements in this depiction of night skiing, where the view is truly breathtaking! Far from the grey, black and white that many associate with winter colours, the setting is dominated by the cool-toned hues of blue and purple cast by moonlight. The entire scene is further enhanced by the seamless integration of photo-luminescent (glow-in-the-dark) technology that mimics twilight; it softly illuminates the entire scene while adding a bright glow to the stars and moon overhead, the amber lights that edge the ski trails, even our skier’s run.

The reverse design by Pandora Young features an eye-catching combination of colour and engraving that results in a beautifully artistic rendition of the zodiac. Like the stars and planets in the sky, a clear Swarovski® crystal embellishment is in alignment with the traditional glyph of two fish swimming in opposite directions, which is the zodiac symbol for Pisces (February 20–March 20). At the centre is a larger Swarovski® crystal embellishment; its magenta colour also represents those born under the Water sign known for intuition, imagination and compassion. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
Based on a photograph taken by Canadian photographer Robert Hamilton, the reverse features vibrant colour over the detailed engraved image of a seaside setting in Prince Edward Island. The evening sun casts its golden light upon the landscape, where the island’s famously red rocks cast long shadows on the sand. On the grass-covered slope sits the province’s oldest wooden lighthouse, the Panmure Island Head, which was built in 1853 on the northeast shore of Panmure Island. The reverse also features the engraved word “CANADA” and the dates “1867-2017” to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Confederation.

Canadian artist Laurie McGaw has created a fun and uplifting collage of the places and things that make Cana-da great. Clockwise from the top: hockey sticks and puck, snowflakes, polar bear, inukshuk, Parliament Hill, Canadi-an flag, maple syrup, lighthouse, lobster traps, toboggan, Canada goose, canoe, beaver, moose, black spruce tree, Beaver plane, salmon, wheat, cowboy boot, mountains. The elements are roughly placed in an east/west/north/south orientation to reflect their location on a Canadian map. Together, they encircle a maple leaf that is the heart of the design—and the heart of this nation. Proudly engraved with “150 YEARS/ANS”.

The reverse design by Canadian artist John Mantha features a full-length portrait of the great explorer, Sir Alexander Mackenzie. Painstakingly engraved in meticulous detail, the scene captures Mackenzie’s expedition at the westernmost point of their transcontinental voyage, in a breathtaking inlet surrounded by rocky peaks. Here, the waters of the Pacific in the background seem to sparkle with a golden gleam, thanks to the coin’s surface and the polished finish. The entirety of the reverse boasts a high degree of historical accuracy—particularly in its depiction of the clothing worn by the voyageurs and the traditional cedar hat of the Nuxalk; the coin truly shines as an artistic piece, and an everlasting snapshot of a historic moment in Canadian history.ITEM: 156285

The reverse design by Claudio D’Angelo features a dog sled team riding out in the Canadian wilderness beneath the aurora borealis on a cold winter night. Nature’s silent hold on the wintry landscape is temporarily disrupted by the arrival of a dog sledding team, which infuses the cold air with barking and an infectious, almost boundless energy. There is no race here—just him and the solitude of the great outdoors, while the greenish hue of the aurora borealis dances overhead in the blue-black sky. It’s the Great White North at its grandest!

The reverse design by Canadian artist Derek C. Wicks combines finely detailed engraving, selective colour and diamond glitter to capture the majestic beauty of Canada’s northern coastline. In the foreground, an Arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea) is depicted in flight, its forked tail elongating its slender profile while its long wings are outstretched in an upward stroke. The tern prefers to nest in a colony; thus, it is depicted alongside two other terns depicted in different flight positions above the painted grey waters. While these engraved birds are exquisitely rendered, the Arctic scenery is equally captivating: in the background, the engraved iceberg sparkles in the light thanks to the sealed layer of fine diamond particles, which mimic the glacial ice’s glistening appearance.

The reverse design by Canadian artist Jamie Desrochers recreates two symbolic elements that are synonymous with the Halifax Explosion of 1917: SS Mont-Blanc, whose cargo was the source of the tragic explosion; and an explosion-damaged clock that was retrieved from the rubble. In the foreground is a partial portside view of SS Mont-Blanc—specifically her bow, which was struck by the Imo on the morning of December 6, 1917. The clock stands as a permanent reminder a moment frozen in time, its hands forever marking the moment of the explosion: 9:04 a.m.

Canadian artist Calder Moore has created a full-sized kaleidoscope design for the coin’s extra-large surface. Countless loons in myriad sizes come together in a complex pattern of amazing beauty, some face-to-face to create the outer ring of the design, while smaller birds stand rear-to-rear and upside-down to form the smaller rings towards the centre. The design is meticulously crafted with astounding detail, and beautifully enhanced with translucent colour to capture the reflective essence of a kaleidoscope. The colours are inspired by the loon’s feathers, its red eyes, and the fiery colours of a sunset that set the stage for its hallmark call.
Fifty years ago, the Royal Canadian Mint issued a special series of circulation coins that are now regarded as some of the most iconic Canadian coins of all time. The third coin in this continuing Big Coin series faithfully re-creates Alex Colville’s concept for the ten-cent coin from the 1967 Canadian Centennial circulation coins—albeit on a much larger scale.
The reverse re-creates the unforgettable 1967 10-cent circulation coin design by Canadian artist Alex Colville, and features the side profile of a mackerel. The image is enhanced by the application of selective gold plating over the mackerel and all along the coin’s rim.
