InternationalNewsWehadseventeenMarryatvilleHighSchoolstudentsandthreeGrantHighSchoolstudentsvisitingSojaMinami,oursisterschoolinJapan,forthelastthreeweeks.MrBryceWoodleyandMsJoRichardsaccompaniedthesestudentsonthetrip.Thestudentshavereturnedhomeandfromallaccountshadaveryenjoyabletime.

Thisyeartwostaff,MrManuelPontikinasandMrCarlMatthewswillspendfourweeksatWeiYuMiddleSchoolinShanghai.WeiYuisoneofoursisterschoolsinChina.

WearecurrentlyworkingonanotherexcitinginitiativefollowingavisitearlierthisyearfromadelegationofleadersfromVietnam.VietnamhasagreedtohostfourstaffinHanoiforfourweeks.ThiswilloccurinlateNovember/December.

FutureProblemSolvingNationalFinalsTheMiddleDivisionteamfromMarryatvilleHighSchoolhasbeeninvitedtoparticipateintheNationalFinalstobeheldatMelbourneUniversityfromFriday15thOctobertoSunday17thOctober2010(i.e.attheendofweek1,term4).Thereare4studentsintheteamwith2reserveswhowilljoinalternateteams(i.e.willcompetewithstudentsfromotherschools)attheFinals.Thisisthesixthyearthatourteamshavereceivedaninvitation.In2006and2008,theFinalswerealsoheldinMelbourne.

SiteLearningPlanTheschooliscurrentlyreviewingtheongoingSiteLearningPlan.JenniHenzell,aformerteacheratMarryatvilleHighSchoolisworkingwithmembersofGoverningCouncilandstafftolookatprioritiesforthenext3yearplan.Asurveyisbeingpreparedandparentandstudentconsultationwilloccuroverthenextfewmonths.InformationgatheredthroughthisconsultationwillbeusedtoidentifytheSiteLearningPlan2011–2013.Thisisanimportantdocumentthatidentifiesanddrivestheschool’sdirectionandmeasuresoutcomesachieved.Thissurveywillbeon-lineandallparentsareinvited,andindeed,encouragedtoparticipate.

ExpandingStateHighSchoolsTheschooliscontinuingtoexplorethisopportunity.TheAssetManagementGrouphasagreedonthemajorsiteprioritiesandasmallgrouphashadseveralmeetingswiththeDepartmentofEducation&Children’sServicesrepresentatives.TwoarchitectshavevisitedtheschoolandameetingisplannedtoinviteLearningArearepresentativestomeetwiththem.Followingthismeetingsomeconceptplanswillbedrawnup.GoverningCouncilwillcontinuetomonitorthisprocessandkeepthecommunityinformed.

ParentForumOnthe9thSeptemberaParentInformationForumentitled“CopingwithSchoolandAdolescence”showcasedarangeofexpertguestspeakerswhoprovidedinformationontopicssuchasAdolescentEating,Sleeping,MentalHealth,RelationshipsandInternetSafety.TheforumalsofeaturedstudentpresentationsonthesetopicsincludingtheresultsofaMarryatvilleHighSchoolStudentSurvey.FeedbackfromparentswhoattendedwasoverwhelminglypositiveanditislikelythatsuchforumswillbecomearegularfeatureontheMarryatvilleHighSchoolcalendar.

forafunctionanddisplaycompetenceinteamwork,managementandorganisation.Thetaskgivesstudentsawonderfulopportunitytodisplayleadership,initiativeandworkinteams.

OnWednesday18thAuguststudentsfromoneclasscateredforaninternationalteacher’slunchof40guestswhichwashighlycommendedandenthusiasticallyreceived.ArangeofhotandcoldAsiandishesinabuffetstyleservicewereservedintheHomeEconomicsCentre.

Thecommitmentofeachstudentwasoutstandingandresultedinahighlysuccessfulevent.SomeofthedishesservedincludedSatayBeefskewers,PortandVegetarianSpringRolls,PrawnColdRolls,SmokedSalmonSushiRolls.

OnWednesday8thSeptemberparentsfromthesecondFoodandHospitalityclasswereinvitedtotheHomeEconomicsCentrefora3courseeveningmeal.Thestudentsworkedinsmallgroupsonbusinessaspectsofthefunctionandwereallinvolvedinthefoodpreparationandfoodserviceonthenight.ThemenuincludedGoat’sCheeseSoufflewithaCapsicumRelish,MoroccanAfroBBQChickenwithSpicyPotatoesandRedWinePoachedPearswithPortuguese-styleRicePudding.Theeveningranfaultlesslyduetothehardworkanddedicationofallstudents.

Wewouldliketothanktheparentsfortheirattendance,criticalfeedbackandsupport.

