DESCRIPTION

Before the public consultation was complete for SD68 rollout of PLC (Professional Learning Communities), the district spent $36k of taxpayer money to send 19 delegates to Phoenix for a 3-day PLC conference and sent home notices to parents, as if PLC were a "done deal".Business as usual at SD68.What are PLC's? And how does this affect me?This document shows the correspondence about the cost of the convention and the notice SD68 has put out about PLCs and how they affect you.Bottom Line: Your child will be receiving one hour less instruction, every Monday, starting September 2014. Early days now on Monday AND Friday for most schools in the District. (Certainly those in Cedar).

    Subject:PLC conference in PheonixMs. Neary

I have heard SD68 is sending a delegation to the PLC conference in Phoenix. During this time of

fiscal restraint, a time when money is difficult to come by.

A time when we have been told by some that they would love to provide busing to Ladysmith

as well as John Barsby, however it is too expensive, even though, the majority of students fromCedar have chosen LSS.

A time when you are about to run into serious overruns in your conversion of CCSS into Cedar

Elementary. A School that is 107% capacity and the newest in the district that will become

another half full, underutilized space when you have a perfectly good school in Woodbank

Elementary, just up the road, that you could convert at a fraction of the cost.

A time when you are spending money to defend a lawsuit when all you had to do is step back

and have an open consultation and include your stakeholders.

A time when you have been told by the provincial government that there is no money for a new

    school.

At time when we have been told, the bell has wrung and to suck it up children, and we

need to pass this before the silly election season by those whom we have elected.

A time when we have been told that the number 1.9 million that you float around as the cost of

converting CCSS into Cedar Elementary was made up.

A time when all the sacrifices in SD68 are all coming from the south end, where for the record,

    none of you live.

A time when you tell us we are being disrespectful to you???

Isnt this just another example of extremely poor decisions by you and your group? Does this

look like the plan you put together when you started this whole mess?

I would like to know how big your delegation is? Who is going, and what is the final cost?

I look forward to your reply

    Mr. S. Rae

    VIA EMAIL

    Dear Mr. Rae:

Your email regarding a PLC conference in Phoenix, Arizona, has been received andreviewed by the Board of Education and I am responding on the behalf of the Board.

A delegation from SD68 attended a Professional Learning Communities conference inPhoenix at the end of February. This professional development reflects the Board`s interestin advancing the PLC model system-wide as part of the focus on the improvement ofstudent learning.

Nineteen delegates attended this event and the cost for each participant for travel, accommodations, and registration was approximately $1900, per person. Most of thedelegates used their own professional development fund entitlements to pay for the trip. Sixmembers of the PLC Implementation team were invited and funded courtesy of the LearningServices Department. The school principals attending the conference who were funded bythe Learning Services Department have made a commitment to be part of a team involvedin implementing professional learning communities in our district over the next three years.

In order to meet the Boards goal of improving student learning district-wide, our educatorsare engaging in a number of exciting new initiatives, one of which is the PLC model.

    Yours truly,

    Dot Neary, Board Chair
