PENTECOST

Those who are led y the

Spirit of God

Are sons of God.

You did not receive a spirit of

slavery to fall back into fear,

but you received a Spirit of

adoption, through whem we cry,

“ABBA, FATHER!”

The Spirit himself bears witness

with our spirit

That we are Children of God,

and if children,

then heirs, heirs of God and

joint heirs with Christ…..

ST. JAMES CATHOLIC PARISH MAY 15,2016

WORDS FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Brother and Sisters:

The Holy Spirit! Most of us rec-

ognize a person who has

spirit! Most of us recognize a holy person, even if

we have met such a person only once in our

lives. Probably many of us would say that we have

never had a direct experience of the Holy Spirit in our lives, even

if we have been confirmed. Let us look at the readings again to

listen to what is being said.

The first reading, from the Acts of the Apostles, gives an account

of the first experience of Christian Pentecost. We can reflect on

this experience: a noise like a strong, driving wind; tongues of

fire, separated and over each one present; speaking in differ-

ent languages; hearing in different languages. We are not given

an answer to how many Christians were gathered together or to

what their own feelings were about this descent of the Spirit. The

focus seems more on the work of God than on the feelings of the

people present—although it is clear that there was wonderment.

The second reading is from the First

Letter to the Corinthians. This pas-

sage wants to remind us that there are

many gifts of the Holy Spirit and

that such gifts are given for some

benefit—not to draw attention to the

person with the gifts.

The Gospel of John shows Jesus giving the Spirit to His disciples.

This Spirit is to forgive sins—but also to retain sins. This is a

complex gifts and immediately makes us aware that the Spirit is

not a gentle Spirit but a strong Spirit that draws us to God or tells

us that we are not ready to move to God yet!

Each of us needs to reflect on his or her experience of the Spirit.

Lots of us never think much about the Spirit in our lives. From the

readings today, however, we can see clearly that the Spirit is not

something just for ourselves. No, the Spirit

is meant to draw me to serve others, to

help others, to pray for others, to forgive

others. There are so many ways to do

this! That is why there are so many gifts of

the Spirit.

This is the day of Pentecost and each of us

should ask the Holy Spirit to come into us,

into our hearts and minds, to transform

us more completely into the image of Je-

sus Christ. The role of the Spirit is always about Jesus. The

Spirit gives us the same message as Jesus. The Spirit deepens our

knowledge of Jesus. Whenever we feel any impulse to know Jesus

more or to spend time with Jesus, we can recognize that the Spirit

is active in us. When we are drawn to love for the sake of the

Gospel, then the Spirit is active in us. When we want to do the

right thing in whatever we are doing, that also is the Spirit in us.

Come, Holy Spirit, put your fire in our hearts. Draw us to love

the Lord and to love all others. Amen.

THE GREAT GIFT OF PENTECOST

The Church of course reads the Acts of the Apostles exclusively during the Easter Season, the great book which narrates how the Holy Spirit worked in the first graced days of the life of the Church.

On Ascension Thursday the Church proclaims Christ’s promise in Acts 1: You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses.

The rest of the book of Acts tells the story of the fulfillment of Christ’s promise. Read Acts of the Apostles straight through—it has always proved to be a transforming experience. It is filled with so many stories of courage, trust, and power, as well as fascinating historical and geographical detail. Each night at Vespers (Evening Prayer) the Church gives us a short reading from the New Testament about the Holy Spirit.

Saint Paul tells us we are God’s children, crying out “Abba, Father!” and learning how to pray in the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8). The great Apostle to the Gen-tiles also tells us of the Wisdom that comes from on high and that the Spirit makes our bodies holy temples (1 Corinthians 2 and 6). He instructs us to bring forth the fruits of the Spirit in our lives (Galatians 5).

The revised Roman Missal gives the beautiful option of an extended Vigil of Pente-cost, and the chosen readings can also guide our prayer as the Church points out to her children the prefigurements of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament: the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11), the Fire of God on Mount Sinai (Exodus 19), the prophecy of Eze-

kiel about the dry bones coming to life (Ezekiel 37), and the prophecy of Joel that the Lord will pour his Spirit upon all mankind (Joel 3). In response to these the Church prays the great Psalms of the Holy Spirit, primarily Psalm 104, which she prayed at the beginning of the Great Vigil of Easter: “Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth!” Other psalms included in the liturgy of Pentecost are:

Psalm 33 – The Spirit of the Lord fills the whole world

Psalm 107 – “His love endures forever”

And the canticle of the three young men in the fiery furnace giving praise to God (Daniel 3)

Lastly and most importantly, the Church as always entrusts us to the care of the Virgin Mary, who joined the Apostles in prayer in the Upper Room as they awaited the coming of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1). The Church prays at the Vigil of Pentecost, “Like them, let us, too, listen with quiet hearts to the Word of God.” The Word gives us new birth in the Holy Spirit, and under Mary’s intercession we ask the Lord to “sanctify your whole Church in every people and nation.” May she, the Woman clothed with the sun, kindle in our hearts the fire of God’s love and so renew the face of the earth! Come, Holy Spirit!!

PENTECOST SUNDAY………..…….……………………………………......…….MAY 15 2016

Prayer To the Holy Spirit Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful and kindle in them the fire of Your love.

Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created; and You shall renew the face of the earth.

O God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful,

grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations,

Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
