The normal area under sugarcane in this region is

54,974 ha

about 25% of total cane area in the state. presently

50,000 ha primarily in Medak and adjoining

districts like Nizamabad and Khammam

The varieties popularly grown in this region are

INTERNODE BORER

• From internode formation

till harvest

• Larvae bore into the

internodes and the frass

is pushed out to the

exterior

• Damaged internodes get

hardened and crushing

becomes difficult

Presence of dead heart

formed of leaf spindle

and top two leaves.

Dead heart can be

pulled out with a little

force.

Presence of one or two

holes in the top portion

of stem.

Internode borer

Cane stage

Damage restricted to a particular internode,

preferably third to fifth form the top.

Damaged internodes show small borer hole

extending either side making semi-circle.

Fresh, deep yellowish granular frass oozing

out through borer holes.

Severe infestation of Early shoot borer

Larvae of ESB

The crop was planted in winter season

with spacing of 1.20 meter distance among rows.

The plot size of each experimental unit was 4.8 x 5

meter comprising four rows.

Two central rows were selected from each plot for

recording observations on borer infestation percentage

on dead-heart basis. Healthy and infested tillers of

central two rows were counted separately during August

and borer infestation percentage on dead-hearts basis

caused by ESB and internode borers was calculated

For recording borer infestation percentage on internode damage

basis, ten canes were randomly collected from each unit at

harvesting time and canes were splitted longitudinally and closely

examined.

Number of total internodes and infested internodes were counted

separately from each cane and borer infestation percentage on

internode damage basis was calculated

Sugarcane genotypes were categorized in different degree of

resistance/susceptibility according to resistance scale described

by Jena et al. (7).
