Shortly after Orange County was created in 1889, the Orange County Community Fair Corporation was formed. This group put on a small fair in 1890 that included a horse race and a few exhibits in Santa Ana. In 1894, another group, the Orange County Fair Association, Inc., took over
The first Orange County Fairs were primarily livestock exhibitions and horse races. At the turn of the century, a “carnival of products” was added and the Fair became an annual event. In ensuing years, the Fair was held in Santa Ana, but after World War I it was moved to Huntington Beach for two years and then back to temporary grounds on East Fruit Street in Santa Ana.
In 1916, the Fair was taken over by the newly organized Orange County Farm Bureau. The first OC Fair Board was elected in 1925 and the Fair re-
located to Anaheim, across the street from the Orange County Hospital. In 1925, a rodeo and carnival were added to the Fair.
OC Fair Clowns After World War II, the state formed the 32nd District Agricultural Association and made it responsible for the Fair. The state
then purchased land occupied by the Santa Ana Army Air Base and some of it was earmarked for a new fairground. The Fair was first held at the new site in 1949 and it soon was designated as the permanent Fair-grounds. In 1953, the City of Costa Mesa was incorporated - the new
city included the Fair’s location. From 1949 to the present, the OC Fair has grown from a small, community, five-day celebration to a 23-day festival that is one of Orange County’s most eagerly awaited annual events.

temporary closure of forster ranch ridgeline trail and san Juan capistrano trail
Beginning on Tues-day, July 10, 2012, FORE Engineering Con-struction will close the San Juan Capistrano trail (Camino De Los Mares trail entrance) for 7 days and the For-ster Ranch Ridgeline Trail will also close for approximately 30-60 days while the County of Orange completes a water line project in the landfill area. This construction was set to begin in late May, but was postponed.
Once work is complete at the Camino De Los Mares trail entrance, FORE will reopen the trail (point A to B on the map). The Forster Ranch Ridge-line Trail will remain closed from point A to point C until work is complete through that section.
During the construction work, there will be no connection to the San Juan Capistrano trails from San Clemente’s Forster Ridgeline Trail. Additionally, access from the end of Camino De Los Mares will be limited. To identify the locations of the trail closure for the public, construction fencing and trail closure signage will be installed at the trail entrance points and other areas of the trail system.
It is important that the public respects the trail closure during this time. Once the area is cleared by the County of Orange, its staff will make an effort to reopen San Clemente’s Forster Ranch Ridgeline Trail and the trail portion in San Juan Capistrano.

Pacific Chorale’s annual Choral Festival will return in August 2012, bringing together choral singers from the Southern California community and beyond in a free public performance of choral masterworks.

Enjoy “Spanish Nights and Ameri-can Flair” in Irvine (for the first time in the Great Park), Lake Forest and Mission Viejo, plus pre-concert entertainment including Musical Play-ground for kids; and a food drive
Featuring guitar ensemble Triada, the program includes light Spanish-flavored and American pops and classical tunes, plus popular patriotic songs
Grab a lawn chair, pack a picnic and head to a nearby park for an evening of free outdoor music and entertain-ment when Pacific Symphony’s 2012 Target Symphony in the Cities (SITC) concert series celebrates summer with a mix of American and Spanish music (and more)! For the eighth year in a row, Target returns as the title spon-sor for this popular event, which at-tracts thousands of people annually to parks throughout Orange County. This year’s concerts, “Spanish Nights and American Flair,” led by Music Director Carl St.Clair, take place in three cities: Mission Viejo’s Oso Viejo Park (July 28), Irvine’s Orange County Great Park (July 29) and Lake Forest’s Pittsford Park (Aug. 19). Featuring the popular guitar group Triada, the program offers light, Spanish-infused classical and pop music by Rodrigo and Bizet, favorite patriotic songs and a little Tchaikovsky for good measure. For more informa-tion about these concerts, call (714) 755-5799 or visit PacificSymphony.org/SITC.
“To complement our traditional Tar-get Symphony in the Cities patriotic sing-along, marches and, of course, the unforgettable moment when the children help me conduct the concert, we are pleased to offer an evening of
Spanish-influenced music!” says Music Director Carl St.Clair. “From the sizzling overture to Bizet’s beloved opera ‘Car-men’ and the dances of the Farandole, to the famous Triada guitar quartet, we will have the audience smiling and tapping their toes! It will be another great time under our beautiful California summer sky!”
For this evening of cool American favorites and hot Latin rhythms, the Symphony welcomes the brilliant guitar ensemble Triada, which combines the unique talents of Bulgarian brothers Nikola, Petar and Vasil and their sister Petya Chekardzhikov. Individually, the family members are virtuoso guitarists and their intuitive sense of synergy makes their performances appealing and unique. Triada tackles Latin-flavored gems such as Farandole from “L’Arlesienne,” Suite No. 2 and tasty morsels from Bizet’s alluring “Carmen.” The audience is also treated to Triada performing a special arrangement of Rodrigo’s “Concierto andaluz” for four guitars. Plus, the concert includes selections from Tchaikovsky’s “Nut-cracker,” John Philip Sousa’s rousing “Hands Across the Sea,” a salute to our armed forces and a patriotic sing-along.
All concerts get underway at 7 p.m., with the Symphony’s pre-concert Musical Playground, featuring many interactive and hands-on activities for children (including making an instru-ment, playing in a drum circle, visiting an instrument petting zoo and meeting Symphony musicians) beginning at 5:30 p.m. (in Irvine and Lake Forest); Mission Viejo’s “Prelude in the Park,” begins at 4 p.m. and offers an array of pre-concert festivities, with the Sym-
phony’s Musical Playground beginning at 4:30 p.m.
Prior to the concert—and back by popular demand—children are invited to take part in a conducting workshop led by Maestro St.Clair at 6:45 p.m., in preparation for assisting him lead Sousa’s “Hands Across the Sea” during the concert. Also, fourth- and fifth-grade students from Santa Ana Summer Strings (a new violin program that is the result of a partnership between Pacific Symphony, Santa Ana Unified School District and the academic sup-port program, THINK Together) are providing pre-concert entertainment at the Great Park.
Attendees are encouraged to pack a few cans of food along with their picnic and help support neighbors in need. Look for donation barrels in each park: in Mission Viejo, South County Outreach in partnership with the City of Mission Viejo is planning to be on hand to accept donations; at the Great Park and in Lake Forest, Orange County Food Bank is accepting donations.

