SCL Conference 2014 Responding to Change
In Partnership with
Conference Summary
It has been another phenomenal twelve months
at SCL, as partners, customers and prospects
heard at the ‘Responding to Change’ conference,
held in London recently. The conference was in
partnership with Cash Management Solutions,
International Reference Systems and Money-
Gram.
Several key initiatives have ensured that SCL
continues to meet customer needs, stays well
ahead of competitors and keeps pushing the
boundaries in the FX and Prepaid markets
worldwide.
A major project for TUI was to integrate online
sales with their retail POS, giving a totally holistic
view of their Foreign Exchange and Prepaid
Travel Money Card transactions. TUI branches can
now be informed of orders placed online for
in-store collection and manage their stock
accordingly. The site is branded Thomson Travel
Money but hosted and maintained by SCL.
New integration with the prepaid card processor
Blackhawk Network gave a significant up lift in
sales for a US based shopping mall customer
ahead of Christmas 2013. The ability to move
from a single open loop product to a variety of
open and closed loop cards is now also available
in the UK.
Staying ahead in security is obviously vital, so
SCL’s new Quality Security Assessor partner now
undertakes monthly (minimum) penetration test-
ing and on-going security checks to keep SCL cer-
tified as a PCI DSS Level One service provider.
Add to all this a range of new upgrades including: up-dated Firewall infrastructure, reducing the number of versions of UltraPoS, replacing all Active Directory hardware and it’s clear that 2013 and early 2014 have been periods of real achievement.
RESPONDING TO CHANGE KEEPS SCL
AHEAD OF THE GAME
Mark Crowson, Business Development Director at
MoneyGram spoke at the conference and outlined
the partnership approach taken with SCL to
integrate their money transfer functionality with
UltraPoS.
MoneyGram is the second largest money transfer
company in the world, with 336,000 outlets in 201
countries and 2013 revenues over $1.5bn.
Headquartered in Dallas Texas, it employs 2,500
people worldwide, including 500 people in
compliance.
The certification of the MoneyGram service means
that mutual customers can now sell all of their
financial products from a single instance of
UltraPoS.
Other cashier benefits include the elimination of
double keying, leading to a reduction in errors,
much quicker transaction times and reduced
consumer queuing. And…..happy cashiers mean
increased revenues.
MONEYGRAM PARTNERSHIP APPROACH
BRINGS BIG BENEFITS
3
In the ever increasing fight against money
laundering and in response to growing pressure
from HMRC, SCL is in a unique position to offer a
UK national service for Velocity Checking.
But, WE NEED YOUR HELP to tells us what you
think and how important it is to your business.
Velocity Checking is the analysis of purchasing
patterns of an individual and their transactions to
identify irregular or potentially fraudulent trends.
It can be employed on websites, payment
gateways, shop’s PoS and in financial institutions.
An individual person can be identified by their
names, the payment card number, email address,
ID number or telephone number.
Explains Ray Stanton, CEO of SCL: “Due to the fact
that SCL processes FX and Prepaid card
transactions for so many high street stores and
shopping mall outlets, we are in a unique position
to establish a nationwide service for all our
customers.
I think it is inevitable that this will come, so we
could accelerate our software development soon,
if we know there is a large enough demand now.
That’s why we need to hear your views, please. So
far, everyone I have spoken to thinks it is a must
have.”
Please give us your views by sending an email to
velocity@scluk.com or calling Patrick Roe on
01273 666604.
VELOCITY CHECKING: TELL US YOUR
NEEDS…….PLEASE
For the fifth year SCL has run its customer
satisfaction survey, but this year there are more
than twice as many travel money respondents
that before.
This is also the first year that FX and Prepaid
results have been combined, with 66% of
respondents from the travel money clients and
34% from prepaid only customers.
As is all the previous years, levels of happiness
with UltraPoS are quite astonishing. Here are the
main findings:
Usability:
99% profess to have a thorough knowledge of the system
88% say it has all the functions they need
87% agree to helps to achieve expected levels of customer service
97% have no reliability issues
Perhaps the most satisfying of all is that 98% of regular UltraPoS users would recommend
it………………. And they do!

