Chief Gellatly introduces “Community Oriented Policing” concept in 1991.Citizens Police Academy (CPA) established in 1991.Volunteers in Policing(VIP) program becomes an extension of the CPA program.First CPA class graduates in March, 1992.First VIP starts working within Savannah Police Department in June 1992.

Current Program Two 13-week

sessions annually

Covers everything from department history to tactical training to a patrol ride-along

Pre-requisite for VIP program

VIPs required to re-take course every three years

Mission The mission of the VIP program is to motivate the citizens of the Savannah-Chatham area to become involved with SCMPD and share in the responsibility of policing their community.