TownHallConcertThisyear’sTownHallConcertwasagreatsuccess.Studentsandstaffdidafantasticjobpreparingandrehearsingforthebigevent.EveniftimerestrictionsmeantthatweareunabletohighlighteverythingthatisfantasticabouttheSIMCinoneevening,theconcertgavetheaudiencetheopportunitytohearourSeniorEnsemblesandexcellentmusicianship.AnaudiencefavouritethisyearwasPopsVocalEnsemble’srenditionofSomebodytoLovebyFreddieMercury.TheConcertBandunderthebatonofRegChapman,demonstratednewvigourwithashowstopperfeaturingtheduellingxylophonesofAmeliaJutilane-MaynardandAndrewChan.FederalLaborCandidateRicSarrecongratulatedtheMusicfacultyfortheconcert,commentingaboutthefantasticstringsoundoftheSchoolOrchestra.“…whatstoodoutwastheenergyandbrillianceofthelastdanceoftheBorodin,especiallythepowerofthestrings.Wow.”

EarlyMusicEnsemble-ShedleyTheatre

Fremont-ElizabethCityHighSchool–ArtsShowcaseThefourSIMCsdecidedthisyeartotakepartineachother’smajorconcerts.ItwasMarryatville’sturntotravelupnorth.TheEarlyMusicensemble,directedbyKatrinaBrownmadetheirwaytotheShedleyTheatreinElizabethwithtransportationsuppliedbyparents.TheArtsShowcasehighlightedalloftheArtsareasintheschool’scurriculum.Otherthanmusictherewerepresentationsandinputtotheeveningbythefacultiesofdance,drama,media,andvisualarts.OurstudentsperformedaConcertobyHaydn.

LauncestonChurchGrammarSchoolOnWednesdaySeptember1st,wehadtheprivilegeofhostingmusicstudentsfromtheLauncestonChurchGrammarSchool.TheyarrivedinthemorningtohaveabitofrehearsaltimeandgetusedtotheacousticofthePerformanceArea.Theythenheldanopenrehearsalfortheyear10musicstudents.Anopenrehearsalgavetheirteachersanopportunitytofinessesomepiecesandtogivestudentsanopportunityofanotherrunthroughbeforeperforming.Anopenrehearsalsituationalsogaveouryear10stheopportunitytoviewtherehearsalprocessfromtheconductor’spointofview–toseethatthesamerehearsal

techniquesusedonthem,areuniversallyemployedaspartofgoodteachingpractice.Studentswerealsoinvitedtoprovidecriticalfeedbackwithsuggestionsonhowtheensemblecouldimprovetheirplaying.Afterrecesstheschoolpresentedafullconcerttotheyear8musicstudents.Theperformanceincludedastringensemble,astagebandwithsinger,achoir,andaconcertbandplayingavarietyofmusic.

DirectorofMusicLauncestonChurchGrammar,BarryDudgeonconductingtheorchestra.

Mozart’sRequiemOnSaturdaythe4thofSeptemberfourofourstudentswerepartoftheorchestrathatperformedintheAdelaideHarmonyChoir’sconcertofMozartworks.JacquelineCarias,MatthiasFresacher,KitTonkinandJoshuaOatesperformedadmirablyalongsideprofessionalsmusicians.FormerstudentsEmilyWong,TimRosenandSebastianTonkin,alongwithteachersKerryHewettandJosieHawkeswerealsointheorchestra.TheorchestraperformedMozart’sSymphonyNoIinEflatmajor,whichishisfirstsymphony,composedwhenhewasonlyeightyearsold.ThiswasfollowedbythepopularOverturetoTheMagicFlute.AfterintermissiontheaudiencewaspresentedwithaworldpremiereperformanceofaneweditionofMozart’sRequiem.ThisworkwasnotcompletedwhenMozartdiedandwasposthumouslycompletedbyacomposercalledSüssmayr.Therehavebeensomeotherrevisionsoftheworkbyothers,butthisscore,completedbyAdelaidemusicologistLethoKostoglou,triestofillinthemissingsectionwithamoreauthenticMozartstyleofcomposition.SoloistsforthisperformancewereformerstudentRobertMacfarlaneandfriendofthemusiccentreKeithHempton.

TheThreeChoirsandChamberOrchestraoftheElderConservatoriumofMusicOnSaturdaySeptember11ththeThreeChoirsandChamberOrchestraoftheElderConservatoriumofMusicperformedafantasticconcertatStPeter’sCathedral.AwonderfulselectionofmusicwaspresentedbyAdelaideVoices(theConservatoriumschamberchoir),BellaVoce(Women’schoir),ElderConservatoriumChoraleandtheChamberOrchestra.

SouthernJazzClubAdelaideJazzaficionadoshavelongseentheSouthernJazzClubasanardentsupporterofJazzmusiciansaswellas

theseeventsandhastakentheopportunitytointroduceourstudentstoliveperformingatthesegigs.Year8studentDavidGoodwinhasperformedattheclubnumeroustimesandisgainingareputationasafinejazzpianistandimproviser.LastweektheSouthernJazzClubawardedDavidGoodwintheinauguralKenWayAward.ItispresentedbyKen’sdaughter,SandraandherhusbandGeoffGogler.KenwasapastPresidentandPatronoftheSouthernJazzClubIncandhestartedtheYouthJazzWorkshops.Theawardispresentedto“ayoungjazzmusicianwhoshowsoutstandingpromiseeitherplayingintheSJCYouthWorkshopBandorinoneoftheseveralSchoolbandsthathaveperformedattheClubduringtheyear”.Theawardisrepresentedbyaperpetual;Trophyandapersonaltrophytotheawarded.