NO ROOM FOR COMPLACENCY
One of the most significant recent additions by SCL
is the new iOS (Apple) App for the instant issuance
of prepaid cards.
Especially in the USA the opportunity to perform
“queue busting”, totally mobile card issuance and
added sales in the car park or immediate vicinity,
is already proving enormously popular.
By simply plugging in an ID Tech card swiper into
the headphone socket of a tablet or smartphone
and loading the UltraPoS App, a mall owner has
all they need for prepaid card instant issuance.
There are no worries about security, as built in
encryption ensures that no card data is ever
exposed.
A consumer’s card is simply swiped through the ID
Tech reader and the UltraPoS App does the rest
for instant issuance of a new prepaid card. A
receipt is emailed to the customer to confirm the
transaction. Currently the App is for swipe and
signature for the USA only, but Chip and PIN will
be developed if there’s sufficient demand.
“With the new IoS version of UltraPoS we have
responded to our customers’ changing needs,
enabling them to take the point-of-sale to where
the demand is, rather than relying on consumers
to come to them” explains Patrick Roe, Sales and
Marketing Director, SCL.

FIRST MOVE TO MOBILE TRANSACTIONS
BLACKHAWK INTEGRATION IS HOLIDAY
SEASON WINNER FOR MACERICH Macerich is a large retail property owner in the USA who began using UltraPoS in 2008 for Open Loop
cards only.
In 2012 the US holiday season saw $43bn worth of prepaid gift cards change hands, but despite this
figure many retailers are experiencing a decline in
sales due to the ever increasing number of
competing products hitting the market.
To combat this Macerich reviewed its program early
last year, choosing to replace its program manager
and form a direct relationship wit SCL. Blackhawk
Network , which has a portfolio of over 500 open
and closed loop gift card choices was selected.
The resulting new product range was launched ahead of the 2013 USA holiday season and provided a
marked up-swing in sales performance. Shoppers could choose from six VISA branded open loop cards
and over 60 closed loop cards including: iTunes, GAP, TGI Friday, Home Depot, Barnes & Noble and
AMC Theatres.
Watch out for further developments with Blackhawk later this year.

The International Reference Systems (IRS) global
currency database is one of the most useful and
popular interfaces within UltraPoS. It allows the
checking and authentication of any bank note in
the world. It includes all the latest special
watermarks and security features incorporated in
the bank notes, to ensure that retail and FX store
assistants can do everything possible to not accept
counterfeit currency.
Now, UltraPoS users have the option to also access
the IRS ID database and it is just as sophisticated
and impressive.
It is a comprehensive global reference for
Passports and ID documents, which is essential as
KYC requirements become increasingly necessary.
The most common forms of fraudulent ID are:
stolen documents, changed documents, a
complete forgery, and a ‘fantasy’ document from
an invented country, or a ‘look-a-like’ photograph
on an altered ID document.
Joost Vlek, CEO, IRS explains: “It is surprisingly
easy to present yourself as someone else, using
fictitious ID. As a test, I have used a Passport in the
name of US President George Bush & I could
obtain currency from banks and FX bureaux, as
well as use on-line sites to potentially purchase
goods.”
The IRS ID database has all the information you
could ever need about all the authorised and
official ID documents in the world, with clear
descriptions of the individual security and ‘special’
features built into the documents.
Take a look…………. it is amazing and irresistible for
anyone who is public facing at the PoS.
DON’T GET CAUGHT BY A FALSE ID
TRENDING FOR PROFIT No one can afford to stand sill in business, so Eddie Sawyer’s look to the near future, was a very popular
presentation at the conference. SCL has an enviable track record of working closely with customers to
ensure the latest developments are available through UltraPoS, whenever possible.
Eddie identified the following as must watch areas:
New tender types such as Bitcoin
The implications of new Apps and electronic wallets
The growing need for access to your services from mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones
Existing customer loyalty schemes, maybe using QR codes or eVouchers
The latest technology for consumer offers,
special bargains or limited discount ‘sales’
periods

COMING NEXT IN 2014 UltraPoS v2.5 is on its way soon and it’s packed full of up-dates and new features, such as:
Multi currency prepaid cards which were introduced in 2010 by both VISA and MasterCard, but
have been slow to take off in the UK. In fact Australia has led the way with multi purses on the
same account, but the UK is catching up quickly. It’s quite a substantial change to UltraPoS
functionality, but initially PrePay Solutions cards will be incorporated into v2.5, with Access
Prepaid’s Cash Passport likely to follow.
Browser support changes will include eliminating the need for compatibility mode in the IE and
add support for other popular browsers.
Increased demand for ordering sites and on-line sales with home delivery has led to changes to
customer maintenance in the UI. Users will be able to manage the currency & denomination
availability, by allocating permission to a particular user type.
We will keep you informed as v2.5 draws nearer.
DON’T MISS CONFERENCE 2015 Hopefully this taster from 2014 has wet your appetite for more details from the ‘Responding to
Change’ conference.
We wish to thank our partner supporters: International Reference Systems (IRS), MoneyGram and Cash
Management Systems (CMS) for their valuable involvement.
