• Technology has radically transformed the ways in which we communicate with one another and access information for decision‐making purposes.

• It logically follows that accessibility to scholarship information for college‐bound students has also evolved.

• While exploring colleges of interest, be sure to take a look at their scholarships/grants, requirements and deadlines.

• Be certain to open all mail from colleges … some may include scholarship details – Many schools use these to  recruit candidates.

• In fact … When you receive your financial aid packages from your colleges, it usually includes additional scholarship opportunities available for institutional aid.

Watch out for Scams! Rule of thumb …Do not PAY for any

Be organized. Stay on top of deadlines, gather all documents, and make copies of everything you submit. It’s a good idea to send your applications by certified mail to make sure they’re received.

Scholarship Application Tips

Be honest. Don't exaggerate your grades, memberships, skills, or qualifications. You’re more likely to receive scholarships if you focus on the ones that match your interests and skills.

Follow instructions carefully. Some scholarships require you to write an essay while others may want letters of recommendation. Send in what’s requested and proofread everything. Typos and missing materials can cost you a scholarship.

Counselors will visit senior classes tomorrow to distribute the Scholarship Bulletin & the General Scholarship Application (Green Sheet).

Immediately following these presentations, I will send a ConnectEd email message confirming that the Scholarship Bulletin & the General Scholarship Application (Green Sheet) have been distributed. I will also post both documents on the SHS website (under Counseling Office quick link).

Local Scholarship Process

35

The Green Sheet is used to apply to scholarships that will be decided through the Southampton High School Scholarship Committee (attending to the criteria established by the participating organizations). This committee is comprised of faculty members representing a diversity in terms of curricular areas and breadth of knowledge of student body (teachers, coaches, advisors, counselors)

Scholarship applications for other local scholarships will be available in the Counseling Office. Students need to adhere to the instructions (in the bulletin) for submission. These individual organizations determine the criteria and use their own process for selection.

36

The General Scholarship Applications are due in the Counseling Office

NO LATER THAN Friday, March 8th at 2:33pm.

*All applications must be date- and time-stamped

(in the Counseling Office) to be considered "submitted"

(Late applications will not be accepted!!)

37

Every effort is made by the SHS Scholarship Committee to distribute the

scholarships among the senior class.

• The decisions are driven by strict alignment to criteria established by each organization.

• Students are responsible to submit their best work in a timely manner and apply for as many scholarships as they qualify. (Some students will qualify for more scholarships than other students based on their involvement in particular activities, unique talents, etc.)
