Navy Open Architecture
The US Navy is promoting and pursuing an Open Architecture that promotes interaction and portability between designers, suppliers, and end-users. With Open Architecture common standards and products are employed throughout ship systems (frameworks, middleware, operating systems, etc) reducing total cost of ownership, easing systems change and upgrades, and reducing compatibility and interoperability problems.
RTI Middleware is enabling OA throughout the US Navy.

CAE Flight Simulators

University of Iowa Driving Simulation Center and the US Army connected several high-fidelity simulators to test and evaluate passenger vehicles. They chose publish-subscribe over CORBA, DCOM and HLA, because it was easier to use and also was the most effective at controlling update rates, message ordering, data criticalities, and message latencies.

Flight Simulator Takes Off withRTI Data Distribution Service
For communications between full flight simulator subsystems, CAE, one of the world's leading providers of simulation and training, used RTI Data Distribution Service (formerly NDDS) over high-bandwidth IEEE-1394 on its Sim XXI product line. "In the past we probably would have developed an expensive, proprietary system for data communications. By using RTI Data Distribution Service (formerly NDDS) were able to deliver a proven, reliable and cost effective solution to our customers.“

Air Traffic Management
Finance
Air traffic service needed to control flow of traffic through busy metropolitan air space
Reliability is critical − hardware or software failures mean flight delays and substantial costs
RTI’s high performance permits the fast addition, updating and removal of system nodes without disrupting the data flow
RTI engaged to integrate, extend and design to the customer’s specific needs
Transportation
Highway Traffic Monitoring in Tokyo
The City of Tokyo needed a Metropolitan Highway Line traffic monitoring and information system. They developed a system that consisted of a central information-control center and hundreds of information kiosks scattered along the highway system. A data-distribution communications system was needed to deliver constant updates to the kiosks and to gather traffic condition data in the control center. RTI Data Distribution Service is used to help them deliver the system on time and on spec.