MarryatvilleHighSchoolthankstheSouthernJazzClubfortheirsupportofjazzinawardssuchasthese,andtheoverallencouragementofyoungjazzmusicians.

HeadofMusicvisitsVictorianmusicschoolsAttheendofweeksixIhadtheprivilegeofvisitingtwospecialistmusicschoolsinMelbourne:BlackburnHighSchoolandTheVictoriaCollegeofArtsSecondarySchool.Bothoftheseschoolsarepublicschoolsbut

eachisrunverydifferently.BlackburnHighiswellknownbyMarryatvillestudentsbecauseofourpastbattlesonthestageoftheGenerationsinJazzcompetitionsinMtGambier.

Blackburnisaregularhighschool,butsourcesextrafundingforitsmusicprogram,becauseitprovidesthebiggestmusicprograminitsschoolregion.UnlikeMarryatville,Blackburnisprovidedfundstoemployitsowninstrumentalmusicstaff,andsohastheabilitytochoosethestaffitrequiresincludingensembledirectorsandtutors.Blackburnisonthebrinkofamajorrebuildingprogramwhichwillsee80%ofitsbuildingsupgraded.Blackburnensemblesregularlytournationallyandinternationallyandisrespectedforitsmusicalandacademicsuccesses.

TheVCASecondarySchoolbeganasasub-schoolofthetertiaryartsinstitution,theVCA.Lastyearitcutitstiesandbecameadepartmenthighschoolinitsownright.ItprovidesspecialisteducationinMusicandDanceandstudentsauditionforplacesattheschoolformalloverMelbourne.TheseniormusicstudentstouredtoAdelaidelastyearandwehadthewonderfulopportunitytoperformwiththemintwoconcerts.VCASSisintheenviablepositionofbeingaspecialistinstitutionratherthanaregularhighschoolandsoeverystudentishighlymotivatedtoachieveandprogressasmusicians.Entrytoyear7and8islimitedtoabout10studentsperyearandtherearetwowaitinglistsofstudentspreparedtostartattheschoolimmediately.Byyear12theclassesareusuallyabout25insizeandthewholemusicstudentcohortisabout100.Allstaff,includinginstrumentalteachersandensembledirectorsareemployedbytheschool.Theonlydrawbacktosuchlowstudentnumbersisthatthesizeandtypeofensemblesislimited.Theyhavehighlevelchambergroupsandmidsizedensembles,butnosymphonyorchestraorfullstageband.

DuringmyvisittotheseschoolsImanagedtogainmuchinsighttotheinnerworkingsoftheseschool,includingcurriculumdevelopmentandintegrationifICT.Ihavesolidifiedourlinksandwehavediscussedwaysinwhichwewillbeabletoworktogetherandsharewitheachotherinthefuture.WewillbeawaitingthereleaseoftheArtssectionoftheNationalCurriculumanditsramificationsonmusiceducationinAustraliaasaunifiedbodyofspecialisteducators.

DarcyCallus–Superstar(…almost)TwoweeksagoformerstudentDarcyCallussurpriseduswithavisittothemusicstaffroom.Heaskedwhetherornotwehadreadthenewspaper.Wesaidthatwehadalreadyhadthearticleabouthiminourscrapbook.DarcywasofcoursereferringtohisactivitiesontheTVshow“Xfactor”.HesaidthathehadbeentoNewYork,butwouldnotgiveusanymoreinformation.Hedid,however,haveagrinliketheCheshireCatandwasextremelyexcited.Bynow,thosewhohavewatchedtheshowhavediscoveredthathedidnotmakeittotheliveshows,buthedidimpressthejudgeswithhistalentinhisfirstperformance.CriticaljudgeKyleSanderlandsdidsaythatDarcyhadthepotential“tomakethemalotofmoney”.Intheend,Darcywasnotwhattheshowwaslookingfor,butluckilyforushehasthepotentialtostillbecomeanoutstandingmusicianandperformer.

ThepurposeofthissessionwastopreparesuccessfulNYSFstudentsforthetwoweeksineitherCanberraorPerthduringJanuarynextyear.

IalsogotthechancetoliaisewithRotaryrepresentatives,professors,doctors,scienceteachersandother2011NYSFstudentsfromRotaryDistricts9500and9520.

Theorientationsessionwasalsoacelebrationofsuccess,asallselectedNYSFstudentshadtoovercomeagruelingselectionprocessinordertoattendtheforuminJanuary2011.

IamanxiouslylookingforwardtoattendingtheNYSFinCanberranextJanuary.Itwillbeagreatopportunityformetoignitemypassionforscience,connectwithmy

In2009DanielAttanasiowaspartoftheMarryatvilleHighSchoolOperationFlindersprogram.AsaresultofhisachievementsaspartofthisprogramhewaschosentobetrainedasaPeerGuidanceMentortootheryoungpeopleintheprogram.

DanielthisyearhascompletedsignificanttraininginthisroleandhastravelledtotheFlindersRangestoassistwiththisyear’sprogram.