They can then say, ʼI can be like that, my life can change, too.ʼ”

It is diffi cult to believe that hunger exists in Orange County. Most people think of hunger in terms of famine and mass starvation, terrible tragedies; not something that affects people every day in our own community.
Hunger in our community is often more subtle. It’s a child who stuffs his pockets during lunch at school so he has food to eat at home in the evening. It’s a parent who is ironically overweight, because sugar and carbohydrate-laden foods are often the least expensive at the local store. It’s a senior citizen who goes without food in order to buy medicine, further jeopardizing their already fragile health.
The reality is that there are hungry people in Orange County. Family Assistance Ministries of South Orange County (FAM) was founded in 1999 by Ellen Gilchrist to continue to accommodate families that the Episcopal Service Alliance could no longer serve. They started with 135 and now they provide assistance to nearly 2,000 people every month; half of these are children and the elderly.
The newest bakery in San Clemente, Oh For Sweets Sake at 111 Avenida Palizada in Old City Plaza, is teaming up with FAM, and will sponsor a canned food drive that will run July 1st through July 31st.
Folks can bring a canned or boxed good and save $1 on a single treat or bring in 2 food items to save $3 on a six-pack. Donations received through the drive will help FAM feed those in need throughout South Orange County. Food items that are being accepted are cans of food of any kind and box food like macaroni and cheese, etc. (No glass items please)
A contribution means much needed help, and hope, will be available to those who need it. Your generosity makes a difference. Your donation makes a difference!

1st annual “wine & dine” Benefit for laura’s
house nets $15,000 Overlooking the Golf Course at Big Canyon Country Club in New-
port Beach, around 100 guests were treated to culinary delights and tastings of wines from wine-growing regions throughout California all to benefit Laura’s House, a nonprofit whose mission is to change the social beliefs, attitudes and behaviors that perpetuate domestic violence. The 1st Annual Wine & Dine event was a successful hit where guests dressed in “summer chic” attire. They were treated to an array of gourmet delights as they perused the silent auction Wine Wall, tasted wine selections from more than 30 wineries situated throughout California’s wine growing regions, and received expert advice on choosing wines from Master Sommelier Steve Poe, of Big Canyon Country Club.
“We are very excited that our first annual ‘Wine & Dine’ event was such a great success, and we are thankful to those who joined us for a beautiful evening in Newport Beach,” said Margaret Bayston, CEO and Executive Director, Laura’s House. “The event helped us raise the much needed funds we need to support the programs and services for families who are impacted by domestic violence, while shining a light on this issue that affects so many individuals throughout the Orange County community.”
Among the items featured on the gourmet menu for the 1st Annual Wine & Dine event were a selection of passed hors d’oeuvres includ-ing braised cocktail meatballs with Manchego cheese, pine nuts and spicy tomato sauce, and truffle and goat cheese beignets. Stationed menu items included imported and domestic cheese display with charcuteries, dried cranberries, peaches and walnuts; panzanella salad; asparagus, mushroom, parmesan and Italian sausage risotto; smoked scallop sliders with lime, arugula, greens and citrus aioli; open-faced prosciutto and Jarlsberg “Sandwich” with Granny Smith apples and watercress on rustic bread; goat cheese stuffed pep-padew peppers with chimichurri sauce; Mexican bay shrimp cocktail with avocado and lime in an Asian spoon.
The silent auction included wine tastings and tour experiences for Giracci Vineyards & Farms, Newport Beach Vineyards & Winery and AmByth Estate; a Wine Dinner at Canaletto Newport Beach; and, a Wine Wall including more than 100 bottles of wine from the Napa Valley, Sonoma Coast, Paso Robles and other wine growing regions around the world.
Proceeds from the 1st Annual Wine & Dine event will be used support the programs and services that Laura’s House provides to families that are impacted by domestic violence throughout Orange County and beyond.
Over the past eighteen years, Laura’s House has provided resi-dential shelter and support services to nearly 3,500 families, and counseling, life skills education and legal assistance to over 40,000 individuals. The mission of Laura’s House is to change the social beliefs, attitudes and the behaviors that perpetuate domestic vio-lence while creating a safe space in which to empower individuals and families affected by abuse.
